Hi. I'm looking for a place in Hanoi where I can hire some sporting equipment for an afternoon activity with my school. I'm thinking of basketballs, volleyballs etc. Does anybody know of a place? Thanks
Here's a thought. 20.10.2010 is coming up this year (10.20.2010 doesn't exist) and I'm wondering if in Asian Numerology etc. this date has any special meaning? To date, its been posited as International Statistics Day - which is interesting because what statistics reveal, like a bikini, is suggestive, but what they conceal is vital; however, I'd like to know if this date is considered lucky, unlucky, and what, if anything, people plan to do on this day. Does this day mean anything to you? D...
Is Finnegans a good spot to watch the rugby game tonight (Ireland V Wales) ? Does it get crazy full ? Any other places showing tonight's game ?
Hi folks, some forward planning being done here. We want to arrange a space and large screen presentation of this match to be played in June. At the moment we're still spitballing the idea, location, food, beer, numbers, etc. so I'd like to see if anyone is interested in attending and if you have any ideas or suggestions to contribute.
Does any one know where i can get dog repellant ,as i am sick of doggy dungs on my front porch....
Esl teachers of Hanoi. Have your say! Whats your experience of the reality of esl teaching? Personally I did it for six months and that was more than enough for me. Badly paid, poor working conditions and a shambolic indifferent management style. I experienced high stress levels and also a lingering sense of guilt that the locals were paying through the nose for a standard of service which I simply did not have the necessary skills or experience to provide. Overall I'd say with a few except...
Hey, I am scouring Hanoi for shepherd pie, either in a restaurant/bakery/deli thing or the frozen one in a supermarket but have no luck. Does anyone know where I can find them? Help much appreciated.
I went to a trusted travel agent in Hoan Kiem District. Me and my friends have been using their services and have been quite satisfied. Anyhoo, I went there yesterday and asked for a visa extension, 3 months multiple entry. She gave me a price of $400USD ??? Seems way too overpriced. I entered the country visa free since I am from an ASEAN member. This is the same reason she gave me, that technically I have no visa thus the price. Is she pulling my leg? 0_o
I am travelling on my own and arrive in Hanoi on the 5/4, I join a tour on the 8th. As I am not a very experienced traveller I thought a local person as a guide might be the best way to see the city. Either an English speaking local or maybe a bored New Hanoian. Any suggestions?
My apologies to alpha if this question has already come up, but I can't find anything at all on the topic. What summer camps for kids are there in Hanoi? I know about a few: Hanoi International Kindergarten offers a 7 week program for 15 months up to 8 years, Rainbow Pre-school offers the same length of weeks for up to 7 years, Hanoi International School said they don't have a camp in a telephone inquiry but I know that some of their teachers have organized a 3 week camp in past years - s...
I am arranging a 50th birthday bash and need a good and crazy cover band...any siggestions?
I have a question. How do you say "Can you please not make me look like a fucking idiot" in Vietnamese? I just got without a doubt the worst haircut of my life at Link Q on Kim Ma today. I now bear a striking resemblance to "Sloth" from the goonies(see pic). I'm not kidding-he absolutely butchered me. I tried to communicate/gesticulate that I wanted a short back and sides as best I could and he proceeded to shave the back and sides of my head bald and leave a ridiculous tuft of hair on top. O...
At the risk of starting a huge debate, I'm wondering what other New Hanoians think of the use of tramcars in the Old Quarter? An article in today's Vietnam News says that the first 8-12 seat tramcars will be in use in the Old Quarter and Hoan Kiem from next month. They will be used for guided tours. I must say I was appalled when I first read the article. I think the use of cars in the Old Quarter should be banned, so introducing more vehicles does not make sense to me. I know the counter arg...
It strikes me that our world is falling into two divisions – those with access to immense power of the internet and those that do not. Can it be that without the ability to instantly access the terabytes of information that these people are somehow “undermenchen” , lesser mortals? Consider the internet, “Google”, “Wakipedia”, ”Bing”, et al – is this the sum total and final arbitrator of all intellectual knowledge? Ipso facto, if you cannot “google it”, it does not exist? Is this not the heig...
We've all been there. You're driving along Phu Doan with the hospital on your right, the light goes red, you pull to a stop, look to your right and see....utter carnage!!! I'm referring to what must be one of the most unique and surreal(not to mention unpleasant) sights I have yet seen on my travels-a billboard containing numerous colour photographs of various parts of the human body in the immediate aftermath of serious road accidents. A catalogue of horrors far worse than the most graphic...
When does business REALLY resume again in Viet Nam in this post-Tet period? For example, my company needs to place some Help Wanted ads on VietNamWorks and NewHanoian but it is obvious there is hardly any traffic on those sites at the moment (23 February). So, "Old" Hanoians ... when does business in this country really zip back into full gear?
If I sign a contract with a reputable school, pay taxes, and am eligible for a work permit (BA, CELTA), does that mean that I don't have to leave the country for the duration of my contract? I'm not clear on whether a work permit itself guarantees permission to be in the country. In any event, doesn't a work permit take 6 months to get? Would my school be able to get a 6 month visa if I'm legitimately working?
Today Family Tempest is, "... off to see the Lizard..." Where are you off this Tet? TT p.s. safe travels and have a great time during Tet.
so... been needing to join a gym but the cost of all the expat ones is vaguely disgusting (considering they seem to have about half a treadmill and three weights!). been told the local gyms are pretty much the same but half the cost. BUT then got told 'women don't go to them.' Is that women aren't allowed? Or women would rather do aerobics on street corners and just don't really go to gyms? Or I'd go and be massively offending everyone but they'd be too polite to do anything more than ...
I am wanting to invest in a new camera. I do not want to go the SLR route and i am kind of over the point and shoot on auto function, however I do want to be able to manually set my camera for photos/underwater photos. I do a fair amount of diving and am loving the underwater photography as well. I think that I am leaning towards Canon maybe the g11 or S9. Any other suggestions would be great. If anyone has some good info about the cameras and places to buy in Hanoi, that would be great. An...
