I was watching KBS WORLD on cable between 11.30pm – 12.30am a few nights ago. Though I didn’t understand a word of Korean, but what captured my attention was the preparation of Korean traditional food using various seafood and shell fish.
There was kimchi made with mixing freshly slice stone fish, sliced garlic and chili, some already kimchi-ed spinach (I guess) and some paste which I really can’t tell what that it by looking at it. There is a story about how this kimchi came about. It is when a fisherman found that the kimchi that he brought along for lunch had gone bad under the hot sun, however he was unwilling to through it away. What he did was making it eatable by adding sliced fresh fish, more garlic….
Shortly before that, they were introducing something really interesting. I don’t know if it’s a shell fish or just some sea algae. If I’m not wrong (you tell me if I’m wrong), it is called BONG GHE (or Pong Gay??). And this is what I really want to know what a BONG GHE is?
From what I see, Bong Ghe is something looks like a mutated red tomato that has fat little orangy-red fingers sticking out.
The hostess of this segment of the story visited a fishing village and the camera opened with a scene that looks like a fishing dock where there are a few Korean lady plucking the Bong Ghe off a rope, and on the other side of the dock there was a man with a machine that is used to shake the Bong Ghe off the rope in a much faster manner, guess that’s the new way of removing it from the rope. And next scene was showing the hostess hopping into the boat where the fisherman pulls up a rope from the sea which has got lots of Bong Ghe growing on it. He simply plucks one from the rope, cut off the fat little finger, halve it and scrape the flesh off the skin and the hostess just pop it into her mouth. And of course they also made dishes by mixing the Bong Ghe with chili paste, sesame seeds, crushed garlic and fresh chili.
Now, the question again….do you know what I’m talking about? What Bong Ghe is actually?
