Greetings New Hanoians! We want to thank everybody who made it out to the March Meet Up at Bar 38. It was a rocking success that threatened to overwhelm the modest space of our ever-accommodating hosts. The drinks were flowing, faces new and old were doing what New Hanoians do, and everybody helped to make the event all we could ask for. We'll be coming at you in the next newsletter with a heads up about who is sponsoring the April get-together. Keep an eye out for it. Since the Bar 38 meet up, we've also seen a great bust of reviewing activity on the site. Your contributions have helped us blow right by the 1,300 review mark. At this rate, we'll be talking 2,000 in no time at all. That's quite an accomplishment for this community. You should all be very proud of adding to such a collective knowledge base. I know we're immensely impressed with the work you've done, and when we're impressed, you win things. Here's what's up for grabs this month... Our first available prize comes compliments of one of Hanoi's new movers on the Old Quarter restaurant scene. Just down the street from St. Joseph's Cathedral on Ly Quoc Su street, the warm glow of Festa will be welcoming one of our distinguished reviewers and three friends. And what will be waiting for them? Nothing less than a rooftop terrace BBQ complete with a bottle of wine. Five floors above one of Hanoi's oldest commercial streets, our winner and some lucky friends will get a shot at the sort of Festa experience that is quickly becoming a much talked about part of an evening on the town. While there are also several floors of inside dining space, nothing quite compares to dining in the open air with an evening's Old Quarter soundtrack filtering up from below. If you notice that one of your friends is in the hunt for a prize like this, I'd be giving them a bit of a nudge. Three or four more reviews could be the difference between, "Maybe next month" and some free BBQ in the coming weeks. Next up, we turn our attention to the midday meal. We all have our lunch time favorites, but we occasionally need reminding that there are often outstanding options just around the corner we've been neglecting. Kiti Restaurant is ready to put itself into the mix. Anyone working in or around Hoan Kiem district might find the set lunches of this finely crafted little eatery just to their taste. One of our award winning users and will get a chance to take out a whole slew of office mates to see what it's all about. Kiti owner Kien, a restaurateur with years of experience in both Europe and Vietnam, will be setting up a party of eight happy Hanoians with the sort of lunch time goodness that they have on hand daily. Be a contributor of note this month, and the whole office will know. You'll be setting them up with a choice from Kiti's fine Vietnamese lunch selections. Last, but certainly not least, we'll be sending one lucky New Hanoian and five of his or her even luckier friends high above the city to take in the spectacular views of Noc Bar - La Scala. Located just off of West Lake at the end of Hoang Hoa Tham street, this 19th floor bar and restaurant is challenging all the heavy hitters for the title of "Best City View". They won't just be there for eye candy, though. From their lofty perch, they'll be getting the best that Noc Bar - La Scala's patio grill has to offer in the form of dinner for six. To wash it down, the table will be enjoying a pair of cocktail pitchers...on the house. Dinner and drinks in the sky. If our winner plans it right and heads out there on one of Noc Bar - La Scala's renowned Friday nights, they may also witness (or join in?) the ever-growing masses that regularly attend their salsa night. With more than 100 dance enthusiasts out to shake a tail feather, they may be staying for more than even this generous prize offers up. And there you have it. If you needed any other motivation to contribute to this dynamic New Hanoian community, I doubt you'll find better. And speaking of contributions to dynamic communities, we want to thank all those New Hanoians who have spent some of their Vietnam time in Saigon and have taken a few moments to be some of the earliest contributors to the newly launched So Saigon website. The New Hanoian's southern comrade is well on its way to establishing itself as the community site of record in the bustling metropolis of HCMC. If you or any of your mates have spent some time in the south and have valuable insights to share on your time there, don't be shy about visiting So Saigon and letting our southern neighbors benefit from what you know. There's no need to sign up for a new account, as your New Hanoian membership is all it takes. Simply use the city switcher that you see in the header of any page. Finally, we've got some big news for the first week of April. If you haven't heard yet, one of the biggest (if not THE biggest) international music events of recent years will be hitting the American Club on April 5th. In honor of the Minsk Club's 10th year anniversary, the American Club will be playing host to an all day, outdoor international music festival with bands and DJs from six countries. Acts include: Both Cheese, a funky indie-rock band from Tokyo, Japan, Peabody, an alternative rock act from Sydney Australia, a rocking singer-songwriter James Harries from the UK as well as the experimental pop duo from Bangkok, Stylish Nonsense, who Hanoians will remember from the CAMA party last summer. There will also be local expat and Vietnamese rock bands storming the stage as well as a roving H’mong music group bringing a touch of northern Vietnam to proceedings. DJs from the UK, Australia and Japan will also be flying in and the CAMA Sound-System will be playing suitably cool tunes all day long in the chill out tent where guests can kick back with cocktails. The Ho Chi Minh City-based Jetlag posse with their main amigo DJ Jase will also be providing quality visuals and tunes. All day long there will be a festival atmosphere with entertainment for kids and stalls serving Japanese, Indian and western grub provided by Ren, Tandoor, and Al Fresco’s restaurants respectively as well as authentic Vietnamese street food. Seriously people, you won't forgive yourself for missing an event like that. We expect to see all of you there. Yes, ALL OF YOU. Cheers, The Staff of the New Hanoian
