I totally agree with the first review. However, I give Highlands three stars due to averaging...5 stars for food and 1 star for service. I usually go to the one overlooking Hoan Kiem. If you sit outside the staff completely ignore you. Most of the time I have to get my own menu and go find someone to take my order. However, the food has always been great. It's nice to have a real latte. However, for the price of the menu items, service should be as good as the food.

Nice atmosphere and a great menu. Diva serves up a great mix of items between its Western menu and Vietnamese menu. To have such a variety of great soups and salads is a nice change from the usual heavier options at many restaurants. Everyone enjoyed their meals. The prices are quite good, considering the food quality. Portion sizes are perfect in my opinion. They also have a nice drink menu. The house wine is pretty good and it's 60,000 VDN for a glass or red or white. My only suggestion is that the servers be a little more attentive.

This place is fantastic. We come here weekly. The menu is in Vietnamese, but there are cartoon pictures to show the categories i.e. pig, snake, cow, chicken, vegetable, etc. I haven't tried many things off the menu, but the Lau Bo is amazing. The fried rice with vegetables and tofu is good as well. We always ask for nem (spring rolls) but they never have them. The beer comes small or large...the large is in a giant glass stein. The staff are so good to us. We always have at least 3 people giving us their attention. Our first time there we were allowed to go into the kitchen to point at what we wanted. It's quite entertaining, as there is usually a kareoke party or a wedding at the other end of the outdoor area. The best part about Pacific is that it's set back off of the street and surrounded by trees, so it's an escape from the traffic and noise, that is typical of a bia hoi.

My first and only experience here was horrifying. I had a banana smoothie, which was delicious and I also bought a baguette to take home with me. When i arrived home, I broke off a piece to eat and hundereds of tiny ants fell onto me an were crawling throughout it...the baguette was harvesting an ant colony inside the baguette. No sign of insects on the outside. I know ants are a common problem through kitchens, but I think it's completely unacceptable to be selling infested bread from an "upscale" bakery.
As an update....
After posting my complaint, the consultant Ramon, contacted me and invited me for a return visit to Cafe Smile, on him. I went for lunch and enjoyed the experience. Since the first incident, they have made some changes to ensure it doesn't occur again. The food and service was great. I'm really amazed by the training and organization of the education program at Hoa School

Hi! I will be working in Dong Da when I come to Hanoi in September. I was wondering if this a good area to live in or if I should live in another area and bike to work? Any recommendations?
Hi! I was wondering if anyone can suggest a gym to join. I know a lot of them are really expensive, but if there is one that is a decent balance between price and facilities?
Thanks in advance
Last time, this question didn't post, so I will try again...Does anyone know where (if) I can buy an exercise ball? I am looking for one of the big ones used for ab work, physio, pilates, etc. Thanks in advance!
Hey all,
Does anyone know of stores that sell trendy/stylish shoes in Hanoi in ladies size 10 (us) or 40 (eu). I've searched the Q&As and saw that Euro shoes was suggested. I went there and their selection isn't exactly trendy. Something in line with Nine West (which also only carries Vietnamese sizes).
Thanks in advance!

Hmmm, I would say an area that is close to some good restaurants, bars and a gym or yoga studio. I don't like really "touristy" places...from the sounds of it, Dong Da isn't great for walking? I like walking! hehe.

if you have a shoes size over 8 (38 EU) then bring shoes from home. only up to C for bras too. also, if you're particular about lotions, bring a good supply as well. it's really hard to find good moisturizer here that isn't whitening and isn't 40$. bring a good pair of slippers too, as tile floors are really cold (if you are renting a house).
i underestimated how cold it would feel here. at night on a motorbike i need to wear a scarf and a warm jacket, so if you don't want to invest in new cold weather clothes, bring them from home (as they can be a bigger investment).

To add to the above, the best way to prevent infection is by cooking meat to the correct temperature (160 degrees for pork). However, if you're like most expats, you don't cook for yourself very often, which makes it difficult to monitor food preparation. If you're worried, stick to eating in decent restaurants and avoid pork on the streets.
