Hi, there are quite a number of Chinese restaurants serving tim sum in Hanoi. You can try Fortuna @ USD9 +++ (available on weekends and usually quite crowded but good value for $); Hanoi Hotel @ USD8 +++ (food is good but variety is limited); Daewoo Hotel @ USD 13 +++ (didn't really enjoy the food there though the variety is more); Sofitel Plaze @ USD 12+++ (food was good but def no push carts!), Nikko Hotel @ USD 10 +++ on weekdays and USD 11 +++ on weekends (going to try soon so no comments yet) and Long Vien, a restaurant further down from Fortuna (no buffet but food is reasonable and relatively cheaper). As you can tell by now, I am v much a tim sum fan myself. :) Enjoy and let me know if you find other good eateries serving tim sum in Hanoi.
In response to the question: Does anywhere know of a decent Chinese place for yum cha aka dim sum??? I am craving a hit from the trolleys!...

Hi, if you are looking at a direct flight from Hanoi to Hong Kong, the only possibility is Vietnam Airlines which charges exhorbitant rates. If you are looking at lower fares, I would advise you to fly to Singapore, KL or Bangkok and transit from there. Some airlines that you can look at are Air Asia, Singapore Airlines and Malaysia Airlines. My two cents worth. :)
In response to the question: Does anybody know where to get the cheapest return air ticket to Hong Kong? I have searched high and low on the net and they are all in the vicinit...

Some of the hotels here offer good gym facilities, like Sheraton, Sofitel Plaza and Daewoo. Another option you might want to consider is Hanoi Club. If you are open, you can sign up as a member with the public gym. There is one along Xuan Dieu that charges around VND 50,000 for a month. The gym equipment are not that new though. :)

Would recommend the Van Mieu (Temple of Literature), Army Museum and History Museum as well. The only downside is that the museums are not air-conditioned so going there in summer is quite unbearable, at least for myself. Nevertheless, enjoy! :)

Strongly recommend the local cable instead of the Filipino satellite. It nearly drove us crazy because you need to constantly change the TV card and sometimes, we are told that there is no supply which left us "TV-less" for a few days! Now, we are using both the cable and satellite so it's much better. For cable, there is a once-off subscription of about VND 300,000 followed by monthly subscription of VND 50,000.
In response to the question: Hi Again What, if any, English Language TV stations are available in Vietnam (Satellite or others) and what kind of programmes, series' etc do they...

Welcome to Hanoi. If you are here for shopping, the Old Quarters is a must-see. You can get nice shirts at Hang Dao, silk stuff at Hang Gai, Nha Tho, etc. For sightseeing, you can visit some of the famous lakes here like Hoan Kiem Lake (located at the city centre) and West Lake. There are a few pagodas where you can take pictures. For museum visits, you can pop by the History Museum, Temple of Literature and Museum of Ethnology.
Outside Hanoi, I would recommend a visit to either Tam Coc (limestone caves in the paddy fields) or Halong Bay (a UNESCO Heritage Site). You can easily arrange a tour with any local tour operator.

Just to add on, the instructor at Hanoi Club is v professional and patient. My husband and I have been taking lessons with him since last year and we faced a lot of disruptions in our training schedule due to our frequent travel. But Michael, the instructor, always tried to accommodate us. And he does not just focus on the number of lessons, instead he wants to ensure that we both can swing properly as beginners. So I think the price that we paid was worth it. :)

The weather is actually quite nice so you don't have to worry. It's not as bitter as I thought when I first came. Also, most of the air-conditioners here function as heaters and dehumidifiers as the same time so it's "all-in-one". If you stay in a reputable serviced apartment, all these would be taken care of. :)

You can get the frozen berries from Metro. There's a small selection under the frozen section. Strawberries are in season now so you can get them at VND 40,000 per kilo at most markets, like Che Hom or Che 19-12. They taste really yummy!
