Let me begin by saying I think the doctors here are excellent, but having been to this clinic at least 5 times, I must say it's way too expensive for most people. Once I came in with food poisoning and quite dehydrated. They charged me over 700 dollars for an IV and a 2 hour lie down in their emergency section. That wiped me out for months. Incidentally, after paying the 700 bucks, the next day I was still so unwell, I needed to go for more IV time, so I tried Hong Ngoc hospital -- exactly the same process and IV bag -- labelled EXACTLY the same. Price, 100,000 dong. You do the math.

Love this place! Stayed here for a couple of weeks when I first arrive in Hanoi last year. Great service, rooms, and amenities for really reasonable rates and no under-handed gimmicks. Have had visiting friends and parents stay here since then and it's never failed to give everyone a positive impression of my life here in Hanoi (even my very strict auntie, who made friends with everyone there). I still use them to book trips and tickets too. If you've got visitors who can't afford the Sheraton but don't want a backpacker dive, this is the place to choose!

It's hit or miss. Yes, when I want to buy something ready-made, this is the place I go, along with a mad search of the Made in Vietnam shops and a quick visit to the ToS sister store, Contraband. Prices are far too high, but the larger western woman will have desperate days when they'll pay 50 bucks for a shirt they wouldn't even glance at twice back home -- all because it fits. And in all fairness a few pieces have become favs in my limited wardrobe here and the staff are very friendly and helpful. Not my dream store, but has helped me through a few fashion nightmares.

good buddy (not me - really!) is trying to quit smoking and I am fully behind him. But he's pretty much unbearable without his daily fix and the rest of us have started wearing our mu bao hiem whenever he's around the house. So that my head can enjoy the fall air (plus my friend will be welcome at social events again), does anyone know if nicotine patches or other smoking cessation aids are available? I could order from back home, but that might take a month and frankly I might be minus a friend by then. Thanks a lot for any and all assistance!
Too bad there's no section for dumbass questions, otherwise I'd gladly tag this as such.
I have never been to the Big C or Metro (insert appalled expat gasp here) and just wanted to know about how much a taxi would be to either venue from, say, Ho Hoan kiem? I'd probably xe om it, but with the so-so weather, I might live large this week and grab a cab.
My recent exchange with Queen Pippa on dumbassness just gave me a thought, although usually I refrain from actually acting on such impulses.
I was wondering if researchers here in Hanoi would be interested in forming an ad hoc group for info and support?
To my thinking, such a group could connect people with others working in the same field. At the very least it could be a database of emails and resources, but could possibly have a somewhat social component to offer specialized advice, feedback for ongoing projects (code for "who wants to read my latest dissertation chapter and rip me a new one?"), or even just moan over a coffee/beer/trung vit lon about red tape, grant rejections, or bad wifi connections.
Those on VSG know that's the best place for info, but I thought we might benefit from something more local and more comprehensive. Personally, I'd love to have access to a list of folks who are here, working in a similar field, and would be up for sharing sources and even providing feedback. Such a list could keep up with when folks are coming and going and also up-to-the-minute info on archives, exhibitions, addy/phone/emails of local institutes and programs, etc.
Oh, and by the way, I have no idea how to organize this. I'm just the idea-chick. Thoughts?

Just wanted to say thanks for all the answers. We went to Trang Thi this morning and found the patches - although I was surprised they are about 5 bucks each (I'm told it's not much less back home without a coupon). If that doesn't work, bethany, I'll be in touch about Tran Huong - many thanks again!

might just be me, but a few weeks ago I had my eyebrows waxed at QT by HK and I left with enormous black eyes. the lady was so rough with me that the entire upper portion of my eyelid was purple for about four or five days and various colors after that. first time it's ever happened, so i'm back to work with my trusty tweezers.
In response to the question: Does anyone know of a place in the city that does eyebrow threading?...

Our landlords' have 3 altars still in the home and they come at the first and middle of each lunar month to bring fruit/burn incense/pray in the evening after we get home from work.
At first I was really surprised. They do act like the house is theirs while they are here (grabbing dishes, using the kitchen, and going from room to room to set up their materials). Also the incense from 3 different rooms at the same time tends to overpower a bit. Still, they are friendly and polite and usually stay only an hour and a half or so. And they've allowed us to make a lot of changes to the house (screens for mosquito protection, couple of new windows, new paint, moved air conditioners, etc.), so all in all I think we are lucky to have good landlords (esp after reading some horror stories here) and I'm fine with their visits.
Your situation seems much more tricky and I do know of another case like this -- the person asked a Vietnamese friend to lend a hand. The friend was there when the landlord came in, she excused herself for a period of time to run to the market, and meanwhile the friend brought up the topic of how Tay people like their privacy, etc. It worked, so maybe you can give it a go. Wish I could be more helpful - good luck!
In response to the question: How do I go about telling my landlord that I don't want him in my house for four hours every Saturday? He uses the excuse of needing to water the p...

Speaking of which, what happened to the great office supply store on the corner of Ngo Quyen and Ly Thuong Kiet? It was a large store, felt almost like small version of a Staples or Office Max in the US. Would love to know where they are now or if there's another non-stand out on the street and play psychic to guess what they have in stock place.

which is why I've yet to make a trek out there. trouble is, half the folks on here answer questions with "go to Big C or Metro" and I figured I was missing out. Plus I was planning on scamming the pickpockets with a fake wallet in my bag's outer pocket with nothing inside but a note with a smiley face. That could be worth a 45 minute ride.
Hmm starting to suspect I have way too much time on my hands.
