I've not been with ANZ Vietnam for very long, so for now this review pertains mainly to opening an account.
Like the first reviewer I also have a Smart Account, but mine is in VND. All I needed was my passport and visa, application form and 500,000VND. To deposit cash you do need supporting documentation such as your labour contract, but I don't think that's unique to ANZ. The fees seem reasonable and it's free to open an account and withdraw from ANZ ATMs (up to 9,000,000VND per day).
I was surprised at how easy, fast and yes, pleasant (!) it was dealing with the bank and I would definitely recommend them.

Went to a fantastic topical exhibition here today. The one I actually went to see, on the trafficking of women, was already taken down by the time I rocked up. That didn't impress me much, but it gave me the opportunity to view Ganh Hang Rong (Street Vendors), a photographic exhibition with interviews about the effect of the recent decree prohibiting ganh hang rong on certain streets.
This quality exhibition is compassionate and engaging, revealing the controversy of the issue and questioning government inaction on rural poverty.
I have always considered ganh hang rong an organic part of Hanoi and had not really thought about who the vendors are, where they're from or why they do it. After seeing this exhibition I will never look at them the same way.
The four stars is mainly for the temporary exhibitions. The first floor has permanent material largely relating to women's roles in the wars of resistance, which as the first reviewer indicated, is very interesting material but presented in a fairly pedestrian way.
The museum is being renovated at the moment so only the first floor (which I would call the ground floor, but what do I know) and third floor are open to visitors. Open 8 - 4.30 everyday except Mon, entry 10,000VND.

Sleek, airy cafe with natural light and a tranquil view of Truc Bac lake; an ideal place for people watching. Service is sweet and the menu offers a good range of reasonably priced coffees, toasted sandwiches, burgers, panini and cakes. Their fresh and nutritious tasting burgers linger in my mind, although they're a bit snack-sized for my hearty appetite. I'm not a big fan of the lame pop music they play but at least it's not too loud. Also for a short a*#@ like myself the counter is a bit high... and I'm not as short as some, so I'm not sure what the designer was thinking there. Overall a nice place to pass the time.

Lots of things to like about Luna d'Autunno. I've taken a star off because I would really like for the dining room to be non-smoking. It's only a smallish room so it's hard to get away from the smoke when someone decides to light up.
There is an outdoor seating area as well and both areas are ambient without being stuffy. I like being able to walk past the kitchen and see the chefs working; that's confidence inspiring. The waitstaff are attentive and courteous and the food is fantastic. The menu is really long (as is the wine list) but I'd bet everything on it is good. The ravioli with Italian sausage is a knockout! Try the lemon juice too - heavenly. Pizzas - awesome. Salads - awesome. Complimentary ciabatta - awesome.
Oh, and one more small thing. Parmesan should not be powdered in any restaurant, much less a good quality Italian one. No one likes that stuff, come on! But as everything else is so good, they're forgiven.
Looking at the reviews of more than six months ago, something must have changed.

I don't think this is very well promoted, because I only found out about it recently. But really, if you visit Hanoi and don't see a performance, you're missing out on something! If I had to choose between Tuong Theatre and the Water Puppets, I would choose Tuong. Take children, they will love the dragons! Still only 50,000 VND and still a small audience.

Hello,
Do the telephones in post offices accept incoming calls? That is, can I receive a call from China from one? Any suggestions on how to go about this?
Thanks!

Ok so it doesn't answer your question, but I also recommend Lan Salon at the Sofitel Plaza; he's a bit of a wizard. I got an appointment on the same day I called, and I needed foils, a semi-permanent colour, cut, and blow wave. The staff are all courteous and made sure I was comfortable and looked after. My hair is fine, colour-treated, hard to manage Western hair, but he wasn't phased!
Meanwhile, I am also interested to hear if anyone recommends Toni and Guy?

I'd love to be in on anything you newbies organise! I've been here a little longer but am also looking to make new friends in Ha Noi. I find the idea of going to some of these big events by myself a little intimidating, but would like to go with someone I've already met! A couple of hours chatting in a cafe over some good ca phe su'a nong would be a good start...

Yes, I can recommend the Hanh Hotel at Ngoc Ha St, Ba Dinh. It has had some bad reviews but I've stayed for a month and had no problems whatsoever. It's in a central location and is quiet and well-appointed.
In response to the question: Hi. I'll be arriving in Hanoi soon and staying for an indefinite period of time. Can anyone recommend a good long-term hotel? James ...

I'm glad someone thought of reserving space!
A table upstairs has been set aside for us for roughly 15 people, so if anyone else was thinking of coming, please do.

My advice is no. Arrange work and housing once you are here, and make sure you have enough money to last you a couple of months. Don't make the mistake of taking up offers of accommodation or work which aren't right for you. You can book a guesthouse for your arrival and stay until you get oriented; this should cost you the equivalent of paying rent. Research TNH for your options there. Rent varies a lot - it depends. You may find a decent share arrangement for around $200 - $250 a month, and in some cases, even less. Regarding qualifications, you will be better placed if you have a university degree in any discipline, and reputable schools will specify that your TESOL or CELTA should have a practical and/or classroom component, whereas others won't care. Again, it depends. It's best to talk to a lot of different people and do your research! All the best!
