I have never been so excited to see arugula in my life.
Veggy's is a great little shop selling fresh produce that is otherwise difficult to find in markets here. They have two refrigerated rooms: one filled with various greenery and fruit (including baby spinach, mixed salad, button mushrooms, blueberries, and avocados!), and the other with cured meats and CHEESE (including goat & blue). oh yes, and fresh tortillas.
sigh. < / end drool >

Over the past month I had collected a list of home hardware items that I just couldn't find: a hammer, nails, wall anchors, screws, bungee cord... this tiny store = my sweet salvation!
oh, and they also sell those vietnamese tobacco-water pipes (talk about diversified product offering).

Went for the dim sum today. They have about a dozen dim sum items on the menu, but were out of a couple.
To be honest, I would have been way pickier in Canada (or HK of course), but I was happy just for things to taste *generally* how they were supposed to. (have I lowered my standards or what)
xiu mai were semi-recognizable, and the pan-fried dumplings and fried mantou were good (hard to go wrong there). as mentioned below, there was no soup in the shanghai dumplings.
decent meal for a decent price (3 of us ate our fill for 40,000 each: 4-5 dim sum dishes + shared congee and noodles).

I just got a shiny new (yellow!) bike!
though I had never driven a motorbike before, I finally bit the bullet and went in to VIP. Andrew was great in answering my questions (first by email and then in person), showing me how bikes work, and he even went with me for a little lesson around the block... being a newbie I really appreciate how he went out of his way.
and you just cannot feel bad about renting a bike here--it's a great concept, the prices aren't exorbitant, and the contracts are flexible.
go in and check it out!

Has anyone gotten a credit card while in Vietnam, and any recommendations?

I'm also interested in this question because I haven't figured out what the difference is either, and I'm already in Hanoi. At the very least I can tell you what I've found.
While house hunting I have only seen the 5-floor-narrow-house variety, and these places are targeted towards expats... so I'm confused if these are the 'Vietnamese'-style houses--what and where are the so-called foreigner ones?
-Possibility #1: they are hideously expensive/exclusive homes and therefore in an area I haven't been looking;
-Possibility #2: it means high-rise apartment style (which I also haven't seen much of, but I've been looking mainly in the centre of town).
Anyone have a better answer?

we're over on Doi Can just east of Van Bao and our intersection seemed to be the worst on the street--on Friday night I had to wade home through water 3 feet deep, and there was a taxi floating in the middle of the street.
people still insanely tried driving through, causing tidal waves and chagrin to those walking (like me).
somewhat miraculously much of it drained away to about ankle level by Saturday evening, but it's threatening to rise again with the constant rain...
In response to the question: I am on Van Ho Ba, near Dai Co Viet and Ba Trieu, and am MUCH better off than the Le Duan side of Lenin Park. Wow, went over there today when it wasnt...
