Can anyone recommend a good interpreter with a STRONG command of English? or perhaps give some advice about how to go about finding one?
I need someone to help interpret interviews and translate documents for a research project to do with gender issues in Vietnam.
Hello there,
I had some family members send me a box of books over 3 weeks ago using US priority mail. Still no word of the package...
Anybody have an idea of how long it usually takes to receive a package? Any hassles that I need to deal with in order to receive it?
also, half the books were new from Amazon-- will I need to pay anything extra tax etc. for the books?
Thanks!
Can anyone tell me where to buy baking soda?
Someone also told me that you can use soda water as a replacement to baking soda (the powder stuff)... is this true?
Does anyone know where in Hanoi I can purchase a 23 or 24 inch LCD computer monitor (besides Apple)?
I'm looking to buy a pair of running shoes in Hanoi. Any suggestions where I can get a good pair? Anyone have any luck with the shoes for sale around Hoan Kiem?
Where can I find good old fashioned mayo (e.g. Hellmans) and not salad spread (e.g. Miracle Whip)?
I've purchased over three brands-- Kraft (which says real mayo on the label), Crown, and a Japanese brand. They are all sour tasting like Miracle whip. I'm dying for a normal sandwich with regular mayo.
- chick peas
- bulgar wheat
- tahini
- flat bread
(yes, I am craving middle eastern food!)

I moved to Tay Ho about 1 month ago and signed a year contract-- but the contract states that if we would like to leave prior to the year ending, then we would have to inform the landlord 2 months in advance of our leaving. the landlord also has the same right. Also in our contract it states that if for some reason, due to our leaving the country or if there are unforseen noises in the apartment that the landlord didn't share with us before renting, we also have the right to leave before the contracts ends. so in a way, we are not bound to the year term. also, I think you may be able to have a 6 month contract written up.
we paid a deposit and 3 months of rent in cash to start. rent is then paid every three months.
I worked with a very helpful agent here in Hanoi, recommended through a friend. Please let me know if I can provide you her info.
Hope this helps!

Thanks for all the feedback. the more i ask around about this, the more pessimistic I get... its unfortunate as i really need these books for work and i shelled out a lot of money to get them.
had someone call the international post office here for me, and just got the run around. when directed to my local post office, i was told that they know nothing about it. i called USPS in the states and they opened an investigation, and they said that it would take 23 days for the Vietnam post to respond.
so frustrating... anyway, I will keep you posted in case there is any good news!

Hi Mojo,
Do you remember where your friend began calling and who he/she finally got this answer from? There must be a place who specifically takes care of such matters and where these packages are kept.
Thanks

Hoisin sauce in pho is a southern phenomenon. Most Vietnamese restaurants in America have hoisin sauce as overseas Vietnamese are mainly southerners. It can be purchased in most supermarkets in HCMC and you can even purchase freshly made hoisin sauce in some market places there as well. Unfortunately, it is difficult to find in Hanoi although someone told me you can find it in Big C. In Vietnamese, it is called 'tuong an pho' This sauce is also used with 'goi cuon' (fresh rolls with shrimp, pork, and veges)
In response to the question: Okay, I'm used to eating Pho with Hoisin Sauce and I can't find any here. The strangest thing is that i can't remember any restaurant I've eaten at i...

Thanks for the suggestions. I finally bought a pair at the Adidas store in the mall on the south end of Hoan Kiem lake (can't remember what it's called). There were several shops there that seemed to have a decent selection.
