Gday all...
I am about 90% sold on moving to Hanoi later this year in approx September to work at a new airline that is about to start flying from Hanoi. I will be working at the airport and i will be earning a fairly good wage but am looking to save a bit of cash to take back home with m in a few years if i am able to.
My question is, where is the best area to live and approx how long would it take to travel to and from the airport? I am 26 and love a beer, nightlife, and restaurants also. My girlfriend is also keen on moving over with me. We wont need anything too flash but something comfortable and secure with at least 2 bedrooms or 1 and a study along with a kitchen, bathroom and furnishings.
Is the old quarter the place to be or pretty much anywhere in the hoan kiem district around the lake?
Any information about these or any other topics of moving to hanoi would be a great help..
Thanks in advance.
Chris.
Gday again...
Just wondering if there was anyone who worked out at the airport who could give me some advice on where people live, travelling times, etc.
Also if there are any aircraft engineers who work there, could you please contact me as i have a few questions for you also.
cheers
Gday all...
Moving to Hanoi in September/October, and just wondering about the income tax laws.
I have been told by the contract company that I will be dealing with (which is based in Ireland) that they can pay into any account in any currency and split accounts also.
My query is, upon leaving Australia I will be declaring non residency for tax purposes, so all income I earn will be exempt from Australian tax. How much tax will I have to pay in Vietnam and how do I go about this. Also would it be wise to not have all my pay (just living costs and a touch more) go into a Vietnamese bank account (which I will open) due to getting it back out of the country a bit of a problem? And are you possibly only taxed on the amount of money that is put into the VN bank account?
Any info would be appreciated.
Cheers, Chris.

Hmmm, after reading a little bit on Ciputra, i don't think that it is me. I want to come to Vietnam for a change, not stay in a rich westerners village. I understand that could be a problem with a 50min to an hour trip to the airport everyday. If thats what it takes to live where we think we want to live then i suppose i will have to deal with the travelling. Is there any areas on the border of the Hoan Kiem district that would cut off some time to the airport that would be worth considering? That way i suppose we could have he best of both worlds maybe???

Thanks wesmo...
just had a look at google earth to get my bearings and Truc Bach Lake area looks like the goods...still close to the action but cut out the crap getting to and from work. I can handle 35mins...
Just looking around there also, what is the west lake area like? Should i try and find somewhere on the eastern side being closer to Truc Bach? I suppose once i get over there i will find my feet but it is all a bit daunting at the moment if you get my drift...dont want to get into a long term lease and find out its in the wrong area...as for lease, is there usually contracts for how long or can you pretty much come and go?

My job includes transport and from what I can gather, that is someone picking me up and taking me home for work each day. So, i will most likely just end up getting a motorbike for myself to get around and that on days off and for the girly, so i will not need a car parking space as such, just somewhere for the bike.
