about the event: BLOOD BROTHERS the musical by Hanoi International Theatre Society

Yes, this is a biased review as I am the director... but there are a hell of a lot of very talented people involved in this production - singers, actors, musicians, designers... So it will be a fantastic HITS show, not to be missed! and it is all for charity.
I just got back from rehearsals and am all excited about the show and wanted everyone else in Hanoi to know!
If you came to the Kick Off Party at the Green Mango, you will have had a small taster of things to come.
Tickets will be on sale by the end of next week... but remember if you come to the Sunday show, it is a different time!!!
Come and support HITS and REACH, and have a great night of entertainment.

I used to live around the corner from here, and when I first arrived in Hanoi i found it particularly difficult to find good quality meat (and couldnt quite work out the deal at the markets)
Now that I have been here a while, and yes I can choose to get up early and fight my way to the market and bargain over the bits of meat... I still find myself preferring to call Couchon D'or and get some lovely chicken breasts delivered to my door. Yes it is lazy of me, but it also costs the same whether I buy it in the shop or get it delivered. I can buy a few, pop them in the freezer, along with some lovely chippolatas or some good British sausage, and be set for the week.
The shop itself is a small but lovely deli, with a few western treats too.... the staff are incredibly friendly and speak Vietnamese, English and French. It is true that they try to upsell a lot, sometimes pushing you towards the most expensive meat or to buy 3 slices not 2 etc.... but I never feel forced and so dont mind this.
You can pick up a full price list from the shop, and should you want - never visit again but simply call and order. They have always been very reliable.
Looking at their list now, and it may be old (July), I can see they sell various types of sausages, ham, many pates and terrines, cold cuts, dried and smoked meat, pastrami, smoked fish, offal, beef, chicken, lam, veal, duck etc... They also do jam, pasta sauce, baked beans...basically a lot of stuff. It isnt cheap cheap, but it also isnt terribly expensive either... and sometimes it is just worth it when the supermarket is out of anything decent and I got up too late and didnt want to face the market.

I was recently stumped as to what to buy my friend who has just had a baby... then discovered that Vietnam Quilts make the most gorgeous and uniquely Vietnamese baby quilts. It was the perfect present to bring back from Hanoi to my friend in the UK. And even more special to be able to tell the story behind the quilt and Vietnam Quilts enterprise. (accompanied with a really interesting DVD about their work)
The shop itself is full of luxurious and colourful quilts, really good quality and some amazing designs. But they dont just make quilts...I found myself admiring the bags too, and cute Christmas decorations, cards, table runners, and a very comfortable looking hammock.
I will definitely be coming back for more presents to send home for Christmas, and for my winter quilt!

Went here for the first time today...was excited upon reading the menu and seeing some tasty treats on offer. Was also hoping to soak up the night before.
Our waiter seemed very unsure about our order but refused to write it down, then came back to announce that my drink was "finished" (I ordered a healthy carrot, orange, pineapple and honey juice "cocktail" - no alcohol) and then proceeded to suggest a lemon cocktail complete with vodka as an alternative. Mmm not at 11am thank you! I opted for the safe option of fanta instead - no confusion then!
When the drinks finally arrived, the waiter had managed to screw up my boyfriend's drink instead!
After that the food turned up - my boyfriend's breakfast burrito was fine (although much prefer Kitchen's burrito) but my bacon, camembert and cranberry sandwich was interesting. The filling was quite nice I have to admit, although not plentiful, but the bread was rock hard. It didnt look toasted and wasnt hot, it must have been incredibly old and toasted once before in a past life. We were able to complain to our waiter by demonstrating its rock like quality - to which he just laughed. So we gave up and I ate what I could from the filling.
I did point it out to the girl who processed our bill at the bar, and to be fair she gave me a 50% discount on the sandwich in question (!) and she was very apologetic.
Its a shame as I had heard good things about Le Pub, but perhaps only as a place to drink or test your wits at the weekly quiz. However I definitely wont be going back to eat...

about the event: H.I.T.S. Kick Off Party @Green Mango by Hanoi International Theatre Society

What an amazing night it was - full of such talented people...yes yes so it was my event, but I can totally review it as all the performers were fantastic, the Green Mango did a fabulous job hosting the night and the whole night was a huge success.
Definitely worth keeping an eye out for the HITS "Blood Brothers" production in December if last night was a taster of things to come from HITS.

I'd like to take some aerobics classes and/or some kind of martial art like kickboxing just to keep fit. (I get bored just on the treadmill!) Can anyone recommend anywhere? I have seen yoga but not anything else yet. Thank you
Does anyone know of a recording studio? I need to make some short voice recordings to send via email to Ho Chi Minh. I have no clue how to do that with my own computer (not that I have one yet) but have been told to look for a cheap recording studio... any ideas?
Where can I buy sheet music? piano music? scores? music books?
Thank you
So my laundry got messed up... I know it is part of the lottery sometimes when you are away and using laundries. (I wish I had a machine or had done it by hand) Anyway most of it is pink or has a few weird almost bleach like stains. Am a bit gutted about some of it, my favourite top for example and all my boyfriend's work shirts!!...but anyway..
My questions are..
1. should i go back and try to get some money for it, given that I speak very little Vietnamese. (my boyf picked them up and refused to pay but no more than that - he didnt realise the full extent of the damage till he got home)
2. Does anyone know a stain remover from the supermarket that removes dye stains?
And by the way, the offending article was actually someone else's red tshirt!!! not even ours!!! damn!!
Thank you for any help or advice!!
Does anyone know where I can rent a studio/space reasonably cheaply? needs to be fairly big, like a dance studio or aerobics studio space....just for a couple of hours at the weekend.
My company is arranging my work visa, and my required health check. I just wondered if anyone else who had the health check can tell me more about it? is it intrusive? or quick and easy? do they take blood?
Just curious really, I have to have it anyway, but would like to know what to expect.
This isnt a question, I just wanted to share information in case it helps others.
Yesterday I was in a local souvenir shop buying gifts to take home. I know the girl who works there very well so I was relaxed and I guess you could say my guard was down.
I was looking at scarfs when another lady came into the shop, asking to see a scarf from the top shelf so my friend asked me to reach it. I did. The lady then wanted to see it on me, she wanted to picture the scarf on someone - of course it seemed weird, but I think I thought she knew my friend.
As I tried on the scarf she suggested i took off my backpack, I did and put it on the floor by my feet. She insisted on putting it on the side to ensure safety.
My instinct suddenly rang alarm bells, especially when she then asked to see another scarf high up on the shelf - thus distracting both my friend and I by looking up. Luckily my instinct was right and I quickly looked back to see her unzipping my bag and my wallet lying on the side.
I immediately took it back and took my bag. But being shocked and perhaps nervous, I didnt know what to do next. I was unsure how messy it could get if I tried to accuse her in my crap Vietnamese with no proof but my own eyes.
The lady was speaking to my friend in vietnamese. I quickly drew my friend aside and explained to her (she speaks a little English) what had happened. She was kind of confused... at which point the lady asked what was wrong.
I just looked at her and said "I know" - ok so I cant speak much Vietnamese!
She then left very very quickly saying she was shy.
I was able to talk my friend through it some more, and she realised exactly what had happened. Hopefully she can tell her other friends who work in the local shops and look out for this woman to prevent it happening to anyone else. (She is middle aged, dumpy and wears heavy make up.)
I am sure this is a common trick, distraction technique - they used to do it all the time in South America - it is often so quick that you dont have time to realise how odd the situation is. But perhaps if you know the trick before it happens...and if you have read this, perhaps you might be more aware too, and stop it before it happens.
Where can i buy red food colouring? or fake blood? whichever is more common here in Hanoi
Has anybody seen a copy of Fawlty Towers in the dvd stores around town? am desperately seeking it but cant see it anywhere. Haved asked but no joy yet. My internet is way too slow to download it.
Thanks

Aaah similar situation going on with my landlady - my rent is due on the 3rd but I saw her today as my water has stopped working. (fingers crossed she fixes it tomorrow as promised after our dong/dollar conversation)
So she is insisting on dollars - we told her we dont have any, that we are paid in dong. We even showed her a printed letter from ILA our employer to prove this. She said she will take us to the "free market" to buy dollar. We said no, it is illegal and that our company told us not to, etc etc. She isnt having it. I tried to stick to the "our company says" routine and telling her that we will pay the bank rate - but still she wont have it.
Aaaaah! we left it at that, she will come back on the 3rd and perhaps I should announce that we are leaving... cant see any other way for it to be solved.

Oh and she said that she needs dollars because her children are overseas at school so she needs to pay their fees.... yet a few months ago when we did have dollars she complained that one note was too old and she couldnt change it to dong! so she is blatantly lying.

we asked around today and they were buying dollars for 17,100 - but I had expected around 18 or 19....
Is it balancing out now?

Well just got back from the check today - a very long long day at Bach Mai hospital. No pap smear or anything terrifying (other than the toilets) but just a long day. Luckily I was with a group of colleagues and a lovely patient Vietnamese colleague who did her best to help rush us through. I believe our company was asked to pay around 900,000VND each for the pleasure - 400,000 more than they had expected.
If you are paying yourself, I would highly recommmend checking out the French hospital where my friend had his done for $70 and much faster.... altho I dont know any more details.
I'm glad its over!

You could try "le cochon d'or"
Their shop is on Tong Duy Tan, no.27. Worth going for the first time and picking up their price list - then you can call them anytime and they deliver various thing : sausages, cold cuts, pate, fresh meat, offal, smoked fish...they may not do fresh fish.
They speak English and French so makes ordering easy.
They have always been reliable and good value in my experience.

Dunno about Aussie beef, but for chicken, fish and other meats try Couchon D'or, 9 Tran Doan Khanh, 38293838
