Had a great time and met some interesting people. Fusion turned on a good evening of entertainment. The dancers were lovely and had many people rivetted to the spot. I had a great time taking a few shots and hearing some interesting stories.
Cheers all, and thanks to the NH crew for organising another great night!

Still a nice place, still love the ambience, but still no focaccia - still problems with the supplier apparently.
This is such a shame, especially when the food offerings tend upwards of 75k per serving.
Still, I love the coffee.

What a great outing this was!
Lots of interesting things to see, and we didn't even need the rain coats, fantastic!

We met on time, six of us heading out to the Silk Village, driver asking directions along the way - all's good and normal.
The Silk Village didn't have a 'villagey' feel to it, more like an outer suburbs, wall to wall tenaments effect, but as we got deeper into the place, the fresh market and later the farming plots along the river helped to transport "the mind" if not the body out of an urban like landscape.
The laqueur ware village was quite a surprise. First it's was pretty much 'closed' on account of an impending wedding, and possibly also dur to a surprising find - a Vietnames style 'voodoo' ceremony complete with Spirit Channeller slowly working herself into a trance. The people were friendly and invited us to take photos and later one of the nuns gave everyone a medicineball sized grapefruit-like citrus.
After walking around the village, and this one certainly was high on the 'village' scale, we were invited into a laqueurware factory to look at some items being prepared for export. As it was on the tail end of lunch, there wasn't much workier activity. The ownere explained also that they were closed due to the wedding and invited us to attend, if we were so inclinded to return the next day.
Finally we finished up at a Bia Tuoi guzzling Pacific Beers and fending off the drunken, but friendly, attentions of another patron.
All in all it was a great day out, full of suprises that just couldn't be anticipated or planned for.

This is one smooth, cool place to hang. They have knowledgable and skilled barmen, a nice mixture of seating with varying levels of brightness, and on opening night they had a roving magician doing tricks to the delight of adults and kids. The live flamenco/latin music was easy on the ears and cigars were circulating around. The first floor holds the bar, some table seating and a small platform stage. The second floor has a more restaurant feel to it.
Things to look out for, the lizard in the glass cage, the water fountains, branded drinks girls modestly struggling with floating dresses, and South American wall motifs. Other decorations include, nicely placed pottery, and b&w prints of Cuban Revolutionaries.
The menu is diverse and 'unexpected' for a steakhouse, so expect to see this evolve as the place matures. The drinks however, were great. Our party of six enjoyed a diverse mix of drinks and had a great time here.

My family and I are moving to Hanoi for at least the next two years. I am looking for advice on who to contact and how to find rentals (houses or apartments) nearby West Lake. We are looking for a lace with at least five 'bedrooms' some kind of garden and/or terrace, garage and an out building/large shed.
All advice and recommendations would be most welcome.
Hi,
I'm having trouble finding a part-time, Vietnamese House Keeper who, can cook, shop, clean, speaks English, German and Chinese (max. sal. USD100), any recomendations?
;-)
hi,
is anyone interested in one to two days of free tours in and around Hanoi on the 25th and 26th of this month?
I have a friend in the Travel industry that's looking for a few foreigners willing to trade being the subject of some photographs for some bona fide tours in and around Hanoi.
If you are interested, or know some people who might be interested please contact Mr Duc on m:0903283438
I've previously done such an activity and it took me to a small island on a river where they make rice paper, various pagodas of the beaten track and to meet an orchestra flautist, an artist and a famous Hanoi chef.

I don't think is generally available yet. It was supposed to be public released last month or early this month, but as far as I know people are still waiting in line for one.

Hi folks,
just an update, still spinning our wheels here (in Hamburg) due to visa complications. As of now, we will depart for Hanoi on the 14th of June and as soon as we settle, will start inspecting places that have been suggested to us.
Thanks one and all for your advice and recommendations.

@ Alexis,
n.p. shortly after my post they started turning up all over Hamburg too. Frustrating really, as I wanted to buy one about 3 weeks earlier and had to settle for the 400D.

Funny Stuff.
Ok, passport holders can get a Day Pass on presenting their passport.
If you have a Metro Card from another location or country, after your first visit, all you have to do is show your card and they give you a Day Pass.
If you want the local Metro Card, then you need to bring papers to validate your ID and that you belong to a qualifying business or organisation.
As such, it may pay to ask your employing organisation(if you're not running your own legit VN business) if they already have a METRO Card. If they do, you may be able to borrow that.
During work hours, is generally best to avoid the rabid crowds. Also, organise your own transport, as you may find it difficult to get a taxi (if you want one) back.
There are two METRO locations and they are both pretty far out. As for Big C, well if you live near Tay Ho, then that is also pretty far out - so it really depends on where you live. ;-)
In response to the question: Do you need a card to shop at metro? Can you only shop there if you have a business? How does it work?...

The price is a bit more than what we were paying our housekeeper for the same dutes, in China - she was with us for almost three years. On other posts, some have been suggesting the going prices are almost double this. :-(
As for languages, well, as you say, why would someone with four languages be working as a houseeper - glad you found, and enjoyed, the joke :-)

I use and recomend Mr Nyuyen Xuan Hau, 0913514744 He provides personalised repair services, as well as procurement. He was listed in the latest Hanoi Guide.
Depending on the brand and model of your desired monitor, it may or may not be available.
I recently obtained a Samsung SyncMaster 2253BW monitor (22", 2ms, 8000:1)It took several tries and about 10 days to get as it had to come up from HCMC and there are not many of them around.
Tran Anh have their own website and list quite a lot of stuff, but don't always have stuff in stock.

LOL! I really needed to read this, because the U-R was starting to bug me too. e.g., 'we had a great time...' - utter rubbish.
:-D Love It!
However, it did get me thinking along similar lines. My take was that a system message pop up to confirm 'what ever' answer rating was given, so that the person can stop an consider their impending action.
After this yo get an inbox item saying 'so and so thought your review [or comment etc.] was .....'
This would be great for networking, in in the case of U-R, well... followup if one shaould want or future reference.
In response to the question: Can we do something about the utter rubbish section. It seems that there are some people who are playing with this click. I agree with all the others ...

I have a reasonable understanding and 'qualified support' for the UR tag, I think there needs to be a valid mechanism for offering both positive and negative critique.
My concern is limited primarily to the anonymity factor and the relevance of the rating to the post. In my view, positive and negative feedback is needs to be directed at specific points in a post to be both valid and useful.
As for standards in offering critique, again my views are known and a longstanding matter of public record.

Lastly, I believe this is also an issue of building, developing and enhancing a sense of community, again something I've addressed elsewhere.

I "live" here, because I choose to live here. South East Asia is the place I've chosen to make my home in, for now.
After eight years in China, I plan for a min. of two more here.
ROFLMAO @ hippo.
What else can I do? coddle nuts? I don't think so.
Get jaded? been there done that, been flushed out the other end too.
At some point you've just gotta get on with what ever it is you do from day to day and make it work in whatever environment you happen to be in.
It just so happens that, for what ever reason, this is the one, I'm trying to make it all work in this one.
Cheers.
