I taught at this school on and off more than anybody probably. There is a lot of teacher turnover so the quality of teaching varies greatly. The school has grown a lot over the past few years with more and more classes and superfluous quasi-management positions. The teacher room itself isn't that good but the resources are actually pretty good. The vietnamese staff is above average in quality and efficiency by vietnamese standards. The address is now 36 Pham Tuan Tai. Same street, but it's been renamed 3 or 4 times. Decent place to work at from a teacher's perspective. Far from Hoan Kiem though.

Convinced that computers here are not fit for a gorilla to take a dump on, I have devised an ambitious plan. I am going to america soon to visit, so when I come back to hanoi I plan to have a modern desktop computer (no monitor) in my suitcase. However, the only thing I know about electronics is not to stick the fork in the socket. So,
1. Are there any obvious problems with this plan I am overlooking (electrical voltage problems, customs problems, etc)? Has anyone done this?
2. Where do I get a converter powerful enough to keep my computer running 24 hours a day? (Somewhere in Hanoi, or in America?)
3. Can I buy the monitor here, or does it have to be american too?

I pay 50,000 for 3-4 hours to my countryside maid with no english. For a live-in maid, I would try to pay something around 1 million a month. If she can spin straw into gold or turn water into wine then I think $250 is definitely an excellent price.
In response to the question: i want to know the rate of maid in vietnam i.e fullday (8hrs)and halfday(4hrs) 6 days per week....

Tim, Vietnam is testing your constitution. I didn't have a solid shit for my first 3-6 months here, and when I laid down in my bed I'd get all dizzy because the ceilings are so damn high. That which does not trigger the medical evacuation policy on your insurance makes you stronger.
In response to the question: This is half-question, half-gripe. My gf and I have been here for over months now, and we seem to be constantly afflicted with some annoying symptom ...

65 Nguyen Du street. It's a tiny little place with a blue vietnam airlines business sign. Bunch of travel agents packed in like sardines. The one I used is named Quynh. The phone number is 942-3535.
I just used them to book tickets about a month in advance. It's a little cheaper than what I paid in america to originally come to vietnam.
In response to the question: Can anyone recommend a good travel agency for booking tickets to and from the US? Might try to go home for the holidays and internet searches not turn...

Wow, I didn't actually think anyone would know that. Thanks for taking the time to answer. The reason I was/am planning to buy the monitor here is I'm worried about it surviving the trip overseas. Same with assembling the desktop inside the case first. Although it might be safer as separately packaged and protected pieces. I'll have to think about that.
Computers are much cheaper in america than here (and TVs, and microwaves, and....ok, I'll stop). I'll buy quality parts off the internet for a good price and slap it together. The computers here are so insanely priced and just plain old. For $500 here, you're gonna get something that was good in 2004, and is excellent at running games from...2004. I don't want to pay vietnamese prices for a modern computer here. Same with when I hear the outrageous prices people pay for cars here. It ain't gon happen with me.

I can't tell you much about living in Hoan Kiem, but from my experience, the housing agents will try to exploit you. Last time I was looking for a house, I used 4 or 5 of them. They showed me houses they clearly knew I would never accept and didn't want. They wasted almost all of my precious house hunting time on what were essentially wild goose chases, and I wound up settling for a terrible house because the clock ran out. It reminds me of when the taxi drivers circle all over town just to waste your time and money.

Yeah, I can strip out the parts and package them in the other suitcase, but that's gonna take up valuable suitcase space. That's gonna be a decision I have to make.
You are probably right about the LCD screen. And if I don't use it as a carryon, I can fit that in a suitcase easy. Looks like I'm gonna need an extra suitcase with all the shit I'll be bringing back.

Vietnamese people will be playing at some of the high schools and universities. I showed up at one of them when I first got here and I was like sir charles out there, and I'm not much. And that was the university team. But now that I've had a steady year and a half of absolutely no exercise whatsoever, I showed up at a high school and gassed out after 5 minutes. Those places aren't like a local playground, so if you find someplace reliable post about it on here. If you don't find noplace I'll play with you somewhere. People have been telling me about Van Phuc so I might check that one out.

I can't even walk out the door without wrestling three or four Neurocysticercosises. Usually they jump me when I get out the shower.
I visualize vietnam as a giant garbage can. Our hygenic abilities are so limited by our surroundings. There are 10's or even hundreds of equally valid concerns like that which are appropriate for any reasonable western mind. It's definitely good to be concerned and educated about these threats, but at some point you have to say fuck it, it's vietnam. One of the tradeoffs is the extreme lack of health and cleanliness. I'm still amazed how my house gets caked with dirt simply by existing, or how everytime vietnamese people see my vitamins they say "Ah! You're sick!"
In response to the question: Has anyone ever heard of these diseases? It turns out that their high prevalence, especially in the North of Vietnam, has inevitably been of concern t...

You are smart to ask for a reputable shop. After the movers graciously broke my computer last week and let my computer chair get stolen, I took the computer to a repair shop to get it fixed because I don't have the resources to troubleshoot a dead computer myself here. They fixed the broken hardware problem, but they created a bigger, more time consuming software problem just out of pure ignorance. So now I have to burn everything to dvd and format my hard drive. If at all possible, watch them when they mess with your computer.

I haven't been there. I will probably go sooner or later, but I'm not interested in all that mola ram eating hearts kind of shit. I was wondering what kind of snakes they have, and if they have constrictors you can buy. A python or even something like a rat snake would have probably done wonders for some of my old apartments here. Might even help with some of the neighborhood children.
In response to the question: Has anyone been to Le Mat (the snake village)? Is it cool? What's the best way to get there for a motorbikeless person? Would I need to hire a gui...

I got a bench, metal bar, plastic dumbells, and 84kg in plastic weights that I bought around there. I paid something like 4,000 or 5,000 per kg for the weights. The bench was 800,000, the bar maybe 100,000 or 150,000, the dumbell sticks were cheap.
I am heading back to america soon so I'll sell you any or all of that for 50% of what I paid (2000 per kg, 400,000 bench, 50,000 bar, free dumbells).
Come to think of it I got a bunch of shit. I might as well just make a post advertising it. Anyway my number is 09 3513 4022 if you are interested.
