We have been there once and had a Greek and Mediterranean salad and pumpkin soup. The food was quite good. In particular, the salads are pretty good and quite different than the salads you usually get. Ok , it might be a little bit pricey, but it was worth it.
It is also a nice place, they have a lot of books around. And the people there are very friendly.

Since I just live around the corner of this restaurant, I have been here several times. As Cheapie said, this place is very big and quite popular with locals. However, everytime I was there, there were also a lot of tourist groups.
The buffet is 120k and they have different salads and different other Vietnamese dishes, such as bun cá, nem, soups, fried shrimps/crabs etc. Even a small choice of non-Vietnamese food (such as noodles with cream sauce) is available. The dessert buffet is huge, a lot of fruits and fruit salad, creme caramel and the typical Vietnamese desserts. I think they have some basic dishes they offer every time, but some dishes are changed depending on the season.
And they have a live band every night, so don't come here for a very romantic dinner for two, then you will be disappointed.

Ordered Pizza there on a Tuesday where they have "buy one get one free". The Pizza was quite ordinary, but in my opinion absolutly overpriced. Ordered one saled, got three. Cannot really recommend this place.

I would like to buy a nice umbrella for my garden. Not this kind of plastic thing with a steel pole. I look for an umbrella with a wooden pole and fabric/polyester such as the umbrellas at Highlands coffee (or see pictures here: http://hl-umbrella.en.alibaba.com/product/200034895/51873999/garden_umbrella/Garden_Umbrella.html)
Has anyone an idea where to buy in Hanoi?
One of my two guinea pics died last night and I am now searching a new one as buddy for the other one.
Has anybody an idea where to find them in Hanoi? Any pet shops etc.? Any family out there who has one and is tired of it and want to give it away?

I think it really depends on you and your expectations.
My personal experience: I was also paid at least the main part of the shipping cost and decided to ship most of my goods from Europe. I had also no problems at all with the customs. I was glad to have my old things, in particular furniture, here, because of the following reasons. You might be able to buy all the furniture here. But first of all you have to know where to buy. And in case you have a little bit a different taste, it might be hard to find the right things here. And don't forget the language which is also sometimes a problem.
In response to the question: My husband I are moving to Hanoi in December. My company covers shipping, and we're trying to decide what/how much to bring. Are there certain househ...

Angel, I was at Metro today, no problem at all to get the day pass, you really need only your passport.
Big C is in the Southwest of Hanoi. Follow Nguyen Chi Thanh which then becomes Tran Duy Hung. You cannot oversee Big C when you pass by, it is really big.
Good luck!
In response to the question: Do you need a card to shop at metro? Can you only shop there if you have a business? How does it work?...

Angel, I got my Vietnamese driving licence, however, I was not really involved in the process since my company did all the paperwork.
I was told that the procedure should be as follows:
1. Go to the Transportation Administration office – 36 Cao Ba Quat Street to get the application form
2. You need your original driving license + a notarized (translated) copy
3. Origninal passport and a copy of the passport + visa
4. Letter from the employer
5. If you authorize somebody to do the procedure for you, an authorisation letter need to be provided
6. 2 photos size 2*3 and 1 photo size 3*4
Good luck!
In response to the question: NOW its come to my attention that International Driving licenses arent valid here and I should get a Vietnamese one!! How ?? where?? Anyone...?...

My driving licence is 5 years valid, even though my work permit is only for 2 years. Maybe this is now the standard period?

Hi Alexis,
First of all, you need somebody who speaks Vietnamese who could help you. And you need nerves of steel. My motorbike registration was a hassle; it took me more than 4 weeks (and 800 km) and I had assistance from my company.
Firstly, you need the red invoice issued by the motorbike shop. I had the problem that the shop owner did not want not give me the red invoice since he was in the opinion that I don't get the bike registered. You should insist in the red invoice.
Then you have to pay the tax for the motorbike at the tax department. The tax amount depends on the motorbike, my was around VND 1.2 million. I had to pay the tax at the tax department in the old quarter, but I was told that this depends on where you live. The tax department will issue a receipt which you need for the registration at the police. Please ensure that the name of the receipt is exactly your name (they write the name in the receipt by hand, in my case there was one letter not clear written, so the police did not accept the receipt).
After paying the tax, you have to go to the police. Take all your papers and your motorbike and go to the police at Ly Tuong Kiet street (I think it is number 89 or 86, not sure about the exact number).
In my case, they required a notarized copy of my work permit, a notarized copy of my passport, the official registration that I live here, the tax receipt, the original invoice from the motorbike shop and the original labour contract with my employer. The police will check the bike on site for the serial number.
After providing all the necessary documents, the police will issue the plate within a few days (hopefully they issue the plate correctly, in my case the issued a wrong plate and it took one week longer to get a new one). The registration fee at the police is VND 1 million.
Have fun and good luck with the registration!!!

Jeff, I had the same issue. I booked a tour to Halong bay and they required the passport for the overnight stay. In this case, the copy of my passport was ok for them. However, I doubt whether you could use just a copy when you take a flight.
In response to the question: I need to turn in my passport to get a visa to travel outside Vietnam. In the meantime I need to travel within Vietnam and need to know if I can do so...

There are a lot of plant sellers on Dang Thai Mai, thats true. But I experienced that the prices there are quite high.
There is another street where they sell mainly plants, it's on Duong Hoang Hoa in Ba Dinh Distr., the parallel street where Sommerset Westlake is located. They sell plants at cheaper prices and I mean that I've seen there orchids too.
In response to the question: I'm looking to buy a plant, specifically a Phalaenopsis orchid and don't know were to look. I see the women on the streets peddling lots of stuff b...

I haven't been to "Western Canned" on Ba Trieu food for a while but I remember that I have seen a springform pan and other baking forms there (last year).

You can buy Guinea pics on Hang Da market. They may not have them displayed, you have to ask and they will bring it (you need one who speaks Vietnamese to help you).
However, you should consider buying two of them since Guinea pics are very social - you should not keep one alone.
In response to the question: do anyone know where i can buy a guinea pig or hamster in hanoi? is there a pet shop or does veterinary clinic have small pets for sale? my kids wants...

We bought our Guinea pig end of July, in the very hot season.
As I said, you cannot see them on the market, you have to ask the vendors. We went there together with a VN speaking person who helped us to ask around.
