One of my favoritest places in Hanoi. The lemon 'tower' of smoothiness is sooo delish, great seafood, and an amazing location to work mid-morning or mid-arvo. A well-kept secret, with great staff as well.

Green Mango doesn't have rats. It doesn't have cats. It just has fantastic food, great music, FABULOUS service, and an unprecedented atmosphere. If you come to Vietnam, you will get food poisoning. If you live in Vietnam, you are very likely to get sick on a regular basis, no matter where you eat. I'm sad to hear about your poor experience at the Green Mango, but I would strongly recommend you give it a second chance. I think you'll be delightfully surprised. Come to the August meet-up there, and give it another try!

I'm not really new to Hanoi, but I find myself coming back to this classic favorite time and again. The food is always great, and the service is unprecidented. LePub is my home away from home, and the individuals involved in this endeavor are my family away from family. Need I say more?

WARNING!
For those of you looking for housing to rent, steer CLEAR of Pho Van Cao, at the end of Lieu Giai! On Alley 33, house number 3, there is an operation going. I went with a trusted real estate agent to check out a house from a prospective landlord he had never met or worked with before, and I wasn't allowed to park my motorbike in the courtyard, since there wasn't a lot of room, and we were only going to be in the house for a few minutes to look at it. I LOCKED my motorbike, and we went inside to look at the house, which supposedly had the 3 bedrooms that we were looking for. The house wasn't prepared to be rented, and there was furniture and belongings everywhere (they seemed very settled in the place). Additionally, I wasn't allowed to look out the balcony as we were touring through the home (in heinsight, probably because I would have seen the person taking my motorbike)...anyway, I don't know whether the woman was involved or NOT, but after less than 2 minutes of being inside, I discovered that my motorbike had been taken, the entire neighborhood was laughing about it as we walked down the alley, and when the police returned to the house to question her, she had left and locked up her house. SO BEWARE of these things, even when you lock your bike or feel that it's safe where you leave it, it ISN'T fully safe unless someone is WATCHING IT! I know this seems silly, but it's an important reminder for everyone in our online community! Be careful!

Hey, I'm a graphic designer. I'll be available for work from mid-July. I typically don't self-program, but I can design. SO if you can find a programmer for your work, I'm willing to help you out, depending on my schedule if/when I come back to Hanoi. Cheers.

Let's get real, you hippo person. There are no men in Hanoi. Whoever says or thinks otherwise is...um...an idiot. I'm not making a personal crack at you, because apparently your comment is research-based. However, let's just say I'm going to go ahead and go with my own research on this one.
Miss Hanoi, time to schedule a trip to SexyLand. I'm sure the ticket price- whatever it is- will be more than worth it.

wow, this is getting serious.
abslakin: indeed, there is nothing wrong with viets. thank you for the friendly reminder to the wise.
hippo: your sorry excuse for a logical response is (a) not addressing the original question, (b) digressing from the purpose of the queries section of New Hanoian, and (c) highly irritating.
however, i'm sure the majority of women in this little forum group will find the following information helpful: 65% of the population in this country we all know and love ranges from adolescent boys to elderly men. profound.
Perhaps we can organize a group rate to SexyLand? Who's in, ladies?

This is getting out of control.
Qwerty: good question, to which there is a plethora of answers. Is it perhaps a subtle suggestion that you choose places based on the availability of relationships there, not the opportunities for self-discovery and/or personal development and fulfillment?
Teacherman: touche, touche. I think we can all agree that there are many many great people living in Hanoi. Just like any other location, the bugger is finding one you relate to in the ways you wish to relate...
Wesmo: ideals by conceptual essence are undefinable, thus why I believe this discussion thread has been BLOWING UP, and why we are all asking these questions to begin with.
Miss Hanoi: I think what you mean is that cucumbers DO 'cut it' and that's why they're not the best choice, given these circumstances.
MissKiss: I'm afraid you've paved a pretty difficult road for any real man to follow. Godspeed to you.

Agreed on the drinkies meeting. Bring these gems of men you seem to know.
Wesmo, not plenty to choose from. A beating heart is indeed a physical characteristic, but also spans across the vast divide into emotional, mental, and spiritual assets as well.
Unfortunately, to have a beating heart in all four areas seems to be the issue.
Oh, yeah. And I'm into dudes. It all comes full circle, people.

I feel this discussion taking a patronizing tone, when I do believe the original question was asked in trust and honesty. I think we can all agree that positive actions lead to positive relationships and positive lives, and self-destructive tendencies stemmed from experiences (possibly at Mao's) are just that...with unfortunate potential to take a turn for the worst. But I think it goes both ways- in majority, you get what you seek, and whom you surround yourself with certainly effects your overall outlook.

I don't want to cause a stir here, but to be diplomatic about the situation, why don't you make an itemized list of EXACTLY what she does in a week? You can sit down separately, and put a value to each item. Then switch your lists, and see where the disconnect is. Assess, discuss, make necessary changes. Problem solved.

If you don't mind a little drive, try the Army Hotel pool. It's a cheaper saltwater option, and you can purchase monthly memberships for a reasonable price. Usually very quiet in the early mornings or late evenings for lap swimming, but stay away midday- LOTS of boisterous children and adults everywhere, and they tend to not be so polite/accommodating to lap swimmers.

The police took my, Vinh (the real estate guy's) and my friend's 'statments.' They drew a map, visited the house and alley numerous times in the course of 4 hours, and took all of our contact numbers. The police in charge of all crime against foreigners showed up halfway through, and asked me to give my written statement again, so they have it in both Vietnamese & English.
Interestingly enough, when the police when back to the house, the landlady had left and her house was all locked up. Hm...
Additionally, I'd like to add that since the incedent, Vinh has called me and personally offered use of one of his family's motorbikes free of charge for as long as I need it, and 3 of his previous foreign clients rang me to vouch for his character.
Bobthebob, it was only the steering carriage that was locked. Keep in mind this bike was taken in less than 2 minutes. They're getting good!

I'd go with Yinka's suggestion. It's a GREAT run, along Xom Chua, off of Dang Thai Mai. If you're into graffiti art at all, the road is COVERED in it! Lots of different route options, hardly any traffic, and a great view of the lake. Good luck! Send a message if you're looking for a running partner!

The best luck I've had is the camera store on Hang Trong, south of Nha Tho. The owner is there sometimes, and really knows his stuff. If he doesn't have something, you can usually order it.

You should send him to Dr. Tran Huong, she does accupuncture for aid in dealing with addictions.
