I bought a dry cabinet recently. It controls the humidity level inside (powered by mains electricity).
The smallest one is $80 which would be big enough for a few lenses, maybe 2 camera bodies, and a few other bits and pieces. A-Dong Photo has lots of sizes.
It is really important to keep you gear dry, especially lenses, and especially in the cooler weather. 6 of my lenses suffered from fungal growth during the high humidity and low temperatures of March/April this year.
Failing a dry cabinet, you can seal gear in zip-lock bags with packets of silica gel.

question: what do you guys do to keep ur camera from sweating in this sauna? my sister said there is some type of box to keep the camera from humidity. I saw some and it's made from plastic so i don't know how protective it could be. Help plz?

Fiesta sounds great! It'd be cool to look at the fotos fresh off the trip and share our thoughts. either or both or neither. but one is nice.

Hey folks,
It's time to organise the September meet!
Proposed date: Saturday, 20th September.
Let's have some suggestions for a venue/trip for the day, please. PM, SMS, or post here.
Suggestions for a venue so far:
-Silk Village
-Laquerware Village
-Aircraft musuem
Like last time, I will arrange four wheeled transport for those that don't drive or would like to save their backsides the pain of going by motorbike. I need to know at least three days before though, so I can get the right transport.
We'd aim to meet early in the morning (0800 or so), and be back for early evening.
I think it'd be cool if we could end the day with a few drinks and a meal too.
Let me know if you're interested in going. I'll update the event in the calendar once details have been decided.
Look forward to seeing all of you on the 20th!

nice to see more ppl joinin this group.Sep meet up will be a blast. Anyone interested in going to the silk village? it sounds neat. i haven't been there.
posted about 2 weeks ago by loominpapa

Hi VietSam.
All are welcome, no flashy photography equipment required. There'll be one in September, just need to work out the details.
Check the message board here, emails will be sent as well.

I'm really interested in coming along to one of these meet ups... I have no flash photography gear, but my little digital may suffice! Please let me know when the next one is on!
Cheers

Hey i am new to this group. Just wondering if anyone interested in a random photoshoot next week?i have an idea but would like to go shoot with someone else as well! Also, i am working on an organic farming project with a village outside of the city and would need a volunteer photographer in the near future to take photos for promotional materials...in return you get a nice escape from a city and clusters and perhaps some delis veggies. if you are interested, plz msg me.
thanks
p.s OH and anyone here knows much about DSRL 40? i just got a new one and would appreciate some mentoring even i've figured quite a bit on my own as well.
posted about 3 weeks ago by loominpapa

OK, so the meet up is this Saturday.
Members coming are (at the last count) grubby, TSC + 2, Arundati +1, Granteralus, Loominpapa.
In total that's 8. Anyone else, let me know.
TSC's trying to arrange a minivan, or some such transport to get us there, but I assume some of you will want to drive. Let me know if you need transport.
Where would be the best place to meet? I assume somewhere fairly central, so let's say by the entrance to The Huc (Red) Bridge on Hoan Kiem lake.
I think it would be worthwhile heading out as early as possible to make the most of the morning - I was thinking of 08:00. Any problems with that?

My name is Nick. Moved to Hanoi two months ago. Former USAF photographer. Feel like getting back into it abit. Recently ordered some FSU (film) cameras and glass on ebay. Might need some gadgets and do-dads. Will need to know where I can get some e-6 and possibly B&W processed with digital scanning onto a CD.
Can anyone give me some reccomendations on shops where I can buy this pseudo-Leica stuff and some good "normal price" processing and scanning?
Private message OK.
Thanks,
Nick

OK, I'll find out about transport. Anyone who wants to split a taxi / minivan let me know ASAP.
posted about 3 weeks ago by TscTempest

I don't have a bike either, so I'll ned transport too. :-)
posted about 3 weeks ago by loominpapa

OK, looks like it is Saturday then (Guffman, hopefully we can do one on a Sunday next time).
Arundati I assume you'll be motorbiking then?
Who else needs transport?
I don't drive a bike so I'll be looking into options. Let me know ASAP.
posted about 3 weeks ago by arundati

Yeah, I like Vong village too, despite the fact that nearly nothing left there :( Wait to the October...
If we go all the day, we'll have rather much time, enough for visiting to Dong Ho, both are famous tourist spots and near to each other.
I register for me and 1 more friend. Saturday is better for me too.
I prefer bikes to car because of the mobility. The scene on the way can't be ignored. But car is safer :)
posted about 3 weeks ago by TscTempest

Hi loominpapa, I may have some more (+3?), I'll call you when I get back. Travelling today, so you should hear from me in the next couple of days. :-D
posted about 3 weeks ago by loominpapa

Phu Lang sounds good to me. (I also like the idea of Vong village, but that sounds like it would be better in the early autumn).
Looks like we've got 5 people, so we could hire transport to get there and back. 50km should take about 60 - 90mins to get to, I reckon.
Saturday would be the best day for me, any problems with Saturday?
Thoughts on transport?
Let me know then I'll put it in the events calendar.
posted about 4 weeks ago by TscTempest

Hmmmm, I like the idea of Phu Lang.
[I like "happy snapping," most of my tavel pics are nothing more than that] :-D
posted about 4 weeks ago by arundati

I recommend 2 spots : Dong Ho Painting village, and Phu Lang Earthenware village.
But it's rather far from the centre of Hanoi, about 50km. So, we need enough bikes. Otherwise, Bat Trang - ceramics village is the choice, only 10km and we can go by public bus (But personnally, I think it's somehow commercialized now).
PS : I'm not a professional photographer, so I don't care much about the techniques as you do...
posted about 4 weeks ago by TscTempest

Here's a write up on some of the craft villages:
http://www.vnviews.com/vietnam-travel-misc/craft/Vietnam-The-Craft-Villages.php
And here's a list on some (I think) which are probably close enough for a quik visit:
Bat Trung Ceramics Village
Van Phuc Silk Village
Le mat Snake Vilage
Doi Tam Drum-making Village
Dao Phuc or Hoi Cham Tam Watter Puppet making villages
Dong Ho Painting Village
Dong Ki Wood Sculpture Vilage
Phu Lang Earthenware Vilage
Buoi Paper making Village
Chuong Conical (Non) Hat Village
Van nam Embroidery village
De Cau or Dong Mai Bronze Casting Villages
Can we clarify, just what people want to photograph?
Is it something specific requiring a particular approach and/or technique and we discuss/try that out?
OR
Day tripping and 'happy snapping' what ever we stumble across?
OR
Some other purpose?
What's the stimulus or motivation we're aiming for here, on this trip? Answering these questions might help to select the most suitable 'next' location.
BTW, I'm keen to photograph craftspersons in the process of making something, from raw material collection through to finished product, i.e. documenting a production process. How about you?
posted about 4 weeks ago by grubby

a trip to an outlying village sounds alright. This time I'll bring me 'A' lenses.
posted about 4 weeks ago by loominpapa

Arundati - sound like a good idea. Any of those you would recommend?
posted about 4 weeks ago by arundati

Me : maybe.
But a little confused because I find it's different between views of foreigners and locals.
What's about the suburb ? a trade village like Tho Ha, Phu Lang, Bat Trang...

How about an August meet-up?
Weekend of 23rd/24th (Day to be decided).
Any takers?
Any suggestions for location?
Let me know by Weds 14th, and I'll create an event in the calendar.

Hi folks, anything coming up later this month? I'm currently in Hmburg, Germany and woun't be back unti the 14th of August and I'm keen to go out and "paint with light" any time after that.
Aslo, a quick thanks to loominpapa for organising the get together at Lenin Park, I was actually on the way there, but an unforseen issue came up at home and I had to bail.
Some of the pics from the shot look really great! Especially the guy on the bench, and the tent :-D

Does anyone here know if there's a place where I can rent Canon lenses by the day? I need a 24mm for a job, but don't really care to own one. Or rather don't really care to spend the money to own one.
Thanks a lot.

Hi Arundati,
Welcome
I've always both sent the message to the group and posted it here, as well as announced on the Flickr Group I've set up to share the photos. The reason I didn't create an event this time was due to lack of response about the propsed event. A few of us eventually decided to meet up when we met in person at the New Hanoian bash the Friday before
I hope we can get a few more members together for another meet up in August - suggestions welcome.

Hi folks,
I'm newbie to photography and also this group. So sorry I missed the last meeting.
Loominpapa, if you make the next meet-up someday, please "Send a msg to this group", or "Creat an event", do not "post it here". Maybe some members don't log in frequently, like me :)
Hope to join you in the near future.
Thanks so much.

Hi everyone,
I hope to organise a meet up for the weekend of the 18th/19th July.
I was thinking it would be a nice idea to get out of the city and take day trip to somewhere near Ha Noi.
Was thinking of Duong Lam village or some such place.
A tour could be arranged or just transport.
It's be nice to get a meet up with at least half of the group - any takers?

Hello folks,
well I finally got around to getting my first pics of Hanoi and Hung Yen up online. They're not great but they do represent my very first contact with Vietnam.
I've looked at some of the pics here and I think they're quite cool.
In the meantime, you can have a look at my first offerings at http://www.tsctempest.com/

Hello folks,
Well. It has been a long drawn out process, our getting a visa for Vietnam, but I hope we will be among you within the next couple of weeks. I'd love to hook up with some of you and go out and take some photos of some interesting places. In the mean time, just a bit of news, I was recently selected as "Artist of the Month" for http://www.creative88photo.com so why not check it out. Cheers to all, hope to meet and see you soon.

I will be out and about with my camera on Saturday 31st (this coming Saturday). Should anyone want to spend the afternoon taking pictures, I will wait at Papa Joes coffee at the top of Hoan Kiem Lake between 2 and 3pm.
Come and join me and we'll go and take pictures of the old quarter and surroundings, or just come for a coffee and chat about photography!
It'd be nice if we could finally get some of the group together.
posted about 3 months ago by loominpapa

Right. A meet up is required - I'll find a place and a date sometime this week/next weekend.

Pinhole Camera Day was fun. I made a pinhole attachment for my 400D using a bodycap and the sticky label off of a packet of ground black pepper and I made a hole using the tip of a 0.4 mm syringe. Like I said, a good, fun day.

I'll be using film. I've got an old medium format camera converted ti pinhole and one I've made myself. Both need a little work though...

Hi Loominpapa,
what gear do you plan to use on Sunday? And will you be using Film or Digital?
posted about 4 months ago by loominpapa

Don't know if anyone's interested, but it's Worldwide Pinhole Day this Sunday.
If you're into taking pinhole photos - this Sunday is the day to do it! I'll be doing so, weather permitting...

A ideal photographic trip with minority groups, sport events, buffalo fighting, face painting, music, etc, etc, all against the stunning backdrop of Ba Be Lakes.

Hello all members!
As the creator of this group, Im sorry for not having enough time to organize a meeting up or not yet a trip for taking photos. I was very busy last days and my schedule is tough this month. But Im thinking about holding a meeting up at first. Saturday 5th Jan is ok for all of you? after that on February (after Tet) we can take a trip to somewhere (it is expected to have cool photos in Spring time)
Time for 5th Jan: 3pm
Place: someone could suggest any place? (My suggestion: Noc bar (19th floor, 671 Hoang Hoa Tham - there is great view of the city - hope that it will be sunny)
Anyway I would prefer another suggestion that you think it is better)
Please confirm me by posting a confirmation in this group, thank you! See you somewhere!

How do you think about the plain of Red river? or from a high building? a bar in a high building, for example ILU bar would be good for taking picture of Hanoi in the sunset...Or some ancient village around Hanoi like Duong Lam village, I've heard about it but never been there. What are ur ideas?
