This place is set in a wonderful location and is a perfect way to start your night.
The food can be hit or miss. There are times my food has been wonderful and times it has been a near disaster.
I used to come to this place a few times a month, but in the past few years I have seen the quality decline a bit.
I tired it again a month or so ago and I'm happy to say it seems to be on the up swing again.
The staff is always nice, yes they make mistakes from time to time, but that's the point isn't it?
I've taken a number of visitors here over the years and they have all been impressed by the food and service.
If you haven't been here yet, it's worth a go.

I really wanted to like this place, but I'm sad to say I won't be going back.
I've been to many Massage parlors and I've never been so disappointed.
I asked for the aroma therapy massage(180,000 and the most expensive on their list).
The massage was way too hard but I've had many rough massages, which have left me relaxed in the end, so I went with it. Unfortunately this one left me feeling like I had a bruised back 2 days.
There wasn't much aroma therapy in the massage. The amount of oil they used was stingy at best. I mostly felt like I was having a dry massage. The room was cold and my feet were freezing the whole time. In the end they did not was off my body with a cloth or offer me a shower. I was simply asked to get dressed. This means the little oil they did use was left on my body.
The beds were comfortable, but the head rest was not attached to anything and kept slipping away from my head.
I will say that the staff was very friendly and professional.
I think this is a great opportunity for blind people in Hanoi, and we need more, but they need to take the time to properly train the staff in the art of massage.
The prices are great but they just don't do a good massage.
I hope they take some time to work things out.

This has been my go to shop for the past 4 years. They have an okay selection of DVD's and CD's. They have list of CD's but they can't always get what is listed.
They have changed their display system numerous times, and the latest seems the most confusing. Now when I go I have a list in hand, I give it to the staff and within 5 minutes I have everything I'm looking for (if they have it in stock or a good quality copy). As stated before they are happy to tell you if it is a good copy or not. It saves me time in having to preview them. Also, if I take them home and they don't work they are happy to exchange.
I would give them 3 stars if only they reworked the display. Try alphabetical, it's a great system!

à propos de l'endroit: Asian Veterinary & Livestock Services (ASVELIS)

I've used this vet for the past few years for my cat. I've taken her there for all of her shots and her checkups. They are kind and gentle with her. I felt very comfortable leaving her there overnight when she was spade.
I've also taken her there for deworming a few times.
They have limited number of cat and dog toys, brushes and other related items.
They also sell high quality food, but you'll have to pay a bit for it.
I was also able to get a cat carrier from them. They brought it up for me from HCMC. It only took a few weeks to get it.
It makes transporting her MUCH easier.
If you have issues with fleas they sell the behind the neck drops.
My cat was also implanted with a computer chip, so that when I leave her records can be matched to her chip.
If you have any questions they are happy to answer them over the phone.
Very good vet by most standards.

This one of the better SuperMarkets in Hanoi.
They have a nice supply of household items, cooking supplies, cleaning supplies, and personal care items.
They also have some groceries available. You can most of your dry good needs. They have a decent selection of dairy products.
They also have started to stock meats, (chicken, pork and beef). The chicken and pork are nice, but the beef is very tough.
They have freezer section where you can get seafood and some veggies.
If you find yourself in a pinch and need a quick bottle of wine, they have a few to choose from.
For the most part prices are just above what you will get at the little neighborhood store, but the upside is that you can find most everything in one stop.
For some reason they like to completely rearrange the store about once a month, so be prepared to search for items. They aren’t always where you think they would be.

Does anyone know where Indochine Natural Co. Ltd. moved to? They were at 30 Quan Su, but they are no longer there. The New Hanoian page on them says they have moved, but I can't seem find where they've gone.
Anyone know?
If not do you know where I can get some nice quality natural soap?

I just bought a new helmet at Yamaha Town near the Vincom Towers.
They have full faced helmets, but I went with one that was not full faced. I'm not ready to make that move yet. The one I did by covers the cheeks and back of the neck. I've had it for a few weeks and I love it. There is space and cushion of the ears. It also has a face shield that will be great for the cold winter that is sure to come as well as in the rainy season.
The cost was 800,000 vnd. A lot more then just around the corner on Pho Hue, but I like knowing I have the real thing.
The helmets are made in Thailand.
Good luck and drive safe!

I went with the Dunlopillo for 150,000. Not sure if this is high or low, but it worked for me.
The is also a shop in Vincom that has sheets. It's on the 2nd or 3rd floor on the west side of the mall. They have a few designs and colors to choose from, but they are not cheap.
Good luck everyone

Like anywhere you should be upfront and honest with people. You'll find that most people don't want to make others upset or uncomfortable no more than you want them to be.
When I first came here I ran in to similar cultural issues. I have now taken the stance that if I am uncomfortable with a situation I don't do it. I just politely explain that I am not interested or comfortable with it and that it is not normal for me.
I have found this to work very well, and I no longer feel I have to eat the boiled chicken skin or the dog that is served to me.
Good luck and just be honest.

Try Oregano Deli http://newhanoian.xemzi.com/en/venue/show/530/Oregano-Deli on Kim Ma. They have some nice meat (hams) and cheese. The prices are the best in town. They have nice breadsticks you can use for sandwiches.
Also just up the street from there is a Nguyen Son Bakery. They have a round bread that is nearly a sour dough.
Also there is a bakery in the driveway of the Daewoo. They have some great bread there as well.
Good luck

There's a great shop on Ngoc Khanh. It's not too far from the convention center and is on the opposite side of the street of the Rose Garden.
It's the closet thing I have found to Western style electronic shops.
I'm sure you also buy a new one from the provider.

It's not cold in Hanoi just yet. The few cold days we had last week was just a small taste of what Hanoi will do. Last year was the coldest in 20 years (so I've been told). It didn't really start getting cold until around this time. I suspect it will be much colder in January and February than it is now.
It is also going to get a much wetter, not in the form of rain, but in the form of humidity. The walls will start to cry with moisture and your clothes, bags, and book shelves will start to mold (for real).
What to do? Wear layers, find a warm and wind proof jacket. Make sure you do your laundry long before you need it. It will take days to dry. I have found my clothes dry much faster inside than outside this time of year.
Also, I go the space heater way. I bring it from room to room and make sure I turn it off when I go. I also never use a power strip for my heaters; I fried about 3 last year before I got the idea.
I also bought a few electric water bottles. These things are great. All you need to do is plug them in for 5 - 10 min and they stay warm for hours. They are wonderful!
Bundle up, it's going to be a long few months.

I'm not Vietnamese, but I've usually go with the gift baskets. You can buy them at the super markets, or on the streets. When I need a special one I go to a nice shop. There is a great one a 1B Ham Long. It's a deli of sorts, but I can't think of the name just now.
They make really nice baskets and have a pretty nice choice of items, anything from cookies, teas, coffee, candy, wine and whisky.
If you order a few they are more than happy to deliver them to you.
Also don't forget the card and the lucky money!

There are also private tutoring opportunities available. They will pay from $15 to $30 an hour. You just need to find an in, and be comfortable teaching in a one on one situation.
Also don't forget to check the Job section on the NewHanoian. There are new job posts weekly. I would recommend asking around about specific schools, since some of them are better at actually paying than others.
Also, if you do decide to go with a fake CELTA beware the better schools are smart enough to look up the certificate online to see if it is real or not. Besides it’s not necessary to be such a dodgy person.
Come on people!

You can go with the dried fruit, but they’re much like the fruitcake of Vietnam. Everyone gifts them, but not many like them.
Bottles of wine would work fine, but it might be too heavy to check on the plane.
Try buying some boxes of nice chocolate. They will go a long way and won't take up too much room, best to take in your carry on if possible.

Also Pagoda, if you do go with a tree I would make sure you take a Vietnamese to help you pick it out. There are a lot of superstitions associated with Tet and the trees.
If you go with an orange tree is important that the fruit is at the right ripeness and stage of growth. For the cherry tree the blossoms need to at the right stage, fullness and thickness. The right or wrong tree can make all the difference at Tet.
The price of the tree will also help determine the Tet value of the tree.
I suggest you think carefully about which type and size of tree you buy.
Good Luck!
