hi kids. anyone know anything about a shakedown in HCMC on foreign motorbike drivers without vietnamese licenses? we read on daves esl cafe that some peeps are receiving fines and having their bikes impounded. just hoping this is apocryphal and not heading to hanoi. p.s. we were totally baked on shrooms when we wrote this...were not naturally this paranoid...well, yes...ha ha...no, just kidding....actually, yes...no no no.
I've heard several times that houses in Vietnam only last a decade or so then they pretty much have to be rebuilt. So in other words you can invest in land but you have to write off any investment in the property that sits on it - in 10 years. My question is - is it not possible to make something last "forever" as homes do elsewhere? It seems that so much of what really damages Hanoi's environment is linked to building. The big trucks, the noise, the dust etc. Surely - sort the quality o...
I was wondering where I could find GMAT study materials in Hanoi? More specifically books with practice problems of the quantitative and verbal sections Thanks.
Just to explain what I mean by that; a regular or "vanilla" atheist might say "I do not share your beliefs but I do respect them". Whereas a strong atheist will say "I do not share your beliefs and thats because they are utterly ridiculous and unworthy of my respect. In fact if you really believe in all that then perhaps you should see a doctor. Do you seriously expect me to show respect for such obvious infantile nonsense? You're joking, right?"
Does any know anything about an apparent exchange rate freeze by the tax department that I'm told applies for 6 months at my company. In the past they have always been accurate but I noticed this month the rate is 18473 which is lower than the 19100 it should be...when I asked what has happened here they replied that the tax department said there is a 6 month period where this rate will apply. I think this is Bull Sh*t but am wondering if anyone has been told the same???
Does anyone know of a site where people who have a duty free car and are leaving, advertise their car for sale to others who have a duty free car purchase entitlement?
NHL Playoffs are about a month away. Now Im sure this is probably 99.9999% unnoticed in Hanoi, but I was wondering if there were any places in town which would be showing a few games?
Hallo everybody, iam Vietnamese but living in Germany since 6 Years. I want to know what are u doing in Hanoi, are u just a traveler or are u living there. And what do u want to have more in Hanoi? Thanks for answering.
Hi, My Mother (aged 79) is arriving from Australia in two weeks to live with us for 6 months. Considering her age; she is active, loves walking and attends a gym back home 3 times a week. Her interests are painting, movies and singing. Could anyone please suggest some groups; community groups; singing groups; NGO's that she could join? We live in Tay Ho but her mode of transport will be a taxi. Thanks!
I'm getting married in late October in Hanoi. I'm looking for a decent venue for an evening do. Ideally it would be somewhere where we can do our own catering. We just want a bar, and also want somewhere where we can have loud music and dancing. Would like it to be central Hanoi. A restaurant or hotel would be one option but is there anywhere more creative than that? Somewhere cost effective and easily reached that could hold 100 people. Outside would be great.
Hi, We are aware that adoptions from Vietnam to the US are currently suspended - but does anyone have any insights on Vietnam-to-Australia adoptions? Does anyone have any advice or guidance to offer on the procedures by which non-resident Australians (residing in Singapore) might go about adopting from Vietnam? Is there a government agency in Hanoi we should channel through, or do we need to try and approach orphanages directly? Any guidance much appreciated. Thanks, P & K
Football - 5-a-side or 11-a-side. (soccer to the Americans out there) Are there are expat leagues or teams currently running in Ha Noi? I'd love to join a team.......

My husband and I are moving to Hanoi at the end of the year with our 6 month old baby. I would like to do some part time teaching (about 3 afternoons a week) and was wondering what kind of options for child minding are available other than hiring a nanny. I have looked at a number of nursery schools/kindergartens online and the minimum age seems to be 18 months. Any suggestions?
I had an earlier question but as this is very different I'm asking it independently. Can anyone comment on the quality of broadband available in Hanoi? I will need broadband to my home as I work remotely so which is the fastest and most reliable provider and approximately how much does it cost? Thanks again for your help! Rob
Can anyone tell me or recommend a College/University that might be looking for a Lecturer specialising in Hospitality or tourism? Thanks
As far as I can see this question has not been asked before. After three years in Hanoi we will be leaving in June and I would like to know what the norm is regarding severance grants for house staff. I am sure that the labour law provides you with a formular with which to calculate the grant but it often tends to be the absolute minimum and not what is common practice. Any take on this?
Hanoians, Do any of you know where I can find a stylish and functional daytimer/dayplanner? I have searched the stationary shops on Ly Thuong Kiet and the bookstores around Hoan Kiem, and I can only find dayplanners that have a calendar and then a book of blank pages or a not very stylish week-in-view dayplanner. I'd like a full-page day-in-view. I really love my old moleskin one but does such a thing (or similar) exist in Hanoi?
Hanoi Dragons are, or were, a Rugby team playing out of Hanoi that I had heard of before I moved to this neck of the woods. I have tried to contact them with no luck. Through discussions with a few knowledgeable expats I have established that they have probably disbanded. I am hoping any former Dragons can get in touch with me to confirm this. They are still on top spots for training on Saturdays. If they have dissolved would former Dragons be interested in getting the ball rolling again? A...
Hi all, The question is simple : is it possible to use a prepaid SIM card abroad (Thailand, as far as I'm concerned) ? If so, is there anything special to do before leaving ?
... is The New Hanoian's Q&A forum. If you've got a question about life in Hanoi that you think you should pose to someone in the know, here is the place to do it.
