Watch out for the bogus restaurant reviews here, the ones where someone obviously has a personal axe to grind, or has been miffed by some minor flaw in service and gets all indignant, taking it as a personal affront and seeking revenge by badmouthing the place.

Don't "Utter Rubbish" a Utter Rubbish Review. You'll upset the writer, and be hunted down like a wild animal.

lots of taxi scams such as taking you all over the world and souped up meters (only take taxis that have their meters enclosed in that glass thing). Also be careful as that people will try to get you when you rent an apartment. Inflated rents and inflated utility bills.

this question deserve a blog on its own !

here is a short list:

- taxi: safe ride: Hanoi taxi, CP taxi, or big company. The meter starts maybe higher but go slower than the small ones.

- taxi: funny, these guys never have change to give you back!!! either have always small change, or just play the game, if you show you are not in a hurry and can wait for him to get change, it suddenly found some in his very deep pocket.

- utility bills: a classic one, you will pay for your landlord or some else electricity and/or water.

- expiry date in food shop: even in popular food shops in the expat community, i found really out dated can food or other items.

i'm sure there is more but that's it for now.

If someone wants to add just copy/paste the list and add yours. that could end up being a useful list for Hanoians.

cheers

Our school always uses Mai Linh taxis as most of the others will scam you with dodgy metres that go faster the more they toot their horn or change CD volume. Too many scams. When I first arrived I remember the driver fiddling with a button on the metre once I got in the cab. So bloody blatant I just got back out! Mai Linh are all white with green writing.
