Really good food, but matching prices. Good sigh: you can find Indians among the staff and the visitors. Also wide range of vegetarian dishes.

Hyper-Buddhist place and the ambiance is so good. On the first floor you can find the low bamboo chairs, traditional paintings, tea sessions, etc. Prices are reasonable, though I always end up ordering way too much. Many different choices in foods and especially different kinds of tea and they even also serve some beers.

Typical vegetarian restaurant for the Vietnamese/Buddhist visitors. A bit more expensive than others, but you can be completely sure there's no meat. I even think it's vegan. Small, but clean and the entrance is ever so stylish.

Nice vegetarian restaurant visited by Vietnamese and expats alike. Prices are reasonable, taste is good, staff is friendly and usually doesn't speak English, what more to say? I like to go there every once in a while.

This is a small clothing shop conveniently placed in an area frequented by expats, Xuan Dieu St, Tay Ho.It contains an assorted range of clothing, supposedly made for export, for men, women and children. It is quite similar to many of the Made in Vietnam shops seen in Hanoi, though maybe a bit smaller. The proprieter doesn't speak any English and they weren't able to give me a card or anything with their details on. Some interesting pieces currently on sale at the moment, however, including some nice men's long sleeve shirts in a large western XXL size, something I would think would be difficult to find in Hanoi (they told me 280,000vnd). Probably a handy shop for everyday wear-I picked up some shorts for my son, and worth a look if you are passing by and your family needs a few basics.

We went to Hideaway on a Saturday evening before going to the Opera House. We selected a lovely spot, right near the fish pond. Every so often the fountain would come on, and the frogs were croaking happily. Although outdoors there are plenty of fans. The menu contains many fresh options- I thought different from Van Mieu.
We opted for the nem platter, and two different salads, and my friend chose a savoury fish dish. Some of the signature juices are on the menu, however. There seems to be a lack of spot on salads in this town so these were a delightful surprise. The service was fine and we had no problems at all.
A really nice dining experience and one we are sure to repeat.

Smells soooo good in here. Especially just after the donuts come out of the oven. Lovely little corner bakery with everything from ice cream, cakes, cookies, dark and white chocolate truffles, little pizzas, and tarts to fresh baked breads dark to white. Caramelized cashews are awesome. This is right in the same vein as Nguyen Son Bakeries.

We studied with this school when we first arrived in Hanoi and while our teacher "Kevin" was charming, his ability to deliver lessons that were understandable and useful were challenged by his lack of English speaking ability, and the poor organization of the course structure. We were asked at the first session to pay an additional $30 each for a 10-15 page booklet filled with errors that was supposed to be a teaching aid. When we complained about the lack of quality to Hoa, she was unwilling to listen to our concerns. There are many other schools to choose from, give this one a miss!

When I first moved to Hanoi 3 years ago, Thuy was helpful in finding me a place to live. She was efficient, communicative, and quick. Shortly after moving into my house, it became evident that my landlord is lazy and cheap. Mold grew in several rooms and the landlord refused to either fix the problem or pay for me to fix it myself. Thuy intervened and although it was not an ideal situation, we worked through something mildly reasonable. These are the reasons I am giving her any stars at all.

Things changed when about a year ago I found out that she lied to a friend of mine regarding the rent in her house. My friend was paying $750/ month in rent each month. When she left Hanoi, she met with the landlord and said something about how reasonable she thought the rent was for such a nice house at only $750/ month. The landlord promptly corrected her and told her the rent was only $700/month. My friend, confused, asked how that could be, because she has been paying $750 this whole time. They realized that the entire 2 years, my friend had been paying $750 /month to Thuy at Homespec, who had in turn been giving the landlord only $700 of that amount. So Thuy had been deceiving both my friend and the landlord.

My respect for Thuy immediately dropped after this incident, and upon telling this story to several other people, I heard similar stories.

And just yesterday, as I began to pack up my own things in the house that Thuy helped me find, I suddenly heard the doorbell ring. It was Thuy, who wanted to show the house to someone right that minute. Poor man, who was standing right there -- if you are reading this, I'm sorry if I seemed brash. But the thing is, the movers are coming tomorrow and my house is in complete disarray, as is the case when you are moving. Thuy obviously doesn't understand how it is not only inconvenient, but also unprofessional of her to "drop in" without prior notice.

Go up, up, up the stairs to the tippy top floor and you will find a cozy little cafe with upholstered, mis-matched chairs and a few booths. All of this is within a few walls of exposed brick, which add atmosphere to this quirky cafe.

Mid-shopping, I stopped in by myself after having read positive reviews here. Sat down to lunch which was a watermelon juice and squid dish. Both arrived within minutes and were fresh and tasty. Squid was cooked perfectly (some places over cook it) and the veggies and rice it came with made for a generous and filling meal. And all for less than 100,000VND - definitely a good deal. Service was friendly, efficient, and polite and I give extra points to any cafe that has chili sauce and Tabasco already on the table.

One bonus of this place which I may explore next time is their extensive menu for the an chay(s) in your party. It looked like they had all kinds of meat substitutes and tofu, so props to Gecko Cafe for at least attempting to be creative.

Gecko also gets extra points for having a clean nha ve sinh, complete with a funny photo inside!

So, now I know that on a busy weekday (I arrived at 12:00), I can either join the Tay sandwich & salad conglomerate fighting for tables at Puku two doors down, or I can get delish VN food and western food (they have a list of sandwiches, pastas, and pizza) at Gecko where it's relaxed and cozy.

My only complaint is the cheesy '90s ballads that were playing while I dined, but seriously, the food was so good I didn't notice till I was on my way out back down the spiralling stairs... All in all, a great deal in a relaxed atmosphere.

Couldn't make this up if I tried:

1) Shortly after sitting down to eat, the manager began ripping into two of the waitresses, which eventually led to one of them crying right behind our table while the other waitresses consoled her.

2) Said manager then got on the phone and started gossiping to her friend, completely ignoring the customers and waitresses who were busy giving kleenex to the crying girl.

3) Food was marginal, the ramen contained exactly 1.0 pieces of pork and 1.0 eggs. Lots of noodles and broth though.

4) A waitress watched us eat, sometimes staring, for the entire meal.

5) Tried to charge $1 extra for the fried vegetables, and when we asked to see the menu again to verify the price, the waitress pointed to a random Japanese character on the "wall menu" which just so happened to be the original, incorrect price. Upon insistance to see the "real" menu, the waitress reluctantly agreed to give us the real price (although she still refused to let us see the menu.)

All in all, if you're in the mood for quality Japanese, go next door to Hannayuki (sp?) for a great experience and even better food.

If you're in the mood for watching a live soap opera over a marginal, over-priced lunch, then come on in!

One star for a lesson learnt.

Highland's Coffee is indeed a lower quality Starbucks rip off. Prices are absolutely absurd for vietnam (Coca cola is 2-5x higher than other places) and their coffee isn't actually that great.
The service is just.. Bleh is the best word i can come up with..

The only thing that's decent about this place is the location and setting.. However everytime i go there i see a family of rats running around the grounds which actually doesn't really surprise me.

I put off writing this review because I wanted to keep Nola all to myself. Never would have found it without TNH. I spend more time here than all other Hanoi spots combined. Great place to spend all day hanging out, reading, using WiFi, whatever. The parking in front is extremely limited, but you can park in the covered lot across the street and they will reimburse the expense.

Highly recommend for staying if you are into rodent, cockroach, fleas and bed bugs infestations.
But the greatest infestation is the smiling little profiteer of this dirty smelly little flophouse. This is the nasty little bugger Tue Hue, the self confessed retired mechanical engineer who has installed the dodgy taxi meters to the water and electrical supply so that you will pay, at the very least, ten times the correct rate. He will also arrange to rip you off for motor bike hire, taxi service and gas supply. The rental rate is also about three times you will pay at any guest house in the Old Quarter. I left two weeks before my contract was up as every insecticide bought would not kill the bed bugs. Have a nice stay.

Beautiful, newish hotel of the Swiss Movenpick chain. Great location for a quick stop-in of air-con in a lobby lounge off to the side. Tiny shop by reception for quick gifts or souvenirs. Upstairs is the new Mangosteen restaurant.
