If it wasn't for the NewHanoian I never would have found this great eye glasses place.
I went in this morning to get a free eye test and some new glasses and upon arrival was ushered to the front of the eye test line. I really don't like that kind of treatment and told the receptionist not to skip me ahead, but they insisted. Whatever.
The optometrist took her time with the eye test and fitted me with the kooky binocular glasses that they use to see if the lens are right. They sent me out into the store so everyone could have a good laugh at how ridiculous I looked (including other customers who were wearing the same contraption) and while I waited I picked out some fancy frames that cost just under a million dong. They were among the most expensive, but hey, they were lightweight and cute.
Once my prescription was ready, I told the girls which frames I wanted and 20 minutes later, I had my new glasses.
Easy, friendly and quick. Five stars.
They also have their own parking compound, which is useful now that the cops are pulling bikes off the sidewalks.

I had a really terrible breakfast here that cost over 300k. My boyfriend and I had the same thing and neither of us could eat most of what was on our plates -- cold and greasy is how I'd sum it up.
However, this isn't a breakfast place per se, so I'll be back soon for some tapas and hopefully I'll have a better experience.
I should add that the wait staff was extremely friendly and accommodating, and the dark, subdued tones of the upstairs were great for my hangover. We were also the only ones there.

Went back yesterday for my free one-month-later touch up, and he had done such an amazing job originally there was little to nothing for him to touch up.
If you're looking for an outstanding tattoo artist and high standards of cleanliness and care, give this guy a call!

Great selection of gummy candies too.

I ate here tonight and as per usual I was pleased with the food, service and general ambiance.
However, billing me at a rate of VND18,600 to the dollar when the official exchange is VND16,800 is bad business, plain and simple!!

Equal only to Au Lac Cafe when it comes to cranky service, I can't help but find myself eating here at least once every few weeks.
There's something about the frozen lemon, tall caramel lattes and sullen glares from the wait staff that typifies Hanoi for me. I also like to keep up with the trendy young Vietnamese who patronise this place, even if they do drive nicer motorbikes than I do.
And I also like the tuna sandwich, despite it's strange consistency.
It's a love-hate thing.

If you like chocolatey things and have $10-15 to burn, this is the place to go.
I had driven by it numerous times before it opened and was always curious what it would eventually become. Sex shop? Bakery? Lingerie store? They were all possibilities, considering the outside decor.
Once it opened a couple weekends ago, I managed to talk my partner into venturing inside. Love Chocolate Cafe specialises in chocolate everything (coffee, cakes, brownies, cookies, etc.) in a bizarre, 1950's style salon setting.
We LOVED the food -- the chocolate cake with cream cheese icing was out of this world, as was the brownie and the ice cafe mochas. This stuff is the real deal and neither of us could finish what we ordered. Too rich and delicious!
However, the decor inside leaves a lot to be desired and my boyfriend complained endlessly about the frilly chairs and curtains and pale green walls. Not to mention the god-awful paintings on the walls (with cutesy chocolate quotes) are an abomination onto god.
The music also made us want to rip our hair out, and we had to listen to it for a good 20 minutes while we waited for them to slap a couple pieces of cake on a plate.
In the end, our bill for dessert and coffee for two was equal to at least two or three regular meals anywhere else. This stuff is not cheap, but it sure is good. Maybe consider skipping dinner if you decide to eat here.
5 stars for food and coffee
3.5 stars for service
1 star for decor and music

After being burned with ultra high bills at SOS, I started going to the Vietnam-Korea Friendship Clinic a few years ago for any nagging health problems I had. They have two locations, but this one on Chu Van An is in my opinion the best.
In February they opened a brand-new hospital facility that the current clinic is located in. At reception you can choose between a Korean or Vietnamese doctor (both of whom are great) and the clinic has access to endoscopy machines, x-rays, blood work labs, etc.
Basically they've got the full hospital set up here at 12 Chu Van An, most of it funded by Korean NGOs.
A lot of people dislike the dual pricing system for foreigners and Viets, but in this case I don't mind. This is NOT a business but a charity clinic geared toward 'countryside' Vietnamese, according to the Korean administrator I spoke to. So, while as a foreigner I may pay $7 to see a doctor and get a script (cheap!!!), a Viet from Ha Tay or Hung Yen only pays $3.5. That's cool with me.
Four stars out of five. Minus one for the fact that people smoke endlessly in the hospital halls!!! Grrrr!!

I've had a number of dealings with the staff at the Canadian embassy, regularly registering my presence in the country and later getting a whole new passport.
I'm not impressed with the "Canadian network" and like Dratman, I don't receive emails about any events or get togethers. In fact, whenever I run into Paula, one of the head consular officials, she acts shocked that I'm still in the country.
When I was living in Bangkok, I got a text message from the Canadian embassy every time lightening struck it seemed, so why the staff here can't manage to disseminate information is beyond me, particularly with the recent outbreaks of cholera, bird flu, etc., etc.
That being said, they did issue me a new passport promptly and without too many problems. They're not the friendliest bunch, but considering the strained relations between Vietnam and Canada in the last decade, at least they are still around.
RIP Nguyen Thi Hiep!!!

This five star rating reflects my business dealings with Anh Wu that have lasted for over a year.
I met him back last summer when I was looking to rent a Super Cub (didn't find one, by the way). He hooked me up instead with a CHEAP, peppy Wave something or other, which ran great and he serviced, for free, every few months.
About 5 months ago, my partner bought a Bonus from Anh Wu, which runs like a dream and is in excellent condition. This bike is a beast and we love it. He's able to spot high quality parts and a solid engine, and has never lead us wrong.
Anh Wu can find you a fantastic and high quality bike and he can help you find the right (ie. honest) people to service it if he can't.
Not only is he helpful, he's a total sweetheart and a genuinely great guy.
I can't wait to go on one of his offroad tours!
