Anyone know of any hotels in Hanoi that are clean, relatively quiet, have rooms with real windows (not facing brick walls, etc.), under $20 (preferably under $17), in the old quarter or centrally located?
Anyone know of a place in Hanoi where I can buy a Honda GL (this is the bike you see all the farmers riding in the mts)? Wimpy city bikes are easy to find, but I want something with a little more pep (but not the expense). Not to mention that no self-respecting VN Hanoian would want to steal it. I've never actually seen one of these bikes on the city streets and I've yet to see one in a motorbike shop either.

In my experience they will make you pay the tax. To get around the taxes you need to ship your things with-in 30 days of your arrival (doesn't need be your original arrival) to VN. And, make sure that the sender name is exactly the same as the receiver name. Even if the family name is the same but the first name is different they will tax you. It seems that everything is taxed at different rates so the process can take sometime. One way to avoid paying so much is to put some medicine in the package and claim that it is expensive. Medicine is non-taxable so if you do an itemization you can fudge things a little.

If your headed out of town I'd take it but I wouldn't ever give my passport over to a hotel. I've heard too many horror stories about hotels losing passports or holding passports for ransome. In 2.5 yrs I've yet to encounter a place that said no to a photocopy.
In response to the question: Sylly question ; ) Do you guys carry your passport everywhere you go in Hanoi/Vietnam be it during work/holiday? Just curious...guys...
