    Dear hinotori,

This might be a little lengthy and forgive me if my "engrish" might not be up to par. Here it goes. But get yourself a pen and paper to make it easier to remember.

    Possible Problem

    1. Both your d-link & linksys share a common link. They're both routers.

Here is what you might want to add to your checklist.

    Part 1

    a. Check if you can connect to the internet purely by plugging in your mac to the lan port first.

    b. If the answer is yes, then access your d-link configuration and check the ip adress. it should be 192.168.1.1 or something similar. Make sure the dhcp server is enabled and that's all for this part.

    c. If it is, then half your problem is solved.

    d. Remember your modem setup ip address.

    e. Unplug your mac from the modem and proceed to Part 2

    Part 2

    a. Plug in your mac using your lan port to your linksys router.

    b. Acess the linksys web-configuration via manual which should be 192.168.1.1 or something similar.

    c. Disable your wan connection type on the main page. Do not select pppoe or anything else. Just disable it. Save your changes. Give it a minute as the router will reboot and you'll have to log on again.

    d. Change your ip adress to something else than your modem ip. i.e if your modem is 192.168.1.1 then set your linksys to 192.168.1.254. Set your subnet mask to 255.255.255.0 and your Gateway to 192.168.1.1.( your d-link ip adress ). Disable your DHCP server as your modem is now your router, your linksys is purely an acess point from now on.

Save your changes and it will be another minute or so for changes to be saved. This time around, access your router to the same address as you have keyed in which is 192.168.1.254.

    e. Try to access your linksys wireless with the new ip which is 192.168.1.254. Double check your settings to ensure that the items stated above is correctly entered.

    f. Check your wireless tab and make sure your linksys wireless is enabled.

    g. Don't worry about wireless security as of time being. Most important of all. It's the basic settings you need to get right.

    h. If the settings are correct. Remove Proceed to part 3

    Part 3

    a. Now unplug your mac from the linksys.

    b. with the same cable, connect your d-link modems lan port ( 1-4 ) to the linksys lan port. Remember it's lan to lan. Do not connect your cable from your lan to wan or vice-versa. ( i.e d-link port no 2 to linksys port no 2 ).

    c. Select your airport on your mac to connect to your linksys wireless. If it's connected then proceed to part 4.

    Part 4.

    a. Go to your apple System preferences, ( Click on the apple logo on the top left corner and you can see System Preferences )

    b. Click on Network and proceed to your airport. It should be green and " connected ". Then click on advance and the tcpip tab. Your iPv4 Adress should be 192.168.1.XXX. Subnet mask will be 255.255.255.0.And your Router tab should be 192.168.1.1 ( which is your d-link ). IpV6 should be on auto and grayed out.

    c. Open your browser and just go to any site. i,e www.google.com and keep your fingers crossed. You should be able to surf.

    d. Then proceed to Part 5.

    Part 5.

    a. Now it would be safe to change your wireless security settings. Access your linksys via 192.168.1.254 and you should be able to change your security settings that suits your need. I would recommend WPA Personal / Tkip / so you can key in your password to secure it from other people leaching on your dsl line.

    b. Save your settings and now you can surf in peace.

    c. Go to part 6

    Part 6.

    a. If it was successful, buy me a beer

    b. If it isn't, Damm.. Let me know which part went wrong and i'll try to help you out.

    Cheers

Of course there are other ways to solve this issue but I have found that in most cases, this is the best solution as most isp's in vietnam uses pppoe rfc 256 which in some cases not supported by some version of routers. Thus disabling the router function on your modem might not work.

This is a follow up on last weeks discussion. I am planning to organize a meet-up on this Thursday ( 3/6/08) around 8pm just to get to know each other and discuss further on setting up TNH's very first MUG.

Bring your mac & friends along and join us for dinner. Share experiences, tips, tricks or knowledge on that day.

I've got the management's approval for free food and the first 2 beers to be on the house that night.

    Day : Thursday

    Time : 8 pm

Venue : Loft Bar & Restaurant. 143 Ba Trieu Street

Let me know on how many people is going to attend so that I can prepare in advance.

    Cheers

    Good Day,

The last time I got dental floss was in Big C and it's pretty far away from central Hanoi. However, you might want to try looking for it inone of the supermarkets inside Vincom towers.

    Hope this helps

    Dear Cat1,

You might want to try some self diagnostics on your side before sending it in for repairs.

Here is a few questions or steps that you might want to try and ask yourself.

    1. Have you done a firmware upgrade via iTunes ?

    2. Does your ipod freeze on random occasions or while doing something specific ?

    Cheers

    Update 1.

Dropped by the shop and as what Mike said on his post, the shop isn't flashy but they are one of the few retailers that seems to know what they're doing.

The lady which attended to me speaks a little English but good enough to understand what I was talking about and took in my powerbook. They are also detailed enough to write down various serial numbers of my mac for tracking. She even asked me if I wanted to have my hard disk drive's serial to be recorded as well.

Knowing that opening the 12" powerbook just for the hard disk drive's serial would take a long time. I simply declined as I would trust Mike's recommendation.

For now, it's just fingers crossed in hopes it won't cost me a fortune to repair.

I'll follow up on this post later.
