about the event: Hanoi International Music Festival # 2 by Club for Arts and Music Appreciation (C.A.M.A.) @ American Club
I hide behind no pseudonym and couldnt give a toss what CAMA or the Minskclub crew think of this post.
This continuous outpricing of the locals (youth) who would of loved to attend it but could definitely not afford to is just shocking. I had heaps of my Viet friends show great interest until they heard the price. It just seems that these kind of events are quickly becoming 'only for the rich/ or only for Westerners'
The music in the CAMA tent lacked diversity in music, seriously CAMA lads, the murmurs have started and conversations overheard today go something like this ' I remember ONE or maybe 2 parties that CAMA organised that were good' Get some new Guests/DJs, break free from the clique.
I speak only for myself, but I will be boycotting all future events associated with either the Minskclub or Cama until regain the respect they ONCE had.

Oregano has become well known for their sandwiches, which are superb. However today I ordered one of the chicken dishes. It was exquisite, tender-off the bone and the sauce was tasty. I give Oregano 5 because of the quality of food, speedy delivery and amazing friendly service.

First things first - this is not the place for those with a tight budget, however the style of the restaurant and presentation of the food is second to none. The concept is unique, all food is served vertically- with the idea that each 'segment' gets eaten sequentially to enhance the palette."

It gets 3 stars based solely on the decor and attentive staff. However the chef needs a wake-up call, beef was tough, salmon-passionfruit dish had only the latter flavour.

Something fresh for hanoians! Great spot to chill out. Highly recommend the cocktails.

I think agents advertising apartments for $650 per month in places like Thang Long International Village, must be taking the mickey! I went to see these apartments for a friend and honestly is not worth even $400. Its cheaper to rent a house on Phuket Island in Thailand...go figure.

Ello from the north, just wanted to see if any of you know of a place in Saigon that sells dj equipment.
Was wondering if anyone here has used a Vietnamese removal company? I have had a look at Crown and JVK, but the prices way too high for us modest earners. I have used Taxi Thai before, but seems that they only supply the transport and you have to carry everything yourself.
I am wondering if Tom/Elliot could allow users to review properties they have seen and agents they have dealt with. Quite a few people I work for have gone to advertised (on Newhanoian) places and all of the sudden the prices change etc etc.

Depending on what card you are looking for. If its international calls you want to make via the net (ADSL of course) then buy the SNET card.

The best way to check for leached electricity is to switch off your mains. Check if the meter still runs.
If it does call Hanoi Power Company or Electric Vietnam and they will investigate.

Yes you need a police clearance (like most countries) for a work-permit. The application must come from a company. You as a citizen of a country are allowed to request a police clearance, I really dont see why you should have a letter of request from a company or organisation. In addition to a police clearance from your country you will also need a local police clearance, evidence that you have paid tax and a medical clearance. I think its a great idea, keeps the riff raff out of this country.

Keep checking here on Newhanoian, when you arrive you can have a look at Le Pub, Western Canned Foods or use one of many agents. Rental is expensive in Hanoi (compared to the rest of Asia)

No not impossible! Just keeping the riff raff out of this country before it becomes a 2nd Thailand.
What you need to work in Vietnam legally
1. A degree (ESSENTIAL)
2. Police clearance certificate from your country
3. Proof that you are registered paying tax
4. Local Vietnamese police clearance
5. Medical certificate.
In other words if you are educated and not a criminal you can get a work-permit. I support this stance completely.

I am sure that there are exceptions and perhaps in the catering industry different laws apply. My mate is a head chef and has a work-permit, not a business visa. Still I think that if the hotel covers its basis you are safe.

If you have a Bachelors in Education, it should not be too much of a hassle. However if you have any other degree you will be better off doing the CELTA teaching course. Most schools (the good ones) require this as a bear minimum.

Far enough Alpha, however this is what I do not get

I have seen houses not get occupancy for well over a year for the sake of $50, and perhaps this is an exception. Still $6000 per year on rental is nothing to sneeze at considering the cost of living.

You will more than likely need a CELTA and if you are not a native English speaker and want to land the good deals you will need an IELTS score of 8 (or TOEFL equivalent)

Hey Nick,
You can still work whilst waiting for your work-permit, contact the British Embassy about the police clearance and remember you will need a health check. Do not get the health check till after you have got the criminal clearance as the health check is only valid for 6 months. You will also need to have your degree verified/endorsed or notarised, but most of the time your embassy can assist in this. You will then need to get a local police clearance certificate (from your landlord) and finally *this is recent* a tax number. Hope this helps.

The other brands besides Delonghi tend to be quite noisy buggers, we have A Delonghi and it works like champ! DVD players however I am really not too sure of, perhaps one of the bigger names like Sony/LG would be better than California :-)

There are 2 possible solutions, one as Ouriel has pointed out is to repaint, you can readily find Anti-fungus paint which should be used as the primer. Other 'remedies' would be to use vinegar (which stinks), lemon juice (which turns out to be expensive) and finally bleach (which stains)
We tried everything above, including painting, but the mould just kept growing in beautiful white tufts of fur, I eventually just took to daily burning of the fur in the hope that it would dry out the wall. Our best solution thus far has been the use of a dehumidifier (20 litres in a matter of hours)

Ill second Alexis' advicem, HIS and UNIS are the onl;y two I would recommend for English speaking children. Best to pay both of them a visit and check the distance to school, though both I think provide transport services.

Ill second Gunkstas comment, depending on what you earn (work-permit an absolute must) and the tax arrangement with your employer, tax rebates are possible. It requires a bit of paperwork from your employer and of course Human Resource knowledge.

Make sure you get everything in writing, make sure the contract in English and Vietnamese say the same thing. Arrange if possible to be paid in USD, you'll save yourself a lot of worry.

I'm with Jimbo on this one... a quick survey amongst 15 expats in my office and not one of them have been done in with a deposit. I have been here 3 years and have moved around the city a few times and also had no issues. Just make sure you get some form of proof (wriiten and signed) that you have paid the deposit.
