Wanna second what Steve said. Their customer service is awesome. We usually order in for lunch and the lady takes the order in excellent English - she even remembers you if you call in often enough (embarassed to admit she does remember me!), They even deliver it by a specified time, and according to your personal preferences. The food is always neatly wrapped with utensils, if needed.

As residents of Ciputra for the last 2 years, we have relied on them to feed our kids on a few times a week as we usually arrive home late from work (I know - poor excuse!), but Jafa makes things so convenient, as they have a reliable kid friendly menu! Their service is always prompt and with a smile. I trust Jafa with food preparation & ingredients so I have relied on them faithfully, until yesterday when upon my kids' insistence, when I arrived home at almost 7pm, to have Bun Cha. Now, I know I could have paid MUCH less had I taken them to eat on the street, but I really don't want my kids getting sick. So, I ordered from Jafa and with the new price hikes, I got a bill for 2 servings of locally MADE & locally PURCHASED ingredients for over $15!!!! In addition, I'm sure this dish was not prepared by a expat using Sirloin steak imported from Australia or the US, so I wonder why Jafa has chosen to increase the price of such dishes to where it may be deemed ridiculous! Nevertheless, my kids enjoyed the meal, my pocket did not.

FYI Gloria Jean's has moved out of Vincom. I liked their friendly service and while their drinks were pricey, they had a nice variety and ya paid for a great cup of wateva you ordered!

We love this place!
They have a nice variety on the menu of western and asian dishes. The portions are more than adequate and the presentation of the food is really tasteful. All the dishes we ordered were prepared with fresh ingredients. In addition, the price is extremely reasonable, considering the location and the quality of the food.
The staff is really efficient and a few speak English. The food is always brought quickly to the table according to your specified preference.
Their drinks menu is really good as well. They have a wide variety of Italian sodas and summer drinks including smoothies and shakes.
I've heard that they have live music at night, but have yet to go there for dinner.

So, this has been our only option for medical treatment for the last three years (insurance requires us to go here). While we have enjoyed the luxury of efficient staff, competent nurses and awesome doctors, I have chosen not to give it 5 stars for one reason - outsourcing! Yep, SOS "outsources" certain tests, eg. CT scans to the local hospital. This means the patient gets the test done at the hospital, is transported there and back in an SOS ambulance and returns with the test results. However, SOS charges you FOUR times the cost that the hospital charges. So, if I had gone to the hospital on my own I would have paid X,000 VND but SOS charged me 4X,000 VND. And this is JUST for the test. I was charged more for the ambulance service, chauffeur, and for an onsight radiologist to read the result! When I asked why I was charged four times more for the test, I was told that it was the hospital that charges them four times more as they have a different rate for expats! Anyway, even though I did not have to pay this out of my pocket, I empathize for those individuals who have their blood work, xrays, ultra sounds, etc done at SOS and pay exorbitant rates when they could go to a local clinic privately and get it done. Bring the results to SOS and have an expat doctor interpret them!

Depends on who your landlord is with regards to maintenance. It's quiet and safe for kids to run around and play or ride their bikes. I recommend it for anyone who has kids. If you don't have a motorbike, and plan on taking taxi's everywhere, then it ends up being expensive. Shopping is no problem. There are several wet markets just outside the gates as well as Minimarts close by that deliver. L's Place caters to the more expensive palate but is within walking distance for your everyday needs. There is a swimming pool and tennis court - have to pay for this service. It is always clean. This is VN so neighbors tend to be nosey but this is expected! Close to KinderWorld and UNIS.

Not sure if my calculations are correct. You wanna get $1000 USD and sell it on the street for 17.000 VND to the dollar which should give you 17 000 000 VND. Then you gonna go to the bank and try to deposit your VND into the US account at the rate of 16.2000 to the dollar.
So basically you gonna end up with around $1050. Over and above all the points brought up above regarding the issues banks have with converting VND to USD, is it worth all that trouble for $50?
Maybe my calculations are wrong or I'm missing something!

I purposely chose a house that is hit directly by sunlight and I leave the curtains/blinds and windows open as much as possible. I still find patches of mold here and there ... behind wall hangings and such. The only way to really fix this would be for the plaster to be removed and then resealed using special paint and sealer but I guess home owners here do not see it as a huge issue and merely paint over it. If it is a concern for you, use a weak solution of bleach and water and wipe. Good luck!
In response to the question: I have major issues with mould. I don't like it, it doesn't like me (I can tell); basically we don't co-exist happily. I have just moved into a h...

To the best of my knowledge there is no authorized Apple dealer here. Wouldn't try to repair an iPod here cos if they replace with inferior parts, a genuine iPod dealer may refuse to repair in the future. In addition, every iPod has a service log for future reference and if you repair at a non authorized dealer this may influence future repairs as well. You can contact your home country and consider shipping it there to someone who can help you send it in. Depending on how old it is, Apple offers 12 months free repair service. Good luck!

I would include housing in my contract as mentioned above. If your company agrees, and a serviced apartment is within their budget then I highly recommend this option. I also recommend going the same route with transport. If it is within the company budget, ask for a car with driver to be provided or for taxi allowance to be included in your contract. I'm not sure how big your company is but I'm sure they can swing the above mentioned for your peace of mind and safety if it is within their budget. Wish you everything of the best!

Our son grew up here (was born in Thailand though) and so we have a lot of experience living here.
Medical - I was only allowed to go to SOS (insurance reasons) so I can't comment on the French Hospital with kids but SOS was able to give our kids most of their shots here. We went to Thailand for the shots that are not available here but needed for attendance to schools in the US. SOS staff is pretty competent but there is no resident paediatrician so you will have to just take whoever is available - depending on who you get it ain't bad. I usually go for the Australian or Belgian doctors as they are professional and competent. I have had bad experiences with the VN doctors at SOS. I only purchase over the counter meds from SOS as purchasing from outside pharmacies was not an option for me - too afraid that the meds were not genuine and wasn't going to take a chance anyway. Even though our insurance covers us 100%, for someone with no insurance, SOS is pretty pricey.
Baby food is available here - cereals are pretty good eg. Nestle rice, barley, wheat, oats. The jars of baby food tend to be expensive as well. If you are competent in the kitchen, I would buy fresh fruit and veg and make my own! Personally, I prefered to peel all fruit. If you get a nanny here, she will make awesome congee for your baby - mixture of rice porridge with meat and veg.
Citimart in Vincom Towers now stocks some Fisher Price toys. There are more for babies than older kids so you're in luck there! The clothes here are not too bad, but I found the quality to be not as good as the items in the States. But, as your baby will be growing fast maybe you don't care if it gets raggedy after a few washes. You could just get a tailor to make some special items if you like.
I am a protective mother and after seeing lots of bad accidents involving kids here, I didn't let my kids get on a motorbike at all. As a result getting around tends to be a little more expensive. We lived in Ciputra which I felt was a suitable place for our kids. We had a clear sidewalk to push our stroller unlike the rest of the city. There are numerous playgrounds there and lots of baby groups.
Well, I wish you everything of the best with your move to Hanoi with your baby. Feel free to PM me if you want more specific information. ;)

I personally wouldn't waste my money on a stroller here ... even though they are cheap, the quality is poor and they plastic they are made of may not be safe for baby. You can carry it on the plane at no extra cost - they store it in the cabin for you.

I've seen the extensions they do here. Not sure what kind you are looking for. If you want a weave, it ain't gonna happen! They use human hair, and attach each cluster of hair (which has a wire base) to the base of your hair using pliers. It is a tedious process - I have never seen something like this before, so to me it's pretty funny. Anyway, after they attach it I'm sure you can ask them to dye it to match your hair color. I've seen the clusters of hair in many VN salons. You can try Hien's on Yen Phu as I've watched them do it there.
In response to the question: Am interested in finding out more about hair extensions. I have wavy/curly brown hair and am not sure places would have a match for me. Any info on pl...
