Great party thrown by Tempest and it was wonderful to meet you all. It was nice to have everyone show their work and talk it over. Looking forward to the next meet up. For those who have shown interest in my class, I have to postpone setting it up for now as I picked up an assignment in Africa and will be gone for 3 weeks in July.
Justin
It was really great meeting you all, and the party was perfect TSC, the food, the cold beer, the photo discussion etc... can't ask for more really ... except a few hot models be ready for us to take a few practice shots :)). Really, thanks a lot for having us TSC and will def coming for the next one.
Hi folks, as promised, here are the details about the upcoming Portrait Photography Workshop. Hope to see you there.
Portrait Photography Workshop
Outdoor... Indoor... People looking fabulous
What distinguished a happy snap from a great portrait, often comes down to the way a photographer uses available light.
Over two days, we will focus on making the most of your environment to create fabulous portraits.
On the first day, we will got out into the 'wilds' of Hanoi's parks and explore ourtdoor portraiture in the morning and follow up with some production and post processing tips at Tadioto.
On the second day, we'll head indoors and explore how to make the most of what's on hand followed by some time in a photographic studio exploring how to make the most of a single light source.
Coordinated by Tsc Tempest Photography and with the aid of three beautiful models, lead photographers, Dave Lemke and NaSon Nguyen will show you all their best tips for creating enduring portrait memories.
Places have been limited to a maximum of 15 participants so that all participants can make the most of the models on hand.
This is a high quality oportunity to shoot with some great photographers and models, and get some seriously constructive feedback.
Book early to confirm your place.
Prices:
$50.00 (USD) per day per person
Or
$80.00 (USD) for both days*
To confirm your attendance, a non-refundable $10.00 (USD) payment must be made in advance. Bookings close when all places have been filled for both days or 3 days prior, whichever comes first.
*This 20% discount is only available for full payment in advance only.
I've just been looking through some of the photos in the group - there are some great photos uploaded here.
I know not every one uses the flickr group so I thought I'd post a few good ones (in my opinion) in this thread. Feel free to join in and post some of your favourites (yours or someone elses).
you're probably wonderig about the venu, in a minor way. Let me give you a tour.
My place has under cover bbq, so rain or shine, it's a nice cook-out space.
My studio is located on the ground floor - if anyone would like to play with or explore using a studio then it's open and FREE to group members.
I have a number of outside tables so it's possible to view notebook computers laden with images and for various people to give their considered opinion on your images.
In the past, this has worked out really well. It's been interesting and constructive.
For those new to photography it's been instructional, for those well versed, it's been grounding.
Everyone gets a benefit, for some it's foodd, for other's it's technique.
again this event is at the same time with Zoom-Zooms trip.
Sorry, but I'd rather go outside and have some practice in outdoor shooting at nice location.....
Obviously it would be better to arrange on another date but this looked like the only possible time in June, at the time. There are always going to be clashes between group events.
I asked for ideas and suggestions from members a few weeks ago, but got almost no response, so that makes it a bit tricky.
not to put too fine a point on it, but if you go back through the threads, we've been making the "last weekend of the month" a regular meeting arangement.
It's by no means a confirmed practice, but it does have precedence.
Perhaps ZOOM ZOOM, with it's "frequent" activities, could keep that in mind when planning it's own activities.
I believe that the Photography Club has always been mindful of other activities that might clash, when it plans an event.
It'd be nice to see other groups do the same thing.
Lately, I've been watching Dean Collins on Lighting various situations - very, very informative and highly recomend it.
One of the tips I want ot shar with you is the loading of 35mm film.
Now, I've always loaded the canister into it's mounting bracket firts, and then extended the film to the take-up spool, closed the back and, "Bob's your Aunty's new live-in lover..."
Watching this program, I noticed that they threaded the take-up spool first and then put the canister into it's holding space. Talk about a reversal of paradigm!
Which is more efficient? I don't know yet, but I suspect that this "Collin's" method results in less misfeeds.
Just thought I'd share.

As suggested at the May meet a couple of weeks ago, June's meet up will be a social one, rather than a photo trip out of the city.
It would be great to get as many members of the group together as possible and share ideas, critique photos, and possibly plan some more meets for the coming months.
A venue is yet to be decided, but I think we'll be looking at Saturday 27th June in the late afternoon/evening.
Anyone with suggestions please post them here or let me know.
In recent times it seems like we've been meeting up the last weekend of the month, more or less. So I suggest the same time frame. In this case it would be Apr. 30/31.
It would be nice if we could travel, but given the shortness of notice, might have to be something local.
An interesting option would be to do a photo essay focussed on one thing, perhaps, for example, sewing machines, or cooking pots, etc.
Thematic photography can also give us a focus for creating good images, as well as the usuall, 'go for a wander and shoot the streets'... type approach.
It's the mock-up of old Vietnamese village which created by the painter Thành Chương and has recognized as being the focus of old Vietnam culture color with plenty of architectural community and various nuance of many areas in the North. The Phu Thanh Chuong is located in Hien Ninh, Soc Son, Hanoi (the countryside) and you can go there by mortobike. More infomation is on the below sites (and it's in Vietnamese):
I want to store my photos and videos online without boring old ftp.
I'd prefer something like Picasa, Flickr etc but I want to upload eps files and Olympus RAW (orf) so I need a lot of gigs.
Any advice?
Also, I'd like see some of the groups pics and also put my own favourites up on show. Is there are group account or something on one of the photo sites?
As far as online storage goes, I don't know of anywhere that stores and lets you view RAW images. I use flickr for my images but store all of my RAW files and scans on a 1TB hard drive.
To give you an idea, this is the kind of facility I am talking about but the entry price for this one is around $1,000.
I was hoping there would be something far cheaper offering the same kind of backup service.
I have all my images on a portable hard drive with intermittent backups to DVD. My needs are basic at the moment, but I hope later that might change where photographers, post-production and printers may be located in different parts of the world but need to access the same file.
I don't know if it handles RAW files for viewing but you could perhaps set up gallery2 on dreamhost. Gallery2 is a pretty capable photo gallery program, and dreamhost gives you tons of storage (I have ~300GB for $7 / month).
Check out Photoshelter, they are a great company but the fee is around $350 a year. I'm not sure what level you are but it's geared more towards professionals.
you missed out on the grand unveiling of Will's new toy!
Suffice to say it was interesting walking around a place, ike the zoo, with it's crowds, looking for long exposure oportunities.
I tried a few random, "street photogaphy" type shots [3200 iso, canon eod 50d, 1/8th sec) but i wasn't really happy with the results. I'll post a few when I get back fom HK & China, as well as some developed b&w pinhole images from my recent trip to Aus if there are any good ones...
As TSC suggested before, we should meet up and have a get together, even if we don;t all pinhole!
I can lend a hand if anyone wants to make a pinhole camera, or a pinhole body cap for their SLR. I'll also bring my efforts along and share them. Of course, non-pinhole cameras would be allowed too!
Anyone with suggestions as to where we should meet?
I'm still up for Pinhole Day. As an addes bons, any pics we take on the day can aslo be shared on the Pinhole Website and can become a part of the glorious history of this particular event. :-p
Did you upload your pinhole pictures somewhere? Or can we search yours on the official site (which nicknames? the country Vietnam is not listed anyway).
How about the zoo and the surrounding area? meetup around 9:30 for coffee aiming to stroll away by ten?
I'll be busy between 1pm and 4 pm hopefully shooting some portraits, but nothing's fixed at this stage, and rounding out the day with some Sunset/Twilight shots across West Lake. I'm thinking Tay Ho Pagoda could be a good backdrop for sunsets.
Another possibility for day's end, is the Amusement Park followed by Bia Hoi Sundowners on Au Co, next to the Red River, between the Ciputra Turnoff and the bridge leading to the airport.
I'm happy to meet anywhere. I like TSC's suggestion of the Zoo/Park, I haven't bee there for a while.
I'm off to HK tomorrow morning until Saturday, so maybe the group can agree a meeting time in my absence, and I'll meet you all whenever and wherever you decide.
Hi all
I was wondering that how many of you who care about Camera Lens.
I own a DSLR, but sometime I still want to use MF Lens.
Last week, I bought a Takumar Bayonet 135mm/2.8 (M42 Lens, with adapter for nikon). I'm trying to control this lens, but 2/3 of my photos are still out of focus.
I only know Will and Aaron use 35mm film camera and own some MF Lens. Is there any member use MF Lens? Maybe we could share some experiences next meet up or here.
I'll be happy to take a look at it with you. Though I should admit that for a photographer I know strikingly little about equipment (and some would say photography, for that matter).
I occasionally use Rikenon (Pentax K mount) and Pantax (M42 mount) lenses on my Canon EOS cameras. I have manual adapters for both these lens types and use the lenses in fully manual mode.
Focusing is done manually, as is shutter setting shutter speed. As a result, the effective sharpness of an image depends on the urgency; brightness of the camera's focusing screen; if you have or don't have a split prism to assist focusing; the aperture of the lens at time of focusing; and, camera support.
If I have plenty of time and plenty of light, it works well, otherwise its a bit hit and miss.
I should add, that with a fixed focal length (prime) tele lens, DoF is pretty short, so tweaking the focus is often a case of very fine nudges of th focusing ring - I have a Fujinon T f/4.5, 200mm telephoto M42 mount lens: it's dark and very sensitive to small adjustments in focus, you really gotta finesse it to get it to work well.
Oh yeah, thanks Aaron and TSC
I use the lenses in fully manual mode. ISO & Shutter Speed I adjust on body, F I adjust on the Lens, but the problem with my camera, unfortunately, is it does not support for AF (Manual Lenses). Follow your advice, I should buy an AF-Confirm.
As far as I know, only Canon has AF-Confirm inside the body, but nikon doesn't, does it?
I have uploaded a photo on our flickr. I shot with Takumar 135mm. I really like the color made by this MF Lens.
strange... the last three days I can surf just about everywhere else, but Flickr takes forever and a day to load - more often than not, not load at all. :-(
just back from Australia. I've seen some of the pics from tthe last meetup and they look great, seems like you had lots of fun.
Just wanted to get this in, for planning purposes - April 26 (last sunday of the month) is Worldwide Pinhole Camera Day, and I thought that might be a good excuse for some of us to get together and create an event.
Dear members
I'm planning to travel NaTrang area.
But I am very busy for looking travel agency.
If you know good travel agency or if you have good experience of traveling NaTrang, Let me know the agency or give me tip for my trip.
After the trip, i will up-load my picture promise.
if u have a yahoo account, u can log on to www.flickr.com and upload ur pics. thereafter u can put all the pics u want in the "hanoi photography" group pool. just search for it. easy to find. flickr is pretty cool. u'll love it.
u can upload 100 mb of pics in a month and 2 videos.
Hey does anyone in the group have any idea where I can get large prints made (like A2 size, or 16x20in or whatever that is in cm) and preferably mounted on wood? I'm in a bit of a spot and don't really have the time (or money) to test out a bunch of random places. Thanks!
Arrangements have now been made for the trip this weekend.
The minibus will leave from the Opera House at 8am, and make one more stop at METRO to pick up people who live in the far west of the city. The we'll head north to Tam Dao!
It takes about 2 hours, so we should be there by mid-morning.
Accommodation has been booked - we are staying at the Sao Mai Hotel.
The final list of people on the trip is below, please contact me if you are not on the list and want to be, or if you are on the list and are not coming.
I am very lucky to find out this group. I love photo much. I would like to take part in any trip at weekend for photo.

welcome to the group. As Will mentioned earlier, there's a weekend trip away at the end of the month. click on the Event's Link and Click "I'm Attending" if you'd like to go along.
Unfortunately, I probably won't be able to commit in time for the weekend trip this month, as I'm still waiting to hear about work on those days. I hope everyone has a good time; it was nice meeting the lot of you last month and I look forward to doing it again soon.
February Meetup was fun and it was great to meet so many new faces - a very successful event! Well done, Will.
The March event looks to be a fantastic oportunity to go away for an "over nighter" enjoying the countryside. Unfortunatly, for me, I won't be able to attend as I will be shooting in Australia, at the time :-D
If you're uncertain what to photograph, think of the following: if you can get to a peak, sunrise, sunset, macro studies of dew drops, and little beasties, local lifestyles and curbside vendors steaming awy in the early morning, anything else that catches your eye.
Keep in mind you might want to compensate for backlight exposure due to low contrast lighting, you may also want to play with enhancing the colour, vivid picture styles for digital, and polariser/tripod or greenfield filter for colour film, yellow/orange filter for you b&&w film folks. Don't forget your UV/Haze or Skylight filter these also help.
Had a lovely photographing day with you all, on last saturday's meet up. Will, thanks for arranging things! It was nice meeting you all, maybe see you on a next occasion.
I'm wondering if it would be possible to share and maybe comment on each others shots, to get some feed back and learn ...
Is there a place where members could upload, let's say, 2, 3 or 4 of their favorite shot's of the day?
Hey everyone! Good to meet you all last time:) i am wondering when the next even will take place, cant find it on the site.. i probably wont be able to attend since my mom is coming to visit from the 23rd til the 4th.. :(
Sure, I have seen the event.
I hope I could attend and meet you on next Saturday.
Btw: how can I Identify another members, because Van Mieu is big and crowded.
The meet-up will take place on Saturday 28th February.
A few people have mentioned that they'd like a meet-up in Hanoi, rather than go out of the city this time.
A meet up at the Temple of Literature (Van Mieu) was suggested, followed by some wandering around the streets looking for street photography opportunities (of which there are usually plenty!).
Anyone have any opinions about this idea? Or anyone got any alternative suggestions?
I thought it would be nice if we could do something along these lines and then go for lunch/dinner somewhere and compare / critique each others photos.
Yeah, the back streets near the Temple of Literature are very cool and quite surprising with their twists and turns.
There's a railway line through the area, lots of quaint sewing machine shops and roadside markets, small restaurants, small community pagodas, and the like.
Another possibility is to swarm the Truc Bach Lake region - again, some interesting sights and oportunities. At the risk of resurecting an old thread, I'm interested in what's left of the Ngu Xa Bronze Casting Village that's supposed to be near the lake. Lots of strange (perhaps) little eateries, swan boats, the oldest pagoda in Hanoi, floating restaurants and a bronze casting village that may no longer be there.
Oops... just realized that you're looking at March already. We have meetups once a month. The location and times can be proposed by anyone. It usually takes a week or two to get the details ironed out. They'll get posted here a week or so before the meetup. Cheers...
Update
Please note the new date for the Portrait Photography Workshop.
It is now scheduled for July 18-19.
Justin
Good luck in Africa, hope you have a great time of it.
Yeah, great time yesterday, and great to meet all of you. Just about recovered from my crushing hangover now...
Thanks for the helpful suggestions and critique Justin.

**JUNE MEET**
Hi folks,
As suggested at the May meet a couple of weeks ago, June's meet up will be a social one, rather than a photo trip out of the city.
Hello,
nice idea indeed.
But how do you think this "critique photos" is going to work?
Should everybody bring prints?
For instance I do not have ones.
Well , prints would be ok, laptops could also be used for this purpose if people want to bring them.
Once we get some ideas for a venue we could get this worked out.
Does anyone have access to a data projector?

hi...perhaps a pre-expedition meet at some venue?
Hi all,
What do you think about a trip to Phủ Thành Chương this Sunday, check below link for its pictures:

Hello,
nice place indeed (I visited it last Sunday).
But, sorry, I voted for Zoom Zoom's bike-away......
The village sounds good. Unfortunately, I'm already all booked up for this Sunday, perhaps laer in the month? Last Weekend of the Month?
Agree, last week of May is better
Yeah, I reckon that's a great idea che_che. Last weekend of the month then.
I'll send an email out to the group to see who's interested (at some point this weekend).
I'll arrange some transport too, for those who don't want to motorbike there.

I'll be busy between 1pm and 4 pm hopefully shooting some portraits, but nothing's fixed at this stage, and rounding out the day with some Sunset/Twilight shots across West Lake. I'm thinking Tay Ho Pagoda could be a good backdrop for sunsets.
Another possibility for day's end, is the Amusement Park followed by Bia Hoi Sundowners on Au Co, next to the Red River, between the Ciputra Turnoff and the bridge leading to the airport.
are we talking about sat or sun?
We're talking about Sunday.
I don't have a pinhole camera but I'll attend.
See you on sunday.
..... but where :D
See you Sunday!
Ok folks, unless there are some major objections, lets meet at the entrance to the Zoo, Sunday morning at 9:30am
I have two pinhole bodycaps: 1 x M42 mount; 1 x EOS mount
plus
a converted Seagul TLR camera.
If you can get a hold of some 120 film, I'll make it available for folks to borrow.
New exhibition starting tonight -
In the eyes of women...
Looks good!
Hi all
I was wondering that how many of you who care about Camera Lens.
I don't use AF Confirm with manual lenses. It's all by eye, and my eyes arn't that great...
Any one else having problems accessing Flickr?
No, just tried it and it's ok for me at work today.
strange... the last three days I can surf just about everywhere else, but Flickr takes forever and a day to load - more often than not, not load at all. :-(
I am having problems with yahoo though, and flickr is owned by yahoo.
and my facebook too!
All sorted, Flickr working again... guess they were probably doing some server maintenance...

Hey does anyone in the group have any idea where I can get large prints made (like A2 size, or 16x20in or whatever that is in cm) and preferably mounted on wood? I'm in a bit of a spot and don't really have the time (or money) to test out a bunch of random places. Thanks!
Nguyen Cau,
1 Ba Trieu st
It's a couple of doors down from where Bobby Chinn's was. The do a good job of mounting print and they'll do large sizes.
Thanks a lot! I usually get film developed from them, so I guess it's only natural that I should give them a go for the printing.

Hello Mai,
welcome to the group. As Will mentioned earlier, there's a weekend trip away at the end of the month. click on the Event's Link and Click "I'm Attending" if you'd like to go along.
Cheers.
Goodluck one and all and have fun.
This group is very interesting. I love photo and take photo. Can I share my pics in here ?
You can share your pics here, but we also have a flickr group, where you can comment on each others pics and get advice.

I'm wondering if it would be possible to share and maybe comment on each others shots, to get some feed back and learn ...
Is there a place where members could upload, let's say, 2, 3 or 4 of their favorite shot's of the day?
Cheers, Nicole
Thanks Will, for everythings

More than only a few, but I couldn't give you an exact figure. Check out the member list - that might give you a clue.

Sure, I have seen the event.

Thank you guys

Guys, i am a local gal and newbie too. See you at the meet-up.
**FEBRUARY MEET-UP**
The meet-up will take place on Saturday 28th February.
Thoughts or suggestions please...
time?
Not decided yet as I'm still asking for suggestions...
Around the Truch Bach area etc sounds cool too.
Unless someone else has an objection, can we consolidate on Truc Bak Lake?
More on Truc Bak & West Lake, and
a Wkiki entry.

Will, when is our meet-up?
Is this Saturday night confirmed?
Don't miss next meet-up of Multi~~~.
Justin plans to have next party next Saturday.
Hi, am arriving in Hanoi at the beginning of March. I would love to join you guys then. Is there any particular meeting place?
Hi. Welcome to Hanoi, and thanks for joining! We're in the process of picking a meetup place for this month. Stay tuned...
Oops... just realized that you're looking at March already. We have meetups once a month. The location and times can be proposed by anyone. It usually takes a week or two to get the details ironed out. They'll get posted here a week or so before the meetup. Cheers...
