Should we post our list or keep it secret until the day of the outing?

TREASURE HUNT

Hi all,

I know meeting up is a bit tricky at times, so I would be interested in knowing if there is anyone who would be up for a Photography Treasure Hunt.

Basically the idea is anyone wanting to play submits a list of 5 shots everyone else has to take, plus points

(I have a sample list below)

Everyone has 2 weeks to accomplish as many shots as possible and the one with the most points wins.

If more than 5 people want to play, we'll set a date.

I look forward to hearing if anyone else wants to play...

Here are some sample shots to get the creative juices flowing:

1. A coal merchant pushing his wares at sunrise - 30 points
2. Someone in uniform picking their nose - 50 points
3. Roast Dog on sale - 20 points
4. "An accident waiting to happen" - 10 points
5. Restaurant staff at work in the kitchen - 15 points

Hi folks,

Sorry about the lack of event for this month so far, I've been so busy my feet have barely touched the ground.

Any suggestions for venue / trip?

Hi folks, looks like I'll be spending the weekend processing shots and making some DIY Diffusion Screens. If you feel like dropping by, give me a buzz on 0123 8657967 to see if I'm home.

Here's the result of a previous DIY activity - a Home-made (HM) Beauty Dish.

It's made from a plactic basin, some party plates, a bit of wire, black spray paint and mounted to a canibalised Gel filter holder which clips onto my barndoors.

Hi folks, are we alive or dead? I know this recent rain has been a bit of a dampner especially on travel around town, but is anyone interested in doning something soon-ish?

This weekend is out, too close and more rain on the way, unless you want to work in my studio?

Anyone else with alternatives?

Hey vulephuong welcome. Yes, it is lovely weather for some photos.

Since Will (loominpapa) is away at this time, is anyone interested in doing a studio/indoor-outdoor activity?

I have a studio and terrace, nearby is West Lake and some "browning off" lotus which could be fun with a few models and reflectors.

Anyone know a few people who'd like to join us and swap some modelling for pics?

I'll be organising a NOVEMBER meet up at some point, but I'm off to the US for a couple of weeks tomorrow.

Any suggestions for a meet up in November would be very welcome.

This is one large group!

At the next monthly meet up (November) we had better see a few more people turn out - or else!

Seriously though, we always have a laugh when members get together, so try and make the next one folks.

Well, it's 7:30 in the morning and raining 'cats and dogs'.

I don't know if you will be there, it's a question of how 'hard core' photo-freak you believe yourself to be.

I'll be there, and I'll bring some ziplock bags for thoese without rain protection for their cameras.

But I guess, if you're reading this, it's probably already too late ;-)

anyone, with any type of camera, is more than welcome.

I've seen people using a variety of cameras, including: 35mm (film) slr cameras, compact digital, a Russian rangefinder (manual point and shoot) camera, twin lens reflex, and prosumer digital slr's.

The whole idea, someone correct me if I'm wrong, is to meet up, enjoy each other's company, go somewhere and more or less do your own thing with whatever you've got to play with.

You are cetrainly welcome here.

**OCTOBER MEET UP**

As I'm away for the middle part of October, this one's going to be very soon - Saturday 4th October.

This time we'll keep it local, no travelling out to the provinces this time. Also, we'll just be meeting up for the morning and sharing our pictures and getting to know each other over lunch afterwards.

The plan is to tap that rich vein of urban photographic opportunity that is Hanoi's Old Quarter. Whether you're looking for markets, crowded streets, traditional craft streets, it's all there.

So come and join us at 8 AM, Saturday 4th October. We'll meet at the north end of Hoan Kiem Lake, opposite the fountain.

Please confirm attendance on the event page.

You can contact me on 0903 299 478 or by TNH mail.

Some interesting and unexpected events on thies trip made it very worthwhile and personally rewarding.

Just posted a few pics here, putting the rest on Flickr.

Look forward to the next meet.

It'd be nice if it was kind of like a morning (1/2 day) event somewhere easy to get to, at an early hour with lots of locally interesting diversions...

:-D Cheers.

Attention TNH Photographers!

Transport is booked and will be meeting us outside Ete, 95 Giang Van Minh, Ba Dinh District at 8AM this Saturday (20th).

The transport cost is 900,000VND split between us, so depending on numbers (13/15 - some are undecided) it should be pretty reasonable.

Please can you SMS or mail me (TNH mail) to confirm attendance.

You can contact me on 0903 299 478.

***SEPTEMBER MEET***

Looks like we've got a bigger group this time - great!

I think we can combine Van Phuc 'Silk Village' and Duyen Thai 'Lacquerware village' in one day, as they are both in Ha Tay Province and easily reached.

The list of members for the trip is:

loominpapa +1
grubby
Jackfruit
TSC Tempest
angelonbroomstick +3
DevDuo +1
kinvanhoa

Total = 12

Let me know if you are not on the list and want to come, or if you are not going to make it. I need to know by Monday please, so transport can be arranged.

Looking forward to it!

P.S please excuse my typos on the email...

I bought a dry cabinet recently. It controls the humidity level inside (powered by mains electricity).

The smallest one is $80 which would be big enough for a few lenses, maybe 2 camera bodies, and a few other bits and pieces. A-Dong Photo has lots of sizes.

It is really important to keep you gear dry, especially lenses, and especially in the cooler weather. 6 of my lenses suffered from fungal growth during the high humidity and low temperatures of March/April this year.

Failing a dry cabinet, you can seal gear in zip-lock bags with packets of silica gel.

posted about 2 months ago by angelonbroomstick

question: what do you guys do to keep ur camera from sweating in this sauna? my sister said there is some type of box to keep the camera from humidity. I saw some and it's made from plastic so i don't know how protective it could be. Help plz?

Hey folks,

It's time to organise the September meet!

Proposed date: Saturday, 20th September.

Let's have some suggestions for a venue/trip for the day, please. PM, SMS, or post here.

Suggestions for a venue so far:

-Silk Village
-Laquerware Village
-Aircraft musuem

Like last time, I will arrange four wheeled transport for those that don't drive or would like to save their backsides the pain of going by motorbike. I need to know at least three days before though, so I can get the right transport.

We'd aim to meet early in the morning (0800 or so), and be back for early evening.

I think it'd be cool if we could end the day with a few drinks and a meal too.

Let me know if you're interested in going. I'll update the event in the calendar once details have been decided.

Look forward to seeing all of you on the 20th!

posted about 3 months ago by angelonbroomstick

Check the message board here, emails will be sent as well.

Hey i am new to this group. Just wondering if anyone interested in a random photoshoot next week?i have an idea but would like to go shoot with someone else as well! Also, i am working on an organic farming project with a village outside of the city and would need a volunteer photographer in the near future to take photos for promotional materials...in return you get a nice escape from a city and clusters and perhaps some delis veggies. if you are interested, plz msg me.
thanks
p.s OH and anyone here knows much about DSRL 40? i just got a new one and would appreciate some mentoring even i've figured quite a bit on my own as well.

posted about 3 months ago by loominpapa

OK, so the meet up is this Saturday.

Members coming are (at the last count) grubby, TSC + 2, Arundati +1, Granteralus, Loominpapa.

In total that's 8. Anyone else, let me know.

TSC's trying to arrange a minivan, or some such transport to get us there, but I assume some of you will want to drive. Let me know if you need transport.

Where would be the best place to meet? I assume somewhere fairly central, so let's say by the entrance to The Huc (Red) Bridge on Hoan Kiem lake.

I think it would be worthwhile heading out as early as possible to make the most of the morning - I was thinking of 08:00. Any problems with that?

PM, email or contact me on 0903 299 478

My name is Nick. Moved to Hanoi two months ago. Former USAF photographer. Feel like getting back into it abit. Recently ordered some FSU (film) cameras and glass on ebay. Might need some gadgets and do-dads. Will need to know where I can get some e-6 and possibly B&W processed with digital scanning onto a CD.

Can anyone give me some reccomendations on shops where I can buy this pseudo-Leica stuff and some good "normal price" processing and scanning?

Private message OK.

Thanks,

Nick

posted about 3 months ago by loominpapa

OK, looks like it is Saturday then (Guffman, hopefully we can do one on a Sunday next time).

Arundati I assume you'll be motorbiking then?

Who else needs transport?

I don't drive a bike so I'll be looking into options. Let me know ASAP.

posted about 3 months ago by arundati

Yeah, I like Vong village too, despite the fact that nearly nothing left there :( Wait to the October...
If we go all the day, we'll have rather much time, enough for visiting to Dong Ho, both are famous tourist spots and near to each other.
I register for me and 1 more friend. Saturday is better for me too.
I prefer bikes to car because of the mobility. The scene on the way can't be ignored. But car is safer :)

posted about 3 months ago by TscTempest

Tsc & Janine

Hi loominpapa, I may have some more (+3?), I'll call you when I get back. Travelling today, so you should hear from me in the next couple of days. :-D

posted about 3 months ago by loominpapa

Phu Lang sounds good to me. (I also like the idea of Vong village, but that sounds like it would be better in the early autumn).

Looks like we've got 5 people, so we could hire transport to get there and back. 50km should take about 60 - 90mins to get to, I reckon.

Saturday would be the best day for me, any problems with Saturday?

Thoughts on transport?
Let me know then I'll put it in the events calendar.

posted about 3 months ago by TscTempest

Tsc & Janine

Hmmmm, I like the idea of Phu Lang.

[I like "happy snapping," most of my tavel pics are nothing more than that] :-D

posted about 3 months ago by arundati

I recommend 2 spots : Dong Ho Painting village, and Phu Lang Earthenware village.
But it's rather far from the centre of Hanoi, about 50km. So, we need enough bikes. Otherwise, Bat Trang - ceramics village is the choice, only 10km and we can go by public bus (But personnally, I think it's somehow commercialized now).
PS : I'm not a professional photographer, so I don't care much about the techniques as you do...

posted about 3 months ago by TscTempest

Tsc & Janine

Here's a write up on some of the craft villages:

http://www.vnviews.com/vietnam-travel-misc/craft/Vietnam-The-Craft-Villages.php

And here's a list on some (I think) which are probably close enough for a quik visit:

Bat Trung Ceramics Village
Van Phuc Silk Village
Le mat Snake Vilage
Doi Tam Drum-making Village
Dao Phuc or Hoi Cham Tam Watter Puppet making villages
Dong Ho Painting Village
Dong Ki Wood Sculpture Vilage
Phu Lang Earthenware Vilage
Buoi Paper making Village
Chuong Conical (Non) Hat Village
Van nam Embroidery village
De Cau or Dong Mai Bronze Casting Villages

Can we clarify, just what people want to photograph?

Is it something specific requiring a particular approach and/or technique and we discuss/try that out?
OR
Day tripping and 'happy snapping' what ever we stumble across?
OR
Some other purpose?

What's the stimulus or motivation we're aiming for here, on this trip? Answering these questions might help to select the most suitable 'next' location.

BTW, I'm keen to photograph craftspersons in the process of making something, from raw material collection through to finished product, i.e. documenting a production process. How about you?

Arundati - sound like a good idea. Any of those you would recommend?

posted about 3 months ago by arundati

But a little confused because I find it's different between views of foreigners and locals.

Aslo, a quick thanks to loominpapa for organising the get together at Lenin Park, I was actually on the way there, but an unforseen issue came up at home and I had to bail.

Some of the pics from the shot look really great! Especially the guy on the bench, and the tent :-D

Hi Arundati,

Welcome

I've always both sent the message to the group and posted it here, as well as announced on the Flickr Group I've set up to share the photos. The reason I didn't create an event this time was due to lack of response about the propsed event. A few of us eventually decided to meet up when we met in person at the New Hanoian bash the Friday before

I hope we can get a few more members together for another meet up in August - suggestions welcome.
