Description:
On Friday, May 16, 2008, 2000 students and residents of Hanoi will take personal and public, action to reduce air pollution. Volunteer groups, youth, and ordinary people are making pledges to walk, cycle or take buses as part of the first-ever “Green Transport Day” in Hanoi.
“At a time when traffic is a leading concern of everyone in Hanoi, Green Transport Day offers us a chance to change our daily practices and lifestyles,” said Action for the City executive director Dang Huong Giang. “This is a small step that everyone can take to make our city a better and cleaner place to live!”
Green Transport Day is an initiative launched by Action for the City to raise public awareness on air pollution caused by vehicles. This initiative was awarded a prize from the World Bank’s Vietnam Innovation Day 2007 and received funding from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation.
Green Transport Day aims to raise public awareness on emissions caused by vehicles through celebrating the collective action of communities for social change. The movement emphasizes the strategies of “one-on-one communication for behavior change” and “walk the talk”. Each participant of Green Transport Day is expected to be a “green ambassador” whose actions, not words, will convince their friends and loved ones to join the movement.
Young people especially university students have been supportive of Green Transport Day. They organize communication campaign in their schools, give talks at classes and display poster in public places. On the morning of May 16 students of the Trade Union University, Hanoi University and University of Transport and Communication will launch a Green Transport Fair on their campuses which includes free bike repair, information booths and games.
When asked about Green Transport Day, Pham Khoi Nguyen, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment said: “I support Green Transport Day. Each individual and the community as a whole needs to make an effort to improve our environment. Each small action by individuals adds up to a big impact”.
Action for the City is working with other groups in Hanoi to grow Green Transport Day into a movement. This movement encourages residents to walk, bike and take buses everyday or whenever possible. It also aims at advocating for policies that support green transport users.
Action for the City is a non-profit organization under VUSTA, established on 12 January 2007 and approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology. Its mission is to improve the quality of life for all in Hanoi and other cities of Vietnam by increasing community participation and policy advocacy.
