... is The New Hanoian's Q&A forum. If you've got a question about life in Hanoi that you think you should pose to someone in the know, here is the place to do it.
My husband and I are moving to Hanoi at the end of the year with our 6 month old baby. I would like to do some part time teaching (about 3 afternoons a week) and was wondering what kind of options for child minding are available other than hiring a nanny.
I have looked at a number of nursery schools/kindergartens online and the minimum age seems to be 18 months.
Any suggestions?

I know I'm planning ahead, but can anyone advise a nice place for Christmas Lunch. Last year we did the Sheraton in HCMC and it was great, but we have budget conscious friends with us this year so need somewhere nice but not as pricey. I guess what I really want is Christmas atmosphere, good food, fun and frivolity at a good price. Thanks in advance.

Hey, I know this isn’t really the right place to ask this but i don’t know where else to find out. I'm going to be living in Hanoi for much of next year and was wondering if anyone knew of/learnt off a Vietnamese teacher in Sydney, Australia. Northern dialect preferred, but I would be happy with anybody who speaks Vietnamese. The only courses that I’ve been able to find have been full time at Sydney uni. Thanks.

Does anyone know of a nice quiet place I could go to meditate? At the moment I try to do it at home, but it's hard to block out the noise from my housemates and the street. I'm not sure what buddhist temples or meditation centres there are in hanoi but anywhere that is open to the general public without attracting too much of a tourist crowd would be ideal...

Over the last 6 months I have seen several questions on TNH that are sport related, especially on places where you can watch live sport in Hanoi. However, in this time places have both opened, closed and been restructured. I'm desperately keen to get a big and accurate list of places where we can all confidently rock up to and view some action.
So if anybody knows names of pubs, restaurants, private houses inc. streets, phone numbers, t.v networks it would be amazing.
The only 2 places I know of are
Jaspas (Hanoi Towers) Hai Ba Trung.
Jafas (Sepultra) Sth African TV Network
Australian Network provides the Hyundai A-league football from Australia. They also do the AFL and NRL over the Australian winter. Most of us can view this at home.
Star Sports and (another vietnamese channel?) offer most of the EPL and European football.
I also heard of an Indian Restaurant provides cricket coverage. More info would be great.
Please post information on all live sporting events, in particular Southern Hemisphere Football, Rugby, and Cricket.
Thanks all!! Go the Black Caps in Oz and AB's for the slam!

2 years in and it's almost over. Kinda unbelievable really. I know of the AmCham party on Weds am and the Fusion one at noon. Is there anything else happening on election eve? Where's everyone gonna be the night of or the day after?

Hi all!
I'm wondering how you guys are reacting to the melamin scandal, started in China some time ago? I hear that the stuff can be in bread, candy, milk, etc.
Now I read that certain products from Malaysia also contain melamin...
Is there anything one should avoid eating at this time?

Do people get much spam in response to things they post here? I just asked a question two days ago and just got the following spam message (the funniest part is the sender claims to "love" my profile - except my profile is blank except for my name...).
But is there monitoring of this stuff? Is there a function where you can report users like this who are using their accounts for spamming?
Thanks,
Tim

I am on Van Ho Ba, near Dai Co Viet and Ba Trieu, and am MUCH better off than the Le Duan side of Lenin Park. Wow, went over there today when it wasnt raining and it was insane. People were catching what was the Lenin Park lake fish ON Le Duan and puttin them into bags for what I assume was dinner. The water was a few feet deep in many parts and most people were walking their motorbikes down the road.
I digress...
Point being, its hard to know how serious the situation is throughout the city because the news I can find online is (possibly) exagerated and there is only so far I can go on foot. Dont feel like motorbiking til this is over, Friday's swimming with motorbike experience was enough for me.

Does anyone know the name and number of the taxi company which employs all female drivers?
I once saw one of their taxis around the Hoan Kiem area, but it didn't occur to me to note it down at the time.
Thanks!

Does anybody know of any whitewater kayakers in town? Is that something that anyone does around Hanoi at all? Or - if no one is doing it yet, but you are a paddler, please get in touch and we'll see if we can figure something out (although I don't have any gear in town, which I imagine would be the big hurdle).

I have been searching around for a while and am struggling to find short-term work with local NGOs. Does anyone have advice? It seems like most people line up jobs before they get here but I thought it be easier in-country. Any comments?
Thanks for your help. Cheers!
