Okay, no problem.
I bought a dog three years ago and I haven't had any problems with her at all. There are lots of Hanoians who love fancy dog breeds and they tend to differentiate between "dinner dogs" and "house dogs".
There are dog clubs (Vietnamese speakers) and lots of vets, though not too many great places to walk a dog. One place I like to go is Xom Chua Street right on West Lake. I guess any of the small lakes would be good to walk around. I always thought it'd be nice to take my dog for a walk around the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum area, but I wouldn't dare.
There's little to no good grass and there aren't any dog parks, but people won't look at you crazy for having a dog on a leash out on the street.
You do have to be careful if your dog is big or really handsome because they are often stolen to be resold or eaten. I'm told thieves particularly like big blonde dogs. Anyway, the traffic is awful so you don't want to leave it outside unattended.
Otherwise you should be fine! Don't count on having a garden or any lawn at whatever place you rent -- your pooch will have to get used to squatting on cement.
Good luck! You shouldn't have any problems!

thank you very much for the response. my dogs are pugs, they are actually originally from thailand and bali... so they know asia!hopefully thats not a common menu breed???!!!
as to the housing with them question, do you find its hard to find a rental with a dog? should we tell the landlord before,or after? its very uncommon then to have garden or outdoor space then...too bad!
sorry for so many questions...
cheers

Number one point of consideration:
KEEP THEM ON A LEASH AT ALL TIMES.
I have friends who were walking their dog on the beach down at Danang in the glorious sunshine, and they were so enamoured by the climate that they let the lil' fuzzball go for a run. Two men pulled up on a motorcycle, gave the dog a swift cudgeling, and then rode off with it before the mere thought of a bark was cogitated.
It happens. Be careful. On your guard. Take precautions. Don't be a victim. Etc.
We have two dalmation puppies and I walk them most days around the rapidly diminishing agricultural areas of Cau Giay. I narrow my eyes every time I see someone paying too much attention, and put my hand in my pocket...

wow. wonderful! is this because of the fact the locals eat dog? bali had a serious problom with dognapping for ransom, bangkok had no such worries, but serious worries about strays...is it really that they would want to eat my little chinese pugs???
| Was this answer ... |
They probably wouldn't eat a pug, but they would steal it and resell it to someone else. Pugs are rare in Hanoi (saw my first one here yesterday!) and they could probably sell it for a few million dong.
Definitely tell the landlord in advance that you have animals. I've lived in about five different places here and each one of my landlords was fine with animals, so you should be able to find something.

thank you both for the good responses. funny, i thought they might be kind of common there. there were loads in bangkok, and very cheap... our girl was only 35pounds sterling!i assumed because they are originally from china we may find lots in vietnam too. well we will just have to keep them close, we did in bali too.. a shame but to be expected i guess if they are worth loads.
one last question , if its possible..
anyone know of a guesthouse or cheap hotel that will take us with the dogs until we find a place? were on a budget, but not backpackers.....
cheers

Hi
just on another point away from all the good accurate information above-
what are your longer term plans?
I ask as if you are not heading in a year or two from Hanoi to another country close by in Asia look at the regulations for animals entering where you may head to from here.
Australia,NZ etc have strict regulations about animals entering.

ya i know, i know! my husband actually works in mining in australia, and part of the reason i live in south east asia, is because the dogs would have to go through a terrible quarantine to go to australia. also its much cheaper to live in asia, and frankly nicer!

hey

First to lowcy29, what kind of a dog do you want? While I have been in Vietnam for almost 3 years, I am still active in breeding and showing pure-bred dogs in Canada and also the United States. Perhaps I can help you get a dog from Canada. Canadian Kennel Club registered dogs are widely accepted throughout the world and it is mandatory that certificate of registration be issued with each dog a member sells.
Today I discovered that there is a Viet Nam Kennel Club. They had a show in Saigon last month. Personally, I would like to become active in promoting the hobby here in Vietnam. It's not only a great hobby and way to meet people, but it may also serve in helping to educate the people.
A week ago Friday I discovered a lovely miniature Dachshund puppy in the street market behind Dai Co Viet Street. After some negotiation with the owner, he is now mine. My house is now a home.... although my cat may not agree with me on that.
If there are any other New Hanoians that share my interest, I would love to make acquaintance with you.
Have a great day! Enjoy your dogs, but don't let them out of your sight.
