Buying airfare in Hanoi
no photo available

I'll be moving to Hanoi for 5 months and (surprise!) would like to have my girlfriend come out and visit during that time. Only problem: airfare from the East Coast of the U.S. to Hanoi is expensive! Would flights be significantly cheaper working through an agent once I get to Hanoi? Cruising the internet hasn't been very promising ($1800US for an August trip). Any general tips? Thanks much and I can't wait to get out there.

It is best for you guys to book and purchase the ticket from the States since the departure will happen there, meaning it will be cheaper to book from there. Also, tickets to VN are much more expensive during the summer months when students are out of school and travel with family, etc. If your gf can wait until September to visit, the price of the ticket can be knocked off by about 500 bucks. Good luck!

Btw, don't book the ticket online -- have her go see a tour agency. If she can find a Vietnamese-owned (or asian-owned) agency, they should have the best deals to VN.

Saigon, October 2008

I live in the US and have had good luck using websites like "bookingbuddy.com" to compare airfares. I also like "kayak.com" because you can see a chart of when the prices go up and down.

Qynn is right about how the time of the year has a lot to do with the prices. Also, if she can fly from mon-thurs, the tickets tend to be cheaper than on the weekends. I booked my one way ticket to Saigon from California a couple of weeks ago for $625 and now the cheapest I can find is $750. I think the prices have gone up due to rising fuel prices and it being closer to August. Booking 3-4 months in advance has helped me get some good deals. Good luck!
