Stolen computers - Hanoi Answers

Stolen computers

Our two computers have been stolen in our house yesterday night (together with 3 cameras, an USB backup hard-drive and two bags).

The two computers are an Apple MacBook Pro 17" and a black MacBook. They both come with French (AZERTY) keyboards (and the MBP has a broken corner on the left).

We filed a report to the police, gave our landowner all the necessary details about the stolen stuff.

We do not have much hope in getting them back. However, if someone, by chance, happens to see one of them in a second-hand shop, or on a classified ad, it would be of invaluable help for us, since both the laptops AND the backup disk have been stolen, which means that we do not have any data left...

Are there "reknown" places in Hanoi where this stuff can be sold ? (Apple computer are not so common).

Thanks in advance

Alexis

Sorry to hear that. It's really not cool when this happen to you. And losing data is definitely the biggest issue here.

you are right mac are so not common here in Vietnam. I would ask a Vietnamese friend or staff to help you (unless you speak enough Vietnamese) and browse Vietnamese site selling 2nd hand stuff.
unfortunately i can't recall the site but i have seen a couple by chance once.

There is also a market somewhere in Hanoi where you can often find stolen items. Again i am sorry but i don't know the name and location but heard about it.

good luck

Ouch. very sorry to hear that Alexis. It's never happened to me, but that possibility is one reason I keep my most important files backed up over the internet using subversion.
Not what you want to hear, I'm sure, but anyway good luck in retrieving your data.

Man, too bad. I'm planning on moving to Hanoi soon. I will have a laptop and concerned about losing it and all the data. Is theft and breaking in a common occurance ? How does one secure your possessions whether you are renting or staying in a hotel ? You can't take everything with you all the time!

very sorry about that. you try to find them in the {Mua Ban} paper or you can look for them in google seach with your Computer name and seller location in Hanoi .
remember that some one stole the computer and sale your computer in the shop or marketing online.
good luck to you.

If anyone is selling a black macbook or a macbook pro 17, I am totally in the market... That was truly tasteless, even for me. That sucks massive amounts of ass that this happened to you. The worst is the hard drive. Why even take that, it is worthless used, they wouldn't even get a couple of bucks for it. Take Grubby's advice and back your important tish up online. Theft is far too common everywhere to leave yourself and your extremely important personal data so susceptible to loss. I will keep my one good eye open. Tough break bud.

i agree with the online backup. I mean you can use a gmail account for that, there is actually a good app for that.

Or simply get an account with dreamhost, they offer massive storage for so cheap, and you can even make yourself a site for fun.

the only problem, you may have is if you are into graphic design, video and music; your file will take a while to upload, but it's still better.
