Hi, I'm hoping to live in Hanoi for a year starting this October. I will not be working. Can I just live on a tourist visa? Or do you know about a student visa (I've heard it lasts for a year but I don't know how difficult it is to get one. I don't mind doing a course to learn Vietnamese, if that's what it takes, but I don't want to pay the earth for the privilege. Boring I know but I've trawled the web and am non the wiser. Hope you can enlighten me. Cheers - Mike.

Why not stay on business visa? I have heard people getting trouble extending tourist visa more than 4 times(that will be 4 months). Many travel agencies can upgrade your tourist visa to business visa for about 90$ for a 6 month visa(which again can be upgraded).
Note: I don't know what you are planning to do in VN, but if you plan to use business visa without having a "valid reason", be aware of that the different provinces in VN handle the laws in different ways. If you stay in Ha Noi you will probably have no problem, but if you do long-term stay in other provinces you should be careful. I got expelled because of that, and right now sitting in my home country :'(

Business visa ..think about exporting something back to your home country. Make a business card and you ARE doing business. Promote VN products or something. Look at connections between your home country and VN.
