I used the French Hospital dentist and she was excellent, probably not the cheapest in Hanoi but certainly thorough, professional and very gentle.

The dentist belonging to the Family Medical Practice (Van Phuc, Kim Ma) is another option. The practice is very modern and up-to-date (international standard). But I found that they tried to "sell" me things that were not necessary, e.g. X-ray and even an operation. A second dentist I visited later told me the operation was by no means necessary.

The dentist on Nguyen Du near Pho Hue is not bad, and very inexpensive. Never had anything major done, but fillings and cleanings are efficient and professional.

Have had a fair bit of dental work done at SOS, not cheap but a good job.

Dr. Fred Abel gets the best reviews that I know of -- and I'm going to visit him again next month. He is very thorough. The phone number is (04) 715-2286 and he's located at 51 Nguyen Khac Hien, near Truc Bac lake and Sofitel Plaza hotel.

I'm a big fan of the Hanoi Family Medical physicians but would steer clear of the dental practice. Trying to sell you all the extras (see previous post) is the least of it. If the dentist had not insisted upon keeping my mouth open with a large wooden block and then became enraged when I tried to volunteer information about previous treatment, I would have not believed that he slapped my friend in the face when she accidently bit his finger during a procedure. The dentist's wife also practices dentistry (performs exams, fills cavities, etc.) but she is actually not a dentist.
