International Shipping - Hanoi Answers

International Shipping

Ugh, I didn't mean to...but the gifts keep coming and the price of tailoring has left me with TOO MUCH STUFF! Now that I am about to leave, I need to think about shipping half of it home (about 15kg). My question is, how reliable is the regular post here? I don't want to ship through FedEx or DHL - the customs tax is ridiculous. Will my box arrive in one piece? Time isn't so much an issue but I don't want to wait 6 months (hence, no ship). I'm sure people have experience with this...I need to send to Australia. Help??

I've never had things not turn up when mailing outward from VN, but I don't have huge experience with it. If memory serves it takes 2 or 3 weeks to the US. Outward shipping seems much more reliable than inward for whatever reason.

To post any packages overseas you'll need to do it through the main post office East of HK lake (special foreigners branch on the corner).

We've always had great luck with the regular post here. There was one occasion where two of the items in a box of many were "swapped" out w/some other things -- believe it was likely a Customs mix up.

The service is incredibly quick and cheap, compared to most other SEA countries. When mailing things to the States, it often takes a week and a half.

Thanks for the information! Can I use any plain cardboard box (that doesn't have writing all over it) or do I need to use a special one I purchase from the PO? Are there any specific packaging requirements I might not be aware of?

Agree with kparsons, the mail service in my experience is good. Any cardboard box will do, and a few places in the old quarter selling used boxes. Take your sealing tape to the PO, just in case they want to check the contents. Be sure to pack and seal it up securely nce the paperwork finished.

I've shipped a box to Canada once a year for 8 years from the central post office. Never had a problem. By sea it's 3 months but much cheaper than the faster route. They have boxes, markers and tape (although you can take your own). Don't pack anything as they will have a look. Fill out customs forms. I believe they have insurance for a small fee. It's usually fast and easy... but take a book in case ...

$100 for a 10 kg box = cheap?? I think ouchie. Hopefully it shows up! I almost took the ship rate (.5 mil VND).

I know you've already shipped it, but next time consider just packing an extra piece of luggage for the plane ride out. For United Airlines, going to the US, it's $70 for an additional piece - not a bad price to pay considering that it'll be less of a hassle.
