So, this morning I turn on my laptop and whaddya know, it doesn't boot up. Correction, at first it gets to the HP (pavilion dv1000) screen, there are a few blue lines running across it, and sticks. So I restart, and nothing. The keyboard and power lights come on, the cdrom flashes a few times, but nothing else - not even the bios screen. Last night I let my antivirus software run and then automatically power down. I know there was a worm virus from plugging into the internet line here. After checking online, it seems that maybe the motherboard is fried. Really, I don't know what to do about this! Are there any reputable shops here that can work with HP laptops? UGH!!!

there was once time my laptop can not boot up, too. it just stopped at the Asus screen, didn't go to the Window welcome screen. I restarted many times but it was still the same. I had to use WinPE ( Window pre-install environment) to save all my data and then reinstalled Window. one famous computer company in Hanoi that I recommend is TRAN ANH (www.trananh.com.vn) TRAN ANH COMPANY 1174 duong Lang- Dong Da TRẦN ANH COMPANY 1174 Đường Láng-Đống Đa Kim.

Thanks for the reply. I called them and they only fix computers that are purchased at their store. I don't have any of my WinXP discs, I have nothing. So aggravating!

Try i3 Systems, Mr. Nguyen Trung Tuyen at tuyen.nt@i3systems.net. They have been very helpful to me.

You should try a reputable store of FPT Co. Ltd at 45 Thai Ha str. They would fix your computer without any fee. HP is one of their onsale products, so they prove tobe expert on it. Try this http://www.instore.vn/
Thanks for the info. I have had this laptop for three years and didn't buy it here. How/why would a shop fix my computer without any fee?
It is their advertising campaign on the occasion of Christmas, and maybe it would last longer than just during the holiday. It's their way to popularize their brand and store. So try!
Sorry, I've contacted them and it's a pity that their campaign has ended. So you may contact the person that Tamvong recommend you.

You are smart to ask for a reputable shop. After the movers graciously broke my computer last week and let my computer chair get stolen, I took the computer to a repair shop to get it fixed because I don't have the resources to troubleshoot a dead computer myself here. They fixed the broken hardware problem, but they created a bigger, more time consuming software problem just out of pure ignorance. So now I have to burn everything to dvd and format my hard drive. If at all possible, watch them when they mess with your computer.

always back up your files if at all possible before giving your computer to a shop here. I've heard more than once of shops reformatting hard drives without asking, losing everything on the drive.
Hi all. Just to quickly follow this up - I did contact Mr. Tuyen as suggested. He was very nice and promptly answered all my questions. It took about two weeks to get my laptop back, the problem being a bad motherboard "chipset" = $150 replacement. So far it seems to work just fine, however my CD writer has stopped burning cds. I am trying to sort this out, and I'll quickly explain the problem in case you have some suggestions. I have tried using three different brands of blank cdrs, through three different programs (iTunes, Sonic, Nero, as well as XP). They are all telling me the same error: Disc write-protected (or closed). I can listen to audio cds and watch DVDs, but not burn them. Annoying, help?

Sounds like maybe a driver issue to me
