Has anyone been to Mai Chau by public bus? Can you post details of where the bus leaves from (My Dinh Bus Station perhaps)and the times it leaves and returns to Hanoi (maybe that's a timetable we're after!)

As far as I am concerned, you can start at Ha Dong Bus Station. There are two buses leaving in between 10-11am and another two buses between 13-14.30pm. The fair is 30 000 VND each.

When reaching the destinatio, you can have a rest in a house on stilts (nhà sàn) at Lác village or Văn village and it costs 15 000 each. If you go on a tour, the price is up to 100 000-150 000 each. People tend to choose Lác village because it specializes for tourists rather than Văn village. However, Văn village is near a spring which is very beautiful and also because it is less crowded than Lác village. Additionally, you can visit some caves nearby like: Trieu (Hang Triều) or you can choose to visit the local market to buy some hand-made souvenirs for your friends and relatives.

In the evening, you can enjoy a very traditional activity of the local people like dancing and singing around a fire.

2 days for the trip is ok. If you decide to travel like the Vietnamese people often do, it's much cheaper but then you have to do everything by yourself... and it's a great problem, so I recommend you go with a Vietnamese guide or with a tour with other foreigners.

Have a nice trip! :)
