I'm looking to get internet going in the house and I'm looking to get DSL and a wireless router. I've heard FPT are the fastest and I'm going to be using it mainly for downloading TV shows. So any suggestions or advice would be grand.
Thanks.

I use FPT due to having no choice...and it's passable....They seem to just keep piling people on the node as it get's slower every month...They also throttle traffic which is a bulls**t thing to do, for the prices they are charging....
That said...After they install, make sure and change the user/pwd on your router, Viet Nam News reported that VN has one of the largest unsecured DSL networks due to the fact that most(70%ish if I remember correctly) people are using the easily looked up defaults for both user/pwd...and FPT doesn't seem to care...Once on a service call the guy looked at me like I was crazy and/or up to no-good for having a password he didn't know...
I use mine almost elxclusively to sail the seas of piracy, especially TV programs, so I went with the unlimited package which runs 'bout 1 million VND per month....And for the most part it delivers acceptable service, with most popular US shows coming down in torrents in 3 or 4 hours....

I can second billyt's opinion on FPT. They are acceptable but getting slower.
I was over a friend's house the other day and he was getting 115KB/S internationally with Viettel DSL.
Viettel are a newer player, and I don't know how much you can generalize from this one case, but I think I might give them a try.

115KB/S is a lot better than the average 40KB/S I get with FPT, to be clear.

Anyway, FPT is much better than Viettel, regardless of its allowance to watch movies online on www.ephim.com

My company uses FPT, I think it is good.

How would one go about to determine the exact internet speed that's in one's house?

You can use the flash test at
http://www.speedtest.net/
to get an idea of speed from your house to Hong Kong. For speeds inside Vietnam (which will be higher) just watch your browser as it downloads something large - it will tell you the download speed in Kb/s.
Not that some places measure in kb/s - kilobits per second, and some in Kb/s - kilobytes per second. To get the latter from the former, divide by 8.
Either way you slice it, broadband speeds from VN to the rest of the world are not great.

I'm using FPT (megaME offer - "5120/640k bits per sec")
since august and since 10 days it slow down too much. I cannot work anymore.
I've never reached the contractual speed by checking with speedtest.net
When you complaint, they speeed up and then slow down in the same day.
I'am looking for an other ISP.
I'm living in Tay Ho street and would like to know if someone had a good experience with an other ISP?

I agree with BillyT and Grubby, we use FPT and got a Linksys router but still face the same frustrations of DSL in Hanoi. Unfortunately, FPT is the biggest player on the scene and hopefully new IT policy will be on soon next year after a lot of lobby from foreign investors to the government to overcome ferocious competitions. FPT has frequent 'server down' syndrome no matter what package you buy from them. But they are quick and efficient, if there is any hic, give them a call and they respond immediately. I would trust FPT for its coverage and technology and its pool of qualified techies. Good Luck ! This is Vietnam ! everything here is bittersweet.
