Why? Just look at Open Office. Allows you to create/open/save in MS format.

I'm right there with Steve on that opinion. Open Office is great alternative to the Microsoft Office Suite, and since it's open source, you're not all actually breaking the law by buying it (at any of those shops that line the east side of Pho Ly Nam De.) I've been using it for about 4 years to edit documents, preadsheets and some presentations that I've shared with users of the Evil Empire suite with very few -- albeit some -- conversion problems. (One great feature is that Open Office can export directly to PDF, so if you want to share your documents but not give away editing control, or force other people to use Office, it is quite easy.) You can download it from: http://www.openoffice.org/ If you're using a Mac, you might try the Aqua port available at: http://www.neooffice.org
(for some reason I glossed over the Powerbook G4 part of you question... maybe b/c I read the summary on the main page.) You're not going to be able to find Office for Mac in Hanoi. I've looked and had no luck at all. I highly suggest the NeoOffice Aqua port of Open Office. (Despite the big link on the front page of the NeoOffice site, don't be tempted to use the Sun Native port of Open Office just yet, this is a very early release.) 1) download NeoOffice from here: http://www.neooffice.org/neojava/en/download.php 2) then make sure to download and apply the most recent patch from here: http://www.neooffice.org/neojava/en/patch.php

I'll just chime in here with my 200 VND: OpenOffice is ready for prime time. It's always been a contender but there have been dramatic improvements made in the last year or so and imho it's a realistic alternative to MS Office now.

How is OpenOffice when you share work product with MSOffice users? I work on an Intel Mac and Mac Word 2004 spits the bit a little too often for my tastes. As for a legal version of Mac Office, you can try the FPT store on 1 Yen Phu - they are authorized Mac dealers. If you swing down to Saigon, there is a newly opened Apple Store - according to news accounts, Apple will open a few more in Vietnam within this year, including in Hanoi.
