I'm wondering if people would mind giving me a quick run-down of the different types of street food they enjoy? I'm talking all street food, from the 'single vendor on the corner' type operation to the 'slightly more formalised street stall with a roof' type operation. I know all the greatest hits - bun cha, pho, banh bao, nem, my xao, bun bo, com rang... what else am I missing?

Chan ga nuong-chickens feet
for those who are sea food addicted, or anyone who likes street food, try Cay. Its around Giang Vo lake. They serve like the best street food in Hanoi *in my opinion*, with all kinds, hot pot, winkles, oysters, shellfish, etc.
Talkin bout street foods makes me hungry...

I used to love the half-chicken with herbs eaten with Vietnamese baguette on Tong Duy Tan street food before I became paranoid about food hygiene.
Also on Luong Van Can there's a place that has buttered scallops served with honey-glazed Vietnamese baguette. Damn I just salivated.

Oh my God, buttered scallops? Honey-glazed baguette? Sounds AMAZING. What do I ask for? Who do I beg?
Thanks for the list Virezo, and everyone for all the suggestions. Very helpful!

2 more:
"half-chicken with herbs"= gà tần
"Honey-glazed baguette" = bánh mì nướng mật
I think you'd better write down their Vietnamese names or try to speak them because I'm sure if you ask for 'baguette' (or other foods' English names), the keepers won't understand you.

Hieu Tiu on Hoe Nhai Street. It's noodles with roasted pork, peanuts, cilantro and some yummy sauce! Delicious stuff! It's a tiny place right on the street and easy to miss.

Reading through the foregoing lists, I'd add Thit heo rung (wild boar) in various forms (BBQ'd or added to cha gio are great!) to the mix of enjoyable foods. I recall thit rung being generally available near to Hue. If someone knows a place to find the meat in Ha Noi, please post. Thanks.

virezo you are sadly wrong - i don't know where to find all these street foods that is why i rely on street food guides and what my friends recommend. Altho I'm pretty proud to say I've eaten about half your list!
Nghia tan (i think its called) near Nguyen van Huyen has lots of good street foods if anyone is that far out of the centre.
you know how it is in hanoi - eg. i need to buy a hammer. but where is hammer street??

de2facon, I don't think thịt heo rừng (wild boar) is listed as a street food. That's why I didn't list many of food here.
jhana. Congratulation! You surely have a lot of experience in Vietnamese street foods.
What I mean is: I can't write down here addresses because some of them are sold by vendors (where can I find them again?), some shops have moved to another places, some are in markets or in small alleys... The 'art of street food' is you just take them on the road whenever you like.
If I have time I'll try to list all of street foods and addresses for TNH. I'm sure it'll be worthwhile for both Vietnamese and foreigners.

What's the Vietnamese name and where to get the following:
A small (thin but long) bread (which reminds of a baguette), about 4cm wide, 20cm long (bread, sheesh!) which will be heated up in a small movable oven. Then some pate and chili is added. For a snack you'd buy around 5 of them. Yes, a bit like "Bánh mỳ pa tê" but smaller and no veggies, just pate and chili. I've seen it twice last autumn at the site where the big market used to be which is torn down now. Now I returned and have been looking all over old quarter, no luck. I love it, I need it!

my favourites change daily. cravings include bun cha on le van huu. I used to like the Bun Cha on Hang Manh street until it got too popular. They now prefry all their pieces and refry again. Double fry...yuck.
Today I feel like a banana flower salad...nice when it is hot outside.

I just found out: it's called Bánh Mỳ Patê Hải Phòng and they sold it yesterday at the Dồng Xuân Market.
