I'll be going to Ninh Binh, Tam Coc, Hoa Lu, and Phat Diem in a couple of weeks for a 2-day trip and was wondering if I need to take malaria medication for this little trip?? I have not yet left Hanoi, so I'm not exactly sure when and where malaria meds are necessary. If I do need to take them, does anyone know if I need a doctor's prescription to buy them and where I can get them??? Thanks so much in advance!!!

You don't need them, if your only off for 2 days and proberly staying in some sort of accomadation with a fan or A/C.
Now if you tell me your going to be staying in stagnanting swamp, naked, and sweating like a dog in a Chinese resuarant, i might tell you different.

There's no point in worrying about that. Ninh Binh is not deep inside a jungle. Actually it's a town with lot of hotels and restaurants...
Even if you're in a jungle you may not be bitten by a mosquito. Even you're bitten by a mosquito, it may not be an anopheles. Finally, even it's an anopheles, it might not have a blood meal from an infected human...
Look at those people in Ninh Binh. They aren't suffering malaria, are they?

and even then, you still have to protect yourself from mosquitos because of dengue fever. Better to forget about the malaria medication in Vietnam - use repellent, cover up and don't sit outside at dusk when they are worst.
