Moving to Hanoi
no photo available

Hi

I am moving to Hanoi with my partner, our 20-month old twins and dog in February next year. We are transferring with my partner's engineering firm. I would love to hear from other members who have moved to Hanoi with young children. Any general advice/tips woud be greatly received! I am also looking for tips on areas to live. Given we have young children my preference is for somewhere relatively quiet and secure. We have a monthly accommodation allowance of up to US$3700. I am also looking for advice on childcare centres in Hanoi. I would like to work while I am in Hanoi, at least part-time. Any tips on how to find a good child care centre would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Hi there,

We moved here 3 months ago, I have 3 kids ranging from 13 to 20 months.
We decided to live in Ciputra as its quiet, there are many small parks for the children UNIS school where you can join the fitness centre (Gym and Pool) for $200 per year (this can only be used out of school hours).
There is also a pre school which my youngest attends, its called Uniworld and is good value they run the international stream and also the integrated, my son loves it.
You will be able to get some very good accommodation for $3700 either in Ciputra or in Tay Ho. A lot of people don't like Ciputra as you could be anywhere in the world, its is rather charmless, but good for kids.
On the subject of working, if you have a teaching qualification you will find no shortage of work, if not then you may struggle. I haven't managed to find anything yet.
If you are going to be using push bikes i suggest you bring with you child seats as they are not available here, and also helmets.

Hi
There's a playgroup, where Mums/Dads and toddlers meet every Thursday between 3-5pm. You could email Linda and Sandy at hanoiplaygroup@gmail.com to join the group.

We moved back here from Spain and suddenly realised that there aren't many good playgrounds for your children to enjoy. However, with that housing allowance you could find a place with swimming pool and garden.

You could also hire good nanny/maid for a reasonable cost here. Also, as Louise said there are international nurseries/schools in Hanoi. I think there's a list with reviews on this website

Email me if you need more help. We have a 20 month old son - perhaps we could fix a play date.

Nha Trang, Vietnam

Tay Ho district ( westlake ) is quiet and safe, with lots of services catering to expats

I don't have kiddies as yet, but just wanna wish you a warm welcome. The Tay Ho area would probably be the nicest area for you, and is one of the quieter areas for walking / cycling. It's also got a decent selection of western products.

In terms of child-care facilities. There are quite a lot of options, but not all of which are worthwhile. The best thing to do I think, is to visit them upon arrival, check out the grounds & classes, talk to the staff & the teachers and spend time in your child's class. You'll soon get a feeling for a place & know whether it's right for your child or not.
