September Winners

Hello all New Hanoians! It was great to see that so many of you made it out to the C.A.M.A. party on Saturday. It was quite a bash. The sort of thing we've all come to expect from their events. We'll be sure to keep you posted on when the next one is up on the calendar. Even when they're as far out of the way as that one seemed to be, all it takes is a little bit of effort and you end up having a very memorable night. Let's everyone give Giles and the C.A.M.A. crew a hearty thanks for all they did. It was a great time. And, in the spirit of great times in new places, the October New Hanoian Meet Up is just around the corner. In past months we've gotten together to party in some of Hanoi's nightlife institutions. Dragonfly and Finnegan's showed us the best possible hospitality and we all had a great time. But for this one, the biggest meet up yet, we're changing things up a bit. For this one, we're going to take you to a just opened bar in the Trung Hoa neighborhood that is about to announce itself as one of the hot new nightlife destinations in Hanoi. Bar Red. It's a big new space that feels cavernous in comparison to the many tiny rectangular bars around town. There's space, and when you're looking for something other than another trip to the Old Quarter, this is where you'll be. We'll all be there on Saturday, October 13th. From 8pm-11pm, there will be free draft beer, a small selection of free mixed drinks, and free soft drinks for all New Hanoian members. That's right, all you have to do is be a member, and you're drinking for free. Located just off of Nguyen Thi Dinh street behind the Trung Hoa apartment buildings, it might not be a neighborhood you usually think of for nightlife. But, like the C.A.M.A. event, making that little extra effort will be eye opening. Here at the New Hanoian, we try to treat all our users with respect and appreciation. Some however, through their consistent contributions to the site, get an extra tip of the hat from us. Yes, it's time to announce the winners of last month's user contributions prizes. First up, we have a contributor who has found his writing groove here on the site. He says he's not in it for the prizes. He says it just feels good to be writing again for its own sake. Well folks, that's exactly the sort of person that gets prize consideration in these parts. To Snellopy, we're happy to present dinner and unlimited beer for six at The Spotted Cow. Snellopy is going to get a first hand look at the work new owners Nathan and Hieu Waddington have been doing with the Cow. One of Hanoi's original pub destinations, The Spotted Cow has been given a fresh coat of paint and is back offering its hearty pub fare, free flowing brew, and an atmosphere that is "pub" in more than name only. Snellopy and five of his friends will be the guests of honor, eating and drinking their way through an absolutely free evening. Next, we have a member who has been with us for many months, innamiam always seems to drop by from time to time with a well-written and helpful review. She makes it out to the meet ups and seems to be the sort of thoughtful community member we all appreciate having around. For that, her co-workers should be thanking her. Her contributions have earned she and her officemates a lunch for ten catered by the Oregano Deli. For once, they won't have to brave the mid-day traffic to enjoy a full spread for lunch that will include entrees, sandwiches, salads, and desserts. Already becoming the hot new delivery option the Ba Dinh and Dong Da areas, innamiam's office will get a chance to try the Oregano Deli's full range of Euro-Deli cuisine without lifting a finger. Congrats to our most recent user contribution award winners! Some of you may have noticed that we only had two awards this month instead of our customary three. This is because we have been reworking our awards system with the intention of putting these community prizes more in the hands of the community. Starting this month, one of our three prizes will go to the author of the most appreciated review of the month...as determined by you, the New Hanoians. As many of you know, beneath each review is a series of links where you can let everybody know what you think of any particular review. You can choose among "Well Written", "Funny", "Accurate", "Useful", and "Utter Rubbish". If you think somebody did a good job, choose among the four positive props that you can give. If you think that the user has just been using the space to be abusive, to misrepresent a place, or to secretly tout their own business, give them the ole "utter rubbish" stamp of disapproval. Don't over use it though. If you simply disagree with their review, don't call it rubbish. Review it yourself. The Review for each month that gets the most props will be one of our prize winners. So when you're reading over the reviews, don't be shy about sharing your impressions of them. All you have to do is sign in and click away. We'll be seeing you all at Bar Red on the 13th. The Staff of the New Hanoian.
