I recommend gourmet shop for cheese (at the back of sofitel metropole) and Veggy's (Veggy's Hanoi is at 99 Xuan Dieu Street, Quan Tay Ho. Telephone no is 04-7194630) which has a wide range of fresh products (cheese, mascarpone, fresh cream...)

There's a really wonderful new shop on Xuan Dieu called Oasis (near the turn off for Sheraton. They have lots of great cheese, fresh pasta and the owner, Marco, seems willing to find things that you want.
