Can anyone recommend a computer program shop. I need to find a Microsoft Office Word program to replace a Thai version that was installed on my laptop before arriving here. Thanks

Oh, so many! Wait - do you mean a licensed copy? If not, proceed with all due haste to either Lý Nam Đế street (just West of the OQ), or Lê Thanh Nghị ( south of and parallel to Đại Cô Việt at the bottom of Lenin Park). There will you find the treasure you seek. In case it's not obvious, look for the dozens of shops with signs that say "CD ROM / DVD". CDs run around 8,000 VND; DVDs 15 or so.

Thank you for your response. Yes, I am looking for a shop that sells a licensed program at a proper price, sorry I was not more clear. Copies can not be updated via internet.

So, you're the needle in the haystack! The Tran Anh computer shop (Cong Ty May Tinh Tran Anh) sells MS Office Basic 2003 for 186 USD, and the Small Business suite at 246. So basically US prices; these are legit, licensed programs obviously. My local sources say that they are one of the cheaper reputable computer places in town. 4 locations: 76 Nguyen Du; 134 Thai Ha; 185 Giang V; 95 Ly Nam De. We've bought printers and monitors and network equipment from them so far.

Why not just abandon the whole Micro$oft monopoly altogether? The site below is a link to an open source office package that does EVERYTHING MS does, only better and more reliable. Its worth a try and should you need some help just shout. Ill be glad to assist you. www.openoffice.org/
Thank you Steve for your advise about openoffice. I tried to download it but I was timed out. I copied 79% over two hours. Any advise? Also, thanks Cheapie for the addresses for the shops.
Hi Jake, many of the CD ROM shops I mentioned also carry CDs with free software such as OpenOffice. Free and open source software is particularly common in the shops on le thanh nghi because that's where the students shop. They are, however, often poorly labeled, and you need to know what version you want to buy or you'll end up with something old.
Many thanks on your advise, gentlemen. I was able to download OpenOffice last night when the internet shop below me closed. I really like this program. I will spread the word. Cheers
