I found this info about getting to CatBa on a tour operators site. They do run tours but apparently they help people with local transportation too.

I think I will be heading there on the 27th.
good luck

I don't think that last link worked.
Just go to http://www.slopony.com/ and click on Travel Info on the side panel.

Are you strapped for cash? Buffalo Tours does a great Mai Chau trip that will take you trekking deep into the valley to stay at a White Thai village. I've been all over north Vietnam and it was truly an awesome trip.
I do have the public bus info at my office; I'll PM you with it tomorrow.

I found that most tour operators only have private tours and not open ones to MC. I am not that strapped for cash but I also cant afford to spend $200-250 on a private tour. $120 is more my budget.

What about 3Days/2Nights for $155 per person? The lodge looks pretty posh and the price seems reasonable: http://maichaulodge.com/Default.aspx?ProductId=1

sapa is also great but you have to get the train pretty early at like 5am.
its worth it though, the scenery is beautiful and its such an interesting place.
theres also some pretty fairly priced hotels and guesthouses there and the food is cheap. the town is pretty easy to find your way around but if you really want to experiance sapa its probably best to book with a hotel that offers homestays etc..

I'm very much the adventurous sort and enjoy taking public transport outside major cities.
However, most folks I've talked to about a bus trip to the NW region tell me it's easier to book a tour and travel by jeep, mini-bus or motorcycle. According to a recent post on this site, you can get bus route maps and information on the Ha Noi Bus System-Main office at 16 Cao Ba Quat in Ba Dinh.

It's very easy to get to Tam Coc and the surrounding countryside. Most people do it as a day trip but there it can easily be fashioned into a weekender.

A bus trip to Cat Ba or Ha Long should be pretty straightforward. The road from the city to those areas is smooth sailn' ( run time for non-public transport about 4.5 hours)and returning by highway to the city in 2.5 depending on traffic. On the way to Ha Long be sure to spend some time in Bat Trang and Hai Phong if your schedule permits.

Enjoy your travels.

Mai Chau can be reached by public transport fairly easily; take a bus from the Hanoi bus station to HOA BINH TOWN (about two hours) and from Hoa Binh town local buses run to Mai Chau Valley at 6am, 12pm and 4pm daily. Costs 25,000VND and takes another hour and a half.
That bus stops at Tong Dau Junction; from there take a xe om to Ban Village or the main town.
If you go via public transport, you may be stopped and made to pay a 5,000VND entrance fee right before descending into the valley.

WORTH THE TRIP!

Don't hang out in the crappy, ultra-touristy Ban Village (Ban Lac); hire a guide and trek out to a White Thai village.
