I have major issues with mould. I don't like it, it doesn't like me (I can tell); basically we don't co-exist happily.
I have just moved into a house on West lake. Here, there is mould.
I would be grateful if people would comment on the effectiveness of the following methods for removing / preventing mould, and suggest other possible solutions. I know there's a certain level that I'll just have to tolerate - I want this to be as small as possible though!
Mould destruction methods:
* cross breezes - have windows open as much as possible, fans on;
* dehumidifier;
* dissicants - such as 'damp rid' and 'tinkling grandma' (local brand - loving the name);
* scrub walls and ceilings with sugar soap;
* pray to the fire Gods to rid this scurge from the earth - or at least my house.
Not sure about the effectiveness of the last method ... willing to give it a chance though.
Other recommendations would be most appreciated.
Thanks

I purposely chose a house that is hit directly by sunlight and I leave the curtains/blinds and windows open as much as possible. I still find patches of mold here and there ... behind wall hangings and such. The only way to really fix this would be for the plaster to be removed and then resealed using special paint and sealer but I guess home owners here do not see it as a huge issue and merely paint over it. If it is a concern for you, use a weak solution of bleach and water and wipe. Good luck!

There are 2 possible solutions, one as Ouriel has pointed out is to repaint, you can readily find Anti-fungus paint which should be used as the primer. Other 'remedies' would be to use vinegar (which stinks), lemon juice (which turns out to be expensive) and finally bleach (which stains) We tried everything above, including painting, but the mould just kept growing in beautiful white tufts of fur, I eventually just took to daily burning of the fur in the hope that it would dry out the wall. Our best solution thus far has been the use of a dehumidifier (20 litres in a matter of hours)

There is one substance, the only substance, I've found that will totally kill all the mold in your house ... anything biological actually. A Korean beverage called Soju. Not sure where one could find it in Hanoi though.

Soju can be bought in any Korean restaurant, or in any of the little supermarkets in the Trung Hoa area, I'm sure. Off hand, the only place I can say I've seen it with certainty recently would be the little convenience store across Tran Duy Hung from the Trung Hoa apartment complex called K-Mart. Again, anywhere in that area will probably have it.

Teacherman, you are quite serious about the Soju? As anti-fungus paint sounds like a more serious step than my landlord is likely to tolerate, I'm about to go out & buy it for the mould solely on your recommendation. So please let me know if it was just written in a moment of next-morning regret! Thanks again.
Ah yes, I was serious about the use of Soju as an anti-fungal agent. Something about it's high sugar content makes it delicious to mold, according to one of my nerdy teenager students back in the Republic of the Not Quite Right. Pour it into one of those plastic spray bottles and lightly hose down the moldy spot. Just don't put too much on, as Soju also makes a very effective paint stripper. As well keep it far, far away from any pets as they will be attracted to it's sweet taste. Oh, and make sure to get the Ajoshi Saturday Night Special Soju that comes in the green bottle. Oh,
