Protesters on Phan Dinh Phung Street
no photo available

I'm relatively new to Hanoi and I have a question about the protesters (mainly older countryside women) who sit on the corner of Phan Dinh Phung, at the edge of a park, in front of a big government building.

I'm curious why they are protesting. I tried to approach them with a Viet kieu friend of mine and we were shooed away by plainclothes police.

I'm not looking for trouble or problems with the government, just curious about what these people are protesting.

(Good on the local authorities for letting them gather there just about everyday with their signs)

Although there could be many causes for these protests, the main dispute has been farmland (or land in general) seizure by the government. You missed the sizable and very much animated demonstration over land seized from Catholics back in February. Take a stroll on Trang Thi, then turn right at the intersection with Quang Trung. A few hundreds yard on your left is this yellow cheeseblock that is the main focus of that protest.
