Lately I've found myself being attacked rather vigourously by mosquitos whilst I'm sleeping, which I'm not enjoying. I can't seem to locate the insects responsible (although I'm pretty sure they're mosquitos rather than bed bugs or fleas), and the idea of using a net makes me feel a bit claustrophobic. I heard that there's some kind of effective electronic mosquito deterrent / zapper that one can plug into a power socket - does anyone have details on this product, or know where I could buy one?
Thanks

We were getting slaughtered regularly by them too, but found the bug thing you're after. Citimart in Hanoi Towers and Big C both stock them, it is in an orange box about the size of a light globe, called Jumbo. The plug thinggy is the same orange colour, and it comes with either a small perfume bottle full of magic, that is connected underneath, or a pad that you shove into the top cover. The bottles are easier to see when they are running low so you need to buy a new one, and if you're not careful pulling them out from the wall, you can rip the top bit off the electronics (I have done it a few times now), but they won't break the bank if that happens. They are great, the bugs go away till it is empty and we scramble to buy a new one

Yes, I have been using the same product as Snellopy. You can get it from Fivimart or L's Place too. You can get mosquito coils too. :)

How can I tell if I have bed bugs (and eliminate them)? I'm already washing my sheets. I got bit yesterday even without them and had Jumbo running.

Thanks for the info. Checked out both Hanoi Towers & Vincom - sadly both were out of the electric jumbos and weren't sure if / when they'd be restocking (at least I think that's what they said). Will check out other suggested locations as soon as I work out exactly where they are (happy for any hints on this topic). Picked up the burning coil version in the meantime, however I've had one burning in my room for the last two hours and I just saw a mosquito happily flying around, so I am dubious as to how effective the coil is. Mnguyen, I checked out wikipedia to work out whether I had bed bugs or fleas in a previous location (in the end, decided it was a third type of bug that comes from trees) - type in 'bed bug' and follow the recommended links for advise on elimination (it doesn't sound easy...)
That last sentence should read "advice", not "advise" ... my English is going all pear shaped, and I've not yet worked out to edit 'answer' posts....

I know what you mean about those coil things and how they seem not to work, but I can swear by them!! A Korean gent who lived in my place before me left a bunch of Korean coils and they work like magic. I still see mosquitos flying around, but I haven't been bitten in ages. Bizarre but great!

I got my mosquito zapper at Fivimart on Tran Quang Khai and they were stocked up on them two months ago...

I got my rechargeable electronic mosquito bat (that looks like a tennis racket/badminton bat) for a marked down price of VND 39,900 at Big C last Sunday. It even has a small flashlight at the handle. You'll hear the 'zapping' sound when the mosquito is 'electrecuted' (lol).

Update: I went to Fivimart on Nguyen Chi Thanh - again, they'd sold out of the Jumbo electronic mosquito killers however I managed to buy one made by ARS. This morning I woke up with a bite on the knuckle of my right hand ... but it's only one bite and I may not have sustained it at home. Will see how it all goes. Thanks very much to everyone for their advice. And yes, letsgoeverywhere, you're right - the coils actually DID seem to work! The constant smoke was a draw back, however good to have on hand as a fallback.

Some supermarkets do still have the plug-in zappers, as well as the liquid refills. There are Raid and Jumbo versions. The Fivimart on Dang Tien Dong (near the Tay Son/Thai Ha intersection) as well as the Techsimex (I think it's called) near the Kim Lien hotel had them stocked in the past week.
Add the Hapro mart on Nguyen Trai, Thanh Xuan, to the above that have the plug-in repellent gizmos.
Aha! Finally got me a Jumbo electronic zapper! Thanks Dan's!
And now I have a RID electronic zapper as well (from Metro). I have an electronic zapper in every room and am not getting bitten by mosiquitos anymore - at least not at home. Now I just hope that mixing brands is not going to lead to some kind of horrible mid-air explosion... :D
