If you mean the books written in the old script try the shops in the old quarter. Hang Bac (around #50/51) are good The shop at Ba Trieu is closer to VinCom Tower end. On the right as you're driving down. Old books rather than antique. Also try #5 ?#9 Bat Dan. It's a shop that sells soft drinks by the case. The sign reads 'Sach Cu'. The EFEO library on #5 Ha Hoi has old books (from 1890s) but of course they aren't for sale. (Pathfinder had an article about them)

I am also interested in buying old (19th ct, or early 20th ct) books, in English, French or German – or perhaps Vietnamese if the book is really pretty to look at with decorated leather binding and a few pictures in it etc. However, I have not seen any shops that sell antique used books anywhere in Vietnam. I wonder why? Aren't the Vietnamese in to that sort of thing, or what's the deal?

I've got some books for sale here, not sure they are what you are looking for, 2 of them are about 90-100 years old. http://newhanoian.xemzi.com/listing/list?type=25/books

Hmm... Can I add in a request? I am currently doing research on late 19th-early 20th century Vietnamese history, and would appreciate addresses of any bookshops selling books on Vietnamese history...
Forgot to add: Vietnamese, Chinese and English books are all welcome
